    Esks release Bauman, Kabongo

    Edmonton Eskimos
    ESKS.com Staff

(Edmonton) Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman announced today the club has released non-import offensive lineman Patrick Kabongo, non-import receiver Chris Bauman and import defensive back Wopamo Osaisai.

Kabongo is an eight-year veteran, who played at the University of Nebraska. A native of Montreal, he joined the Eskimos in August of 2004 via a trade with Ottawa. Kabongo has been a multi-year All-Star and a two-time David Boone Memorial Award recipient for his outstanding work in the community.

Bauman, a product of the Regina Rams, was the first overall selection in the 2007 draft. He spent four years with the Hamilton Ticats before signing with the Esks as a free agent in February of 2011. The 6-4, 220 pound receiver has 125 career catches for 1643 yards.

Osaisai, a Stanford graduate, played in six games as a cornerback in 2011. He spent time with the San Diego Chargers before coming to the CFL.

"We would like to thank all three men for their contributions to our club, especially, of course, Patrick who has earned substantial respect in our community and organization," said Tillman. "This can be a tough business, and in a salary cap era, many factors have to be taken into consideration when making decisions - age, salary and performance. That said, it's quite possible at least one of these men will be returning to our club in 2012."

for the level of production they got from Kabongo and Bauman... and figuring the likely size of their contracts, this really doesn't come as a big surprise.

    anyone for a reclamation project?

Kabongo doesn't interest me, but for a cheap salary (like say $60k) I would give Bauman one last shot to resurrect a once-promising career.

I was also thinking along the same lines as you Paul, although I am interested to see if Bradwell can produce if given more of an opportunity. He flashed potential last season.

if the price was right, i'd give either a shot to make the team. speed and strength can be trained, skill and technique can be taught... but as far as i know, there's no way to train or teach a guy to have a canadian passport.

    beat me to it @backer@oldclarke

It didn't take long for Chris Bauman to find a new home.

Less than a week after being cut by the Edmonton Eskimos, the CFL's No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft has come to terms on a two-year deal with the Calgary Stampeders, Sportsnet.ca has learned.

The contract, which includes a team option, does include a signing bonus, but is about a 30% pay cut from the approximate 2012 cap hit of $115,000 had he been retained by Edmonton.

That's about $80,000 if my math is right. I'm glad the Argos passed.
