Some will see that figure and think that's low for a highest paid athlete in a pro league. Meanwhile, they make 1/10th or less of that and would kill for that kind of money.

    Congrats, Travis.

Well done Travis. Now the Lions will have to compress in some other areas making them a tad more vulnerable.

Shouldn't be too difficult. It can be argued that they looked better with Simon and Bruce out of the line-up in 2012. Releasing either or both of them, should take care of that.

I think the cap goes up $50,000 this year, so that gives teams a bit more flexibility.

Lulay remains an important piece in the Lions puzzle so Wally didn't have much choice to splurge. I agree he will work out the kinks.

Agreed. Simon was probably the most overpaid player in the league last year, and by a lot, too. If he makes anything north of $85K this year it will be too much. He should probably retire.

looks like Reilly leaving BC will be part of the fallout from this...

    CFL.ca Staff
VANCOUVER -- In the wake of inking franchise pivot Travis Lulay to a contract through 2015, the Lions may be forced to surrender backup Mike Reilly to free agency in February.

Reilly, who proved to be very capable filling in for an injured Lulay in 2012 both as a starter and off the bench, played out his option year and Lions general manager Wally Buono stated that he expects the 27-year-old to pursue free-agent options.

"I knew that if (the club re-signed Lulay), then (Reilly) would probably have a harder look at free agency,'' said Buono at the press conference to announce Lulay’s extension. "For Mike's sake, if I was his agent, I would probably recommend that.

“If you're honest, Mike wants to be in a position where he's going to be given a chance to start.''

Reilly has made it known he wants to be a CFL starter, and Buono expects he will garner attention from other CFL clubs.

The Edmonton Eskimos and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, among others, have needs at quarterback, and Reilly worked out for the Jacksonville Jaguars this winter.

Reilly completed 52 of 57 passes for 682 yards and 4 touchdown passes while rushing for 122 yards and two majors on 34 carries in 2012.

i figure that Reilly is soon to be an Eskie...

I thought I'd bump this thread.

There are some on Lionbackers who are calling for Lulay to be benched.

He has definitely struggled this year. I think it's a little early though to call for his benching.

I think that many Lions fans are panicked because of how well Saskatchewan and Calgary are playing and they are not confident that the Lions can win in BOTH Calgary and Regina in the playoffs.

They should probably relax since it's week 9. There's a long way to go. The Riders are 2 plays away from being 5-3 and Calgary is down to its 3rd string quarterback. Considering BC is two years removed from a 1-6 start and then went on to win the Grey Cup, they should know that better than anyone.

If I was a Rider fan, I might be concerned we peaked in July.
