As per Drew Edwards at the Scratching Post:
http://scratchingpost.thespec.com/Kent Austin is coming to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
The former Saskatchewan Roughrider coach is returning to the CFL after a five-year absence to become head coach and general manager of the Ticats. Austin, who had a ten-year career as a CFL quarterback and coached the Riders to the 2007 Grey Cup, resigned from his position as head coach of Cornell University this morning and is expected to be introduced at a news conference in Hamilton later today.
The move comes less than a week after the team fired head coach George Cortez and announced that general manager Bob O'Billovich would likely move into a consulting role with the club. Cortez went 6-12 in his first season at the helm and the team missed the playoffs.
The Ticats reportedly pursued Austin at this time last year after firing coach Marcel Bellefeuille but the 49-year-old elected to stay at Cornell. He has an 11-19 record in three years with the Big Red.
Nobody can deny that his one season as a Head Coach in the CFL was a roaring success (Grey Cup, making Joseph an MOP)... but for me, i was never impressed by him and attributed the 07 Riders title run more to their personnel than their HC. Flutie knows that he was an utter bust as an OC here...
Can Austin give Hamilton its first above .500 team since 2001? Will they give him more than a year to prove himself (especially if the going gets rough)? Is there enough off-season left to bring in a cast of good complementary coaches and coordinators for Kent, re-sign free agents, pursue other team's FAs and to do proper scouting?
To me, those are the questions.
