Abrams should be satisfied with inventing Star Trek

Abrams did not invent Star Trek.

leave the Star Wars franchise to someone with a different vision.

The news is now official and I presonally fell he is better suited to direct Star Wars than Star Trek. Hopefully now we can get some better Star Trek, though Abrams may still direct the potential third Star Trek film.

I'm just getting standard admission for the Q&A. None of the deluxe photo op or meet and greet and autographs for me. I will have money for the convention portion, and yes it is my first time.

I wish they would tell you what time it starts, all it says is evening. The TFC home opener is the same day and it looks like the game will be at 1:30pm. It is $49 for the general admission to the TNG Q&A plus the minimum $25 dollars for the Saturday show pass. Ticket info here.

I suppose that is true. But I did manage to nonchalantly stroll into a convention, around 1995 or so....


I was driving down the 427 on a Sunday afternoon, after visiting a friend for the weekend, on his farm north of T.O. Well, he wasn't a farmer - just rented a house surrounded by farmland; the perfect cover for a weekend of drinking, music, and feasting, in the finest Klingon tradition. Anyway, I decided to top up the fuel in my car, so I got off the highway at Dixon Rd. And while heading back to the highway, I noticed a Star Trek Convention sign, on some hotel. Deciding "oh what the hell, let's see what the fuss is all about", I pulled into the lot, and walked into the door of the hotel. I was curious about what it would cost to get in, but I wasn't going to pay more than twenty bucks. Having two cans of beer left (pardon the term) in my cooler (more at home of course), I cracked one and proceeded to follow the signs.

There was eventually a wide hallway, with about five fold-up desks, unfolded, on my port side, with people lined up in front of them. No doubt these were trekkies, registering. Now, since I am not a trekkie (I've gotten laid at least twice, in my life), I figured this registration process did not apply to me (and it didn't). So, beer in one hand, wearing flip-flop beach sandals, shorts and a t-shirt, I casually walked past the tables, and into the main hall.

It was kinda cool; exhibits, people with funny faces, freaky merchandise being sold. Some real alien types (for a moment I wondered if I was at a Liberal or NDP convention). Anyway, no big deal. But it was fun. No doubt no one dared question me, due perhaps, to my foreboding Klingon demeanour. Even though I was wearing shorts (I would have told them that I was a hotel guest, just wandering around - and if that didn't work, I would have cut them to little pieces).

No harm done.


Now, to explain something I wrote above:

If, you've gotten laid at least twice, in your life, then you are not, a trekkie.

See, even a trekkie can somehow, possibly, maybe, perhaps get laid once; but after that, everyone hears about it, and that, is the end of that.

I admit I was trolling there. My intention was to spend a post or two faux-arguing that pre-Abrams Trek was either a dress rehearsal or so ancestral as to be irrelevant, but my heart just isn't in it! I'm not a fan of the reboot and am quite familiar with the franchise.

I e-mailed them and they confirmed 7:00pm-8:30pm and the TFC home opener is now confirmed for a 1:30pm start so I have my tickets for both events, looking forward to it. Unrelated but Star Trek related, I thought this was funny:

If I were to re-do the episode 'City on the edge of forever', I'd have McCoy sent to 2011 and he'd somehow convince Tillman not to trade Ricky Ray, then the world would have most surely ended and Kirk and Spock have to prevent Bones from doing it.

Spock: 'I'm sorry Jim. I know you're an esks fan with your green and yellow shirts but Ricky Ray MUST be traded'.

I have no problems with an action movie. I personally think Gene Roddenberry's vision where everything is "Kumbaya" is utterly ridiculous. The Wrath of Khan was the best Trek movie and it contained a ton of action. But, what made that good film is that it had a good story to back-up the action. The question is whether Into Darkness will contain a similar element. The trailers do not seem to bare that out, but then again the trailers rarely tell the whole truth.
