    NFL Cuts

This site will keep on updating as NFL moves are announced. It focuses on those whose rights are owned by a CFL club or those who signed with an NFL team after playing in the CFL. http://cfldaily.ca/2013/08/31/nfl-ro...nnel-stand-by/

    Some notable cuts are....

Titans release DT Stefan Charles (EDM)
Broncos release OL Philip Blake (MON)
    Eagles release Danny Watkins (BC)
    Vikings release Tyler Holmes (TOR)

Interesting that CSM Philadelphia reporter tweets "I don't think Danny Watkins will play again. I don't think his heart was ever in football. I don't think he likes playing the game." Playing closer to home may change things, don't count him out just yet.

Austin Pasztor, the final piece of the Ricky Ray trade has made the Jags. So far EDM only has Punter Grant Shaw from that trade.

Watkins made $8M during his time in the NFL. Now he's 28, and I have a hard time believing that he'd be motivated to play for a guard's salary in the CFL...

Wasn't Philip Blake a high pick of Denver's only a year ago? With Montreal so beaten up along the o-line, I am sure that they would love to bring him in a.s.a.p. although he will probably wait it out for a while for another NFL shot. Watkins was a first rounder of the Eagles, was he not?

Doug Flutie has always said that the CFL put the fun back into football for him so maybe Watkins needs the same thing.

Interesting that Watkins failed to stick just two (I think) years after being drafted in the first round. The head coach who signed off on his selection is no longer there, so I guess there was no political protection for DW. I hope all of these guys come to the CFL but I'd be surprised if Watkins does after all the money he has made.

So is that it for Tyler Holmes in the NFL? Or will he show up in Toronto this year or next?

Tyler has put up with a lot while pursuing an NFL job - he essentially "shared" a PR spot with Ernest Owusu last year - and gave it a good shot. I think he'll wait a couple of weeks (at least) before committing to anything with Toronto. But my prediction is that he'll join the Argos when the PR is expanded in October and that he'll be put on the 46 man roster at least once this year.

Sadly for Watkins, unless he gets another NFL chance and succeeds, he will go down as one of the bigger busts in NFL history I would think. It isn't often that a first rounder only gets two years to prove himself unless he is that great of a disappointment. Hopefully for his sake, and unlike so many other first round picks, he has held on to all of that money that he has made.

Given the upcoming Ottawa expansion draft, I wonder if the Argos will make much of an effort to sign him this year - as they would then have to protect him - although if he decides on his own that he wants to come to the CFL this year, they won't have any choice.

I don't understand the last part, Ravi. Could the Argos lose his rights if he declared an interest in the CFL and we declined to offer him a contract?

No, the Argos can't lose his rights but it probably would not be good form for them to do that. If Holmes says that he wants to sign with the Argos, it would behoove them to negotiate a contract with him as he is a valuable commodity. Of course, they would then have to protect him in the expansion draft.

    Full Updated list

DL Stefan Charles – Released by Tennessee Titans
CB Loyce Means – Released by Green Bay Packers
OLB Chris McCoy – Released by Philadelphia Eagles
OL Danny Watkins – Released by Philadelphia Eagles
OL Tyler Holmes – Released by Minnesota Vikings
OL Philip Blake – Released by Denver Broncos
WR Jeremy Kelley – Released by Indianapolis Colts
DE Jason Vega – Released by Dallas Cowboys
OT Edawn Coughman – Released by Dallas Cowboys
LB Kenny Rowe – Released by Arizona Cardinals

Also WR Austin Collie was released. I believe he is born in HAM (father played in CFL) but wouldn't count as a non-import. Looks like WPG's draftee Andy Mulumba has made the Packers 53 man roster

Not a "cut" but NFL worthy news - Former Argo, Armond Armstead was put on the non football IR after a surgery after an infection.

Duan Ford and Jim Popp sent out interesting tweets about this type of thing yesterday. Ford thinks that the PA will push to get more players with Canadian ties (IE born in Canada/Canadian citizens) to count as non import players. Popp responded that he believes they should be considered non imports.

I totally agree. I think anyone born in Canada, regardless of where they grew up and learned football should definitely be a NI. I also like the thought of any import player that goes out and becomes a Canadian citizen should turn into a NI. Pinball should have been a NI in the later stages of his career IMO.

Justin Medlock was released but I think he's done in the CFL and NFL, thought he said that last year. Luke Willson has made the Seahawks so I guess there goes another one of our picks to the NFL.

That is a huge blow to the Bombers considering that they have the worst Canadian talent in the league, by far, IMO.

Jason Vega will reportedly join the Cowboys PR. Another Bomber making the cut is the Christo Bilukidi who of course made the Raiders last year.

Maybe if the Argo made a two or three year contract commitment to Medlock he might be interested. He could make a difference in a close playoff game or GC. The guy doesn't miss FG's too often, and he is a decent punter.
