The co-owner of the Als, Sid Spiegel, has died at age ninety. Hopefully this won't cause the team any problems.

Sid Spiegel, the silent Alouettes co-owner since January 2020, died Wednesday in Toronto having never seen his team play a game. He was believed to be 90. ...
Spiegel, along with Gary Stern, his son-in-law, purchased the Canadian Football League team in January 2020 from the league, which had assumed ownershipthe previous season from Robert and Andrew Wetenhall. ...
Spiegel was the founder and chairman of the board of Crawford Steel, a privately held company — with 17 distribution centres and one scrapyard — established in 1944. The company has investments in Quebec, including steel plants in Longueuil and Rouyn-Noranda. Spiegel didn’t attend the team’s inaugural news conference announcing the sale, but was represented by Stern, the steel company’s CEO and Als’ governor, who has served as the ownership’s spokesman. CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie also was in attendance. ...

In a series of text messages with the Montreal Gazette, Mario Cecchini, the Als’ president, said he has been in touch with Stern. Cecchini said it wasn’t his place to discuss ownership, but noted he wasn’t concerned moving forward, despite the franchise losing an important financial component.
Former Argo WR Alex Charente from 2017 to 2019 has just returned to the Als where he played in 2015-16, where he had his best season in 2015 with 24 catches for 208 yards.
William Stanback is happy to be back with the Als after going to the NFL in 2020.
https://montrealgazette.com/sports/f...-the-alouettesQuote:
When he signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in January 2020, running-back William Stanback thought he had seen the last of the Alouettes and the Canadian Football League.
With a $100,000 signing bonus from the Raiders, Stanback had reason to believe the NFL was in his immediate future. However, Las Vegas released him during training camp and he re-signed with the Als last December.
“There always was the thought in the back of my mind, if I was going back to the CFL, Montreal was where I’m going,” he said. “Things worked out (in the NFL) the way they did. Things happened the way they did. I can’t go back and change anything. I just have to deal with it. But when things happened, I felt this team, this organization, this city were the first people I should call. I’m playing somewhere that I’m appreciated, somewhere that I’m actually wanted. That’s what fulfils my heart. Montreal was the first team to give me an opportunity to play professional.” ...
Stanback remains the bruising, physical and punishing runner who thrived with the Als in 2019. In Montreal’s season-opening victory at Edmonton on Saturday, the 6-foot-3, 233-pounder gained 112 yards on 18 carries, including one run of 20 yards. He would have contributed more to the Als’ offence, but dropped two passes. ...
Stanback is faster than he appears, given his size. But what remains his most telling attribute is the manner in which he bounces off tacklers and is difficult to stop. “It’s my size,” he explained. “And I’ve got some speed to me. I just try to have the mentality to keep moving forward. Even at that, there were a few things I messed up on, like catching my screens. I simply took my eyes off the ball and tried to look upfield before I had possession. It’s not because I can’t catch.”
Vernon Adams comment about the Ottawa game suggests that he had some doubts about his performance in previous games that was reflected in his first couple of wobbly passes until he hit on a long bomb. But as he notes his teammates picked him up.

Vernon Adams Jr
“We had great practices throughout the entire week. My teammates did not give up on me. They knew I had lost some confidence, but they still had faith in me. They told me to be myself, to move the ball downfield… that I didn’t need to be perfect and they’d be there for me. I really appreciated that.”
Former Alouette owner Bob Wettenhall, who owned the Als from 1997 to 2019 and brought back the club to glory after a long famine, has died. He had also owned the Boston Patriots in the old American Football League in the 1960s.
HC Khari Jones has tested positive for Covid and is in isolation, but is asymptomatic. No other players or staff have tested positive. Assistant HC and RB coach Andre Bolduc will be in charge against BC.
Vernon Adams has had and up and down year so far, sometimes looking very good and sometimes way off the mark, including last week when he went 16/36 with 2 interceptions and no TDs against BC.
Former Argo Mario Alford is second in punt return (268 yards) and fourth in kick return (320 yards) yardage for third overall in the CFL.
The Als have signed QB Shea Patterson who was cut by BC this month. They released QB Nick Tiano.

Patterson, 24, played his college football at Ole Miss (2016 and 2017) and Michigan (2018 and 2019). Patterson threw for 8,800 yards in his college career, with 68 touchdowns to 27 interceptions. He spent a couple of months with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, before going to The Spring League. He signed with the BC Lions in June of this year but was released from their practice roster earlier this month. Patterson will undergo COVID protocols this week before joining the team on the field.
Vernon Adams return from a first quarter foot injury late in the game sparked a come-from-behind badly needed 23-20 victory in overtime to beat Hamilton and climb out a cellar tie with Ottawa. If he can reduce his tendency to throw interceptions, his athletic ability could make him one of the top CFL QBs.
Canadian LB Frederic Plesius has signed with the Als. He had been on the suspended list until he finished his quarantine. He has bounced around the CFL with Hamilton, Winnipeg and the Als since 2012 with 29 DT and 74 ST tackles.
HC Khari Jones on where the Als are at the midpoint of the season:
https://montrealgazette.com/sports/f...inside-the-cflQuote:
“I still think we’re figuring it out, our identity,” he said Friday. “You hope you find it a little earlier. This is an interesting season for that. You’re trying to make sure you have all the pieces in place in the right way. I feel like we’re getting there. We’ll see as we go along.”
Vernon Adams will be going on the 6-game as a result of his injury suffered yesterday against Ottawa.
The Als currently stand second in the east, it'll be interesting to see Shiltz get a shot. He's been in the league for awhile now.
Shiltz has looked good in relief both yesterday and in Hamilton. Former Michigan QB Shea Patterson will be elevated to back-up in Adams absence. Would not be overly surprised to see them go after Jonathan Jennings for insurance. Played his best in BC when Khari was his position coach.
The Als have released DB Dondre Wright who had been with them in 2017-18 and the Bombers in 2019 but had seen no game action this year with the Als. They also signed Austin Simmons as additional QB insurance. He had 6,000+ yards in two years with the University South Dakota after transferring there from Davenport University.
Former2017-18 Argo and 2018-19 Elk KR/RB Martese Jackson has signed with Montreal, as well as two others.
https://3downnation.com/2021/10/25/m...on-two-others/Quote:
The 29-year-old out of Florida Atlantic University is a four-year CFL veteran that came into the league in 2017 and spent two seasons with the Toronto Argonauts, before two with the Edmonton Elks. The five-foot-five, 171-pound Jackson has made his name as a returner. In 39 career games he has 163 punt returns for 1,776 yards and a pair of touchdowns and 128 kick-off returns for 2,553 yards. He has 26 carries for 128 yards with one touchdown and 31 catches for 241 yards and a touchdown.
With Als’ returner Mario Alford on the six-game injured list, Jackson could be the replacement for Montreal’s speedster.
The Alouettes also signed national offensive lineman Kwabena Asare and American linebacker Reshard Cliett. All three will sit on the suspended list while they wait to clear COVID protocols.
National long snapper Zach Greenberg, along with defensive back Jermaine Pounder, receiver Rashad Ross and quarterback Austin Simmons, all three Americans, were released.
Former Argo Trevor Harris will be starting at QB for the Als against Winnipeg after Shiltz went only 7/13 for 106 yards against the Riders and was replaced by Harris, who went 12/15 for 123 yards, in the third quarter.
