Foley - Is he back? (from 2013)

Appears Foley was looking at the NFL as an option to close out his career?

From his Twitter account: "Letting go of lifelong goals is never easy... Struggling to say goodbye to the Dream after being so close... #NFL"

Interesting and sad it didn't work out for him. Hope he decides to stay here with us after this set back.

He is a little old for the NFL now. I can't see that league being interested in a 30 year-old defensive end/linebacker who has never played there before no matter how good he may be.

agreed - he may or may not be back with the Boatmen but no chance he goes for the NFL attempt at this stage of his life/career.

I think his best before date has passed as the last year was unimpressive.
I would not sign him back.

    disagree.

coach Jones obviously favours athletic DEs who can cover space and pursue as well as the usual job requisites of plugging holes, containing the outside of the LOS and pressuring QBs. Foley started off on the wrong foot but when he finally committed to Jones' system he was very effective in our run-in to the playoffs and GC. why would we want to so casually cast away a guy who (in addition to being a hometown boy) was coming into his at seasons' end to the point that he was the MOC in the GC?

having said all that... Foley by this point has likely seen that other teams (and leagues) aren't beating a path to his door as they were a couple of years back after he tried out with the Seahawks and Jets after having been the CFL's 2009 MOC... so i would guess that he may have to take a haircut on his salary.

I think that you may have hit the nail on the head here. It seems that every year in free agency that the major players and the ones who will get the biggest raises are signed within the first few days of the free agent period. We are now almost a week in and Foley may be the last of the major players left. As teams have already committed much of their cap money for 2013, the market for Foley's services is closing. With each day that he goes unsigned, the greater is the chance that he will have to take a pay cut and the greater is the chance that he winds up back in Toronto.

But what about his stipulation that he is used as a pass rusher only or whatever it was exactly. Obviously in Chris Jones' scheme he is asked to do more than that. I doubt he goes anywhere else but Toronto but I can't see Jones or Milanovich being too interested in players dictating when and how they are used.

??? Do you know something about his past contract that nobody else knows? I can't see any team in any league allowing for such a selfish stipulation.

You just need to ask his brother. It was pretty clear that's what he wanted.

Wherever Ricky Foley winds up, Area 51 will be on that team's fan forum unless Foley ends up back with the Argos. A lot is at stake with this move.

heavens no, I know far less than the majority of this forum!

I had read / heard (can't recall the source) that Foley was open to coming back to the Argos with a pay cut but only if he was used only as a pass rusher. Agreed 100% such a comment is selfish but given Ricky's comments earlier in the season when he was doing things besides rushing the passer - it is possible.

Ahh...thanks for clarifying. I thought it was an odd comment. My stance on Foley changed late in the year. I truly believe he finally bought in and realized that team accomplishments are far greater than individual. I've never seen anyone as emotional as he was when they won the championship. I hope he's back.

I hope to see him back and the passion he played with late in the season once he found his role was amazing.

Ya Ricky's gotta stay, it seemed like he got a little more better known around town during Cup week, media outlets were looking for him a bit since he's such a colourful guy. I'm sure the whole Cup thing has opened up a couple of doors for him around town in the last couple months. He would lose all that if he went to another town, he's gotta know that. Take the pay shave and build his brand here in TO. If he thinks one Cup was such a blast, how about 2 or 3 in a row? Why not, with this team? And now he's got Yurichuk to add to the TO homies on the team. C'mon Ricky!

Sorry for the delayed response - - for some unknown reason I haven't been able to log in here for the past several days.
