    Professional Wrestling,

If you are a fan, what was /is your favorite era?

    60's 70's?

    AWA/NWA/WWF

    the 1990's

    or more current?

I loved buying the wrestling magazines, Rick Flair NWA Champ, Ric Martel AWA Champ, and Hogan, newly crowned WWF Champ.

Rowdy Roddy Piper has always been my favorite wrestler.

Loved going to the CNE, a massive outdoor event prior to any wrestlemania, Angelo KING KONG Mosca. (Maple Leaf Wrestling) ? Billy Red Lions ?

I still watch, but after the Bret Hart/ Steve Austin era its been tougher to be a hardcore fan.

We do attend the indy shows every few months still

Not sure what you got up your ass but I was just pointing out that there was already a wrestling thread, nothing more. You might want to look at the thread. And despite your dickweed response I'll tell ya the best wrestling ever because I have seen them all, Crockett mid 80s

    Nice Tricky Dick sig BTW

OK, so revive a dead thread, or start anew.

Ok, so my "dickweed" answer is simply this.

I remember Sadistic Steve Strong, smashing a stubby bottle of Labatt 50 off of his forehead,

That said if you know anything about the story of Roderick Toombs, then cartoon would not have been a part of your retort.

At least you enjoy wrestling as do I

I was four feet away, floor directing, when Ron Starr did the same thing. The aforementioned Mr Toombs and Rick Martel both did the same and they learned it in Hawaii from Maritime legend The Beast.

Fascinating, you sure know how to use the google machine, kudos to you.

So, does all this banter mean your favorite era was late 70's ?, early 80's? , as the thread asked?

    Because that's my favorite era.

(btw, a stubby would have hurt way more than a , long neck)

Footnote, NEVER was a fan of Abdulla the Butcher

I don't know how to use the google machine, I know these things happened, I know my pro wrestling and its history. I was close to the biz in my own small way. As I said, Crockett mid 80s, nothing better. If Magnum TA hadn't have had a career ending car crash and David Von Erich died prematurely the WWF as you know it might never have got off the ground.

Well, if ok is a euphemism for the most talented and popular up and coming babyface in the business who along with DVE was being groomed for the title, with VKM also considering him to head his national push, yeah I guess he was ok.

Loved going to wrestling at the Gardens between 1978-84 when Tunney promoted stars of the Mid Atlantic region. Great matches all night long. Then his nephew got into bed with Vince. All sizzle no steak. 8 minute matches with 20 minutes of posing.

After that, it was hard to get good wrestling up here. We had AWA on TSN which was good until Verne Gagne lost his marbles. International wrestling in Montreal was awesome, but didn't last long on the stations in this area. Stampede was good until Vince killed it. Brian Pillman, Chris Benoit, Owen Hart, Bad News Allen...all before they left for WCW or WWE. And for those that remember FNN/Score, they had some great wrestling from Hawaii with the likes of Kevin Sullivan, Mark Lewin, Jerry Lawlor (and not the comedian from WWE, but a super vicious heel) and a lot of different stars.

I remember watching over the TV station satellite (while working) Bill Watt's UWF (not the Herb Abrams UWF) This was his attempt at going national, a step up from his Mid-South territory. I recall it being very good and somewhat different as most matches were high profile and not squashes. That may have been booker Bill Dundee's hand as he was known as a hotshotter.

Great territory with Dr Death Steve Williams, Terry Taylor, Eddie Gilbert just to name a few. They ended up merging with Mid-Atlantic and Georgia if i’m Not mistaken to make what became WCW as a viable challenger to the Vince monopoly

Very nice man. I worked a couple of shows for him in the mid 90’s when he was using wrestling to help promote his karaoke business. Still does the karaoke thing at a country bar on Queen St east on Saturdays. Been invited there a few times, but never made it out.

As I recall, he used to come to the TV station early to stake his claim to the lighting room as only one person could fit comfortably in there. Lights were kept off until broadcast time to keep the heat low, and then I'd go in flick them on and have a quick conversation with the Sweet Man.

One of my favourite territories was Sandor Kovac's All Star in Vancouver which was shown across the CTV Network. It was so bad it was good. My brother used to call it "Gramps Wrestling" because most of the wrestlers looked about 70 years old (I suppose everybody does when you're a kid). Old timer Ron Morrier hosted the show and his hilarious "interviews" with Canada's Greatest Athlete Gene Kiniski were always a highlight. I don't know why but I developed a real affection for perennial curtain raiser Jack Bence, he looked about one hundred, never won, but I liked him.

Edit: Actually not a bad crew here:

Aug 24, 1970 - Kovacs; Kerrisdale Arena; Vancouver

John Quinn & Bob Brown b. Don Leo Jonathan & Duncan McTavish ... Gene Kiniski b. Dean Higuchi ... Chatti Yokouchi & Yasu Fuji b. Vince Torres & Juan Marino ... Pierre LeGrande b. Eric Froelich ... Jack Bence d.w. Ken Ackles
