Just curious OV, do you think they won't be available by the time the Argos are up or will the Argos just go in another direction?

I'll bet both will be taken by the time the Argos get their 2nd pick at #15.

Coombs might be a nice pick as a future slotback prospect to be a Durie type, but IMO he won't get a real shot to play tailback for the Argos; rather see them go elsewhere even if Coombs is still available at #15 (like a DE - Ainsworth (likely gone by then too) or Menard perhaps); or a safety/DB/OLB type (Pruneau or Lue - both maybe gone by then too though); 2 potential impact players for the D would be great for the 1st 2 picks, but Coombs would still be nice at #15. IMO - Coombs makes sense as a top 10 or so pick IF he is going to get a real shot to play his natural position at tailback; and sure he might be able to make the transition to a CFL slotback like Durie did - but that is easier said than done to be able to show the hands, route running and other receiver finesse skills; IMO again - "project" type picks make sense only in the mid to later rounds; if a team is serious about a receiver - there are better choices than Coombs this draft.

Quinn Smith's substance violation will add an element of mystery to the first round. He'll almost certainly be available at #6 if we wanted to take a chance (I vote no).

I would prefer to see the Argos stay clear of Smith given this news but the Argos have a history of being a "second chance" team so I would not be surprised to see them draft Smith. However, I get the feeling that this drug had a lot to do with his performance at the Combine and if he can't continue using it, just how good will he be?

The Argos should stay away from drafting him, combine results totally related to using the juice.

He was still considered one of the top players in the CIS or he wouldn't have been invited to the combine to begin with. Usually those linemen are tested at some point during the season but maybe he missed it somehow.
I don't have a problem drafting him in the third round or so. He isn't going back to the CIS just to sit out for 2 years so he is committed to the team.

I would draft Smith at #6 in a heart beat. The substance he took was over the counter, not some drug that is so you get caught with on the street you would get arrested. I really wonder how much of an impact it had on his Combine performance anyway.

Stanozolal is the same anabolic steroid that Ben Johnson got banned for in Seoul, veterinarians commonly use this in horse racing. I'm sure this "over the counter" substance didn't help his combine results.

Every athlete that is caught seems to say something along the lines of what Smith has said.

I have seen a couple different Mock Drafts now, both seem to hint the Argos selecting a Receiver by the name of Kris Bastien, who has good size. If selected, along with the signing of recent draftee Nadjei (sp) out of U of Buffalo, could this mean that reliable incumbent Mike Bradwell could be on the bubble?

I wouldn't think so. Bradwell is also very good on special teams. Rookie receivers will be brought in slowly, and you will likely see them on some sort of injured list, or PR....unless they really show significant upgrades over what they currently have in terms of vets.

I notice that a top prospect in last years draft, Oregon LB Bo Lokombo who was drafted 21st overall by B.C. last year, went undrafted in the NFL's yearly draft of college players...if he does not get signed as a FA that could be a big coup for the Lions.

Penalty info through week three, Mace interview

I always feel that penalties are under-reported in the CFL and so I thought I should do my part to help fill the void. I've written up a blog on the penalties after week three and have put some penalties on our stats page.

    Check it out here:

We also interviewed Corey Mace yesterday. If you are a CFL junkie and want to get all you can, especially on a bye week...

Enjoyed your Mace Interview! Shame Eric didn't get those 2 pick sixes! (Although it looked like he didn't play too much of the game). I'll talk to him tonight.

What would be interesting would be a breakdown of penalties into violent (unnecessary roughing, roughing the passer, etc.) and non-violent (offsides, etc.). For example, are the leaders in penalties there because they are going offside in rushing the passer or trying to get an early departure on a route or because they more prone to making late hits etc.
