“But we should have done the York deal"

Interesting article in the Star with Sokolowski on the stadium merry-go-round debate.

all I can say to this headline is "yeah, no shit". Being there last night was a bittersweet, that's where we should be.

the NIMBYs there didn't want increased crowds, rowdieness and even more cars down there. I can tell you, the bars on Prince Arthur St. certainly would have liked it! And their attitude is strange considering most of the buildings in the very immediate areas around the stadium are not houses but Uof T or office buildings. Nobodies grass was gonna get walked on! Most people I saw walked or used TTC and were coming from Bedford Av. exit from St. George. Go figure!

Yeah I figured that the Annex neighbourhood was a little north of Bloor and not directly by the stadium. Same attitude as the Glebe folks, but I say what do you expect when you choose to live on the fringes of downtown. Go live in the suburbs if you want peace and quiet.

The opposition to this really was and still is perplexing. Varsity would have been absolutely perfect for the Argos and it is a shame that it did not happen.

I don't get it, it's only 9 games a year plus one preseason and one possible playoff date so it's a maximum of 11 games a year. Plus some games could be on weekend afternoon so the "noise factor" shouldn't be a problem. Local businesses would thrive, especially the Shoppers across a street lol. Only down side is no parking.

They were also worried about concerts but how many of those in any given year would there have been?

There is plenty of competition for concerts at Varsity from the Molson Amphitheatre. All I say is this: you chose to live in a neighbourhood that is on the fringes of downtown (albeit not directly inside it), you have also picked a neighbourhood that is right next door to one of the MAJOR universities in Canada. If noise is something you did not want then you are an idiot for picking that area.

I saw a Rush concert there when I was in highschool and it was out of frigging control. We were all waiting in line getting hammered and just tossing empty cans. I mean everyone was high and trashed. Then the sod got trashed as it was being ripped up and tossed in sod fights during the concert. I have horrible bad memories as this was going on my left side started to kill me. I had this off and on for years. Ended up it was a kidney that never fuctioned properly. That night it killed so I left.Had my kidney out in 85 right out of college. After That night I had heard that there would never be another concert at Varsity. So folks who live around there could have a concern or two. Those were in the days when plenty was let go by police and I don't reacall much security.

I agree that parking was/is the only legitimate concern but with condos that have gone in and are going in that could be corrected with a deal.

you know with lots of green p and private lots in a 2km radius with ready access to subways from there, parking is certainly not an issue.

if you're coming from extremes, go train from far points or drive to kipling and vic park or warden and york mills and hop on TTC. Come on people.

Chris Rudge was on the halftime show on TSN 1050, and he spoke of a new stadium. Very early stages, to paraphrase him, but he mentioned that Braley was on board, so maybe that's a positive. Doug Ford was on during the 3rd quarter, and he was also optimistic about a new stadium, but I'm not sure how much political clout he or his mayor bro holds at this time for that sort of thing. But at least some wheels are turning.

Really? The same guy that along with his brother lobbied hard to get an NFL team in Toronto? How is that being on the Argos side? He's a typical politician, he'll lie, cheat and steal to get peoples support.

I wonder if the Fords have given up on their NFL dream. Do they finally realize that chances of that happening are slim and none?

    By now, almost none.

Between Ottawa, Queen's Park and Toronto, it's anyone's guess who might contribute (and what amount) to a new stadium project. One thing for sure is it wouldn't be an easy sell.

It probably disappeared when the NFL said no to a face-to-face meeting in early 2011. And it certainly died when that huge ferris-wheel + stadium project proposed by the Fords for the Portlands was rejected by Council.

Sorry V but that's a tad naive. Someone can want an NFL team and still be supportive of the Argos and a smaller stadium for them. Ford has proven to be a supporter of minor football and has been photographed wearing an Argo shirt on his free time.
