    The phenomena of CFL haters.

I wanted your opinion on the following thoughts that I had. I have no evidence either way, but wanted to survey the membership here to see what they think.

    (i) Roger Goodell or at least the NFL front office holds the CFL in better esteem than the CFL-haters within Canada probably recognize.

(ii) The lack of attendance at Argo games doesn't help the pro-NFL cabal's quest for an NFL team in Toronto.

Agreed. I don't think TO is an NFL city anyways.

That would be noticed, but the bigger impact is the lack of enthusiasm for the Bills series. That speaks volumes in NFL HQ about Toronto's lack of NFL interest.

Torontonians overall DO NOT KNOW FOOTBALL!!!. Live in the states and you will see the difference. The Argonuts on this forum are the exception of course. you guys will hold your own with anyone.

Also Gabe you have to wonder what the new franchise fee would be as well as the cost of the new stadium, the Bills series has proven that even Toronto has a certain threshold when it comes to ticket prices!

As much as I love the CFL, I'm not about to say that the NFL would not garner huge crowds. It would as this city is full of bandwagon jumpers who like to be seen, even if it means being bored at an average American Football game and paying Blue Jay prices to do that....there's the rub...Blue Jay prices, which are less than the top tier of NFL cities in pricing. The Bills series stupidly went with NY Giant prices which I believe are the most expenses at over $100 for the cheapest seats after Ticketmaster fees. Had they used Buffalo pricing in Orchard Park, they may have been more respectable with sales, but as is typical Rogers stupidly overpaid and made it seem like they were doing us a favour by outpricing this football market. (any sports economist could tell you that only the NHL could come close to charging those ticket prices in this market, as they were even more expensive than Leaf tickets on average)

Another reason is that Toronto NFL only fans tend to be fans of the team that they are cheering and not necessarily NFL fans. Example...Dallas Cowboy fans, who wear their swag when the team is winning, but disappear like maggots in the winter when there team can't make the playoffs. (apologies to cowboy fans on here)..lol

Fact is, pro sports, especially the NFL is about the corporate suites and you could bet that corporations would be lining up to have the exposure on American network TV during an NFL telecast. I wish this were not the case, but it predictably is.

Talked to a guy the other day at a family function who was wearing a Packers shirt....we chatted a bit then he asked who my team was....when I replied the Argos, he rolled his eyes and asked me again....I let it go from there. There are football fans and then there are NFL fans only.

But, does that definition also apply to the "CFL fans only" as well?

I guess it does, but I can relay more similar stories where NFL fans feel that CFL player are not talented because they only have to have 1 foot in bounds after making a reception (NCAA as well). I was just trying to stay on topic.

when I went to the Flutie bowl in january 2012 wearing an argonauts sweatshirt i was only asked by one media person about it. the event was near boston the day after the Pats clinched the NFC title. Obviously I was a bit of an oddball at the event for wearing it.

    What a dbag.

You may have seen this on another thread, but when I was in Budapest a couple of weeks ago, I met some guys in the hostel I was at from Calgary. I chatted with them about the CFL and they were pretty shocked I knew anything about it.

This is probably true. Like I said in another thread though I don't believe the ratio of "CFL Haters" is as high as people think. There are probably way more people out there that are just indiffrent and don't care either way.

I have to agree with Ron on this one and say it's proably not a factor in the equation.

I think it goes both ways.

Responding unkind to those types of people is not going to get them to like the CFL anymore than they already do. It's better to take the civil approach and explain to them why you enjoy the CFL and perhaps you will get through to some of them. If not at least you won't leave them with the impression of another insecure CFL fan. Much of the complaining that goes on about other people's perceptions of the CFL comes off to those people as inferiority complex. Not everyone is going to like the same things and being defensive all the time about the CFL is not the best approach when speaking to those types of people.

That's pretty cool. Budapest is a beautiful city.

We live in an American wannabe city, yet some Torontonians feel smug enough to put down Americans when it comes to politics, crime..etc. But anytime a Torontonian hears something about Toronto on CNN, they come running to the TV just so they can here the word Toronto on American TV. Torontonians love the Leafs, and the NHL, but how would the NHL have fared in Toronto, if it stayed a Canadian league, and the US created their own league, with more money, and more teams than a Canadian league? I'm pretty sure that most Torontonians would put down the Canadian hockey league down as inferior, and a minor league to the American hockey league. Canadians, but especially Torontonians are definitely a bunch of people with an inferiority complex in general. Its not that we should be, its just that so many of us think that what we see on American tv should be reality, that we actually believe it is.

Interestingly , Tonight at the game I met a Stamps fan from Chicago who just last season has fallen head over heels in love with the CFL. He's been to a few Stamps, Ticats and now an Argos game. Seems the TV exposure down south is helping. Oh and he says the NFL today sucks. lol
