Valued at $568 million after bought for $137 million in 2000. I think the Blue Jays are doing fine.

Also, as usual, argolio is right. Revenue sharing has made owning a MLB team the past 6-7 years basically a no-lose situation.

Yeah, Rogers make a profit, they have a number of business entities under there line of business, most make money, the Jays ,do not, and with the CRCT, Rogers will be making money for some time, so what. We are talking about the Jays making money.or lack thereof

That same Forbes story you posted about the Jays value going up. Also states that the Jays are 1 out of 4 teams that lost money last year in the league

I think that they should be renamed the Rogers Blue Jays.

Even with the increase in attendance it will not come close to the jump in the salaries.
Then if the team continues to play poorly which they hopefully will, the fans will likely bail and hence the increase losses.
They probably have to make the playoffs to be something close to profitable this year.

While the Jays very likely did lose $300M+ in the first decade (2001-10) they owned the team, it's not as if the Argos had a license to print money. We had multiple owners (including the league) over that period for a reason. Hopefully the new TV contract will allow the Argos to at least break even every year, but it's not easy making money on pro sports in Toronto if you're not the Leafs, so let's stop living in glass houses.

A $570 million entity had a roughly $5 million yearly loss while the franchise went up in value. Not exactly time to panic.

Considering the Argos haven't been profitable since ????? I really don't get all the joy in the the non-money troubles of the Blue Jays.

I suspect why people are so upset about how much money the Jays are losing is that the media rarely makes mention of it while they constantly harp on how much money the Argos lose.

I can't recall there being as many Argo "financial woe" stories lately, but as you've noted the bigger issue now is how Sportsnet covers the CFL and the Jays compared to TSN. It's hard to argue that TSN isn't far more, as Fox News would say, fair and balanced.

I thought with this new TV deal even the Argos were expected to turn at least a small profit this year. In a non-Grey Cup year this would be unheard of.

Funny how Brad Fay and Jamie Campbell are big CFL supporters. I've known Brad since 1990 when I met him in Vancouver at Grey Cup. He's a huge BC Lion fan having grown up in BC. Jamis Campbell has been to plenty of Grey Cups and now brings Gregg Zaun every year. He has a party now. Sports Net Pacific carries plenty of CFL news. It's the strange TO market where it's kill or be killed with all of the sports teams.
I've said it for years that TO is the strangest sports town where all the sports fans of the city are divided. In most other cities fans hope the best for each team in that city. Media doesn't help that's for sure.

Big difference. They harped on it because every season it looked like the Argos could go under or who knows if an owner would bail. If there ever comes a season where that becomes a threat to the Jays ... the media won't shut up about it.

Also the harping on Argos (and CFL losses) began in the late 90's when the whole shebang almost did blow up. So there is a precedent. But as was also mentioned in this thread ... we haven't heard any harping lately since Braley came in full view in this city.

You're 100% correct. IMO the media helped create it in the last 20 years.

Lots media attention, mostly US, about drunken bonheads on the .500 level at Jays games. So where is the gestapo tactics that shut down "noisy" Argo fans ?

One of the reasons given for the decline of Argo attendance back in the 1980s, as I recall at the time, was drunken and boorish behaviour by fans. The Jays, at that time, were seen to be more family-friendly. Perhaps the reverse is true some 30 years later. In any event, the Jays will need to change the perception and some of the actual behaviour that is going on at their games.

Well I guess Argo fans can handle their booze. The Argoholics were always taking CRAP from the Sky Nazi's back in the day and none of us were puking or running onto the field all hammered. We drank but we had fun.

Talk about a double standard. More reason to have a hate on for Rogers and their NSS, Nazi Security Squad.
