BMO is supposed to be City owned but one would think by reading most media releases that MLSE owns it. The original deal when the all three levels of Government put money into building the stadium that is was to be for both the Argos and the MLSE owned Soccer club. I would think that is one of the reasons the Provincal and Federal Governments have be slow coffing up another 10 million each. MLSE did also put 30 million (?) into the original deal but then was allowed to recoup that through the naming rights. So am I missing something here. C & S pulled out of the deal. Was that because they didn't want to put money into the place? But if they had put money into it shouldn't they have been allowed to share the naming rights money instead of MLSE getting it all.
C&S were supposed to pay $20M towards the $50M cost of York stadium (which was covered by the naming rights, much like how MLSE financed BMO). Then the stadium price-tag started to balloon and C&S were on the hook for all cost over-runs. That's when Rogers came up with their sweetheart deal with free Argos rent as long as crowds exceeded 30,000 (with Rogers keeping all the concession revenue.) Now the Argos pay one of the highest rental fees in the league. So in the long-run it's normally better to buy than rent.
York U stadium is on again, they started to dig ... https://ca.news.yahoo.com/toronto-my...201936245.html
This keeps dragging as fans and the whole organization sinks. Depressing as this long cold winter drags.
Exactly Angelo. Plus the diehards feel like they've been kicked in the gut with this mess. It all just makes me sick.
Everyday we get to watch boatloads of stories on MLSE owned teams that all fail and zero news about our Argonauts. Turns me off of sports.
From what my account representative told me there wasn't ever much chance to be at BMO Field for 2015 as the Argonauts have to give about 12 months notice if they want to leave the Rogers Centre early.
Bit of a delayed response and may carry no relevance whatsoever. Are those TFC fans who are opposed the Argos move to BMO aware that Rugby is played there 1-3 times a summer and their soccer pitch remains just fine? I know it's not many games, but I can tell you that the sport is hard on turf and grass. I've heard no mention of TFC losing games because the good old rugby match is too hard on the terrain. I was chatting it up with a TFC fan the other day and he straight up didn't even believe me that Rugby matches go on at BMO. If the terrain can handle a rugby match and a soccer game within days, I'm sure eight or nine football games won't do much to ruin the pitch at all.
Obviously there are going to be some TFC fans that are aware of Rugby being played at BMO Field and some that aren't. Regardless, that doesn't negate their concerns regarding the condition of the field with even more games being played on it. There have been issues in the past at other stadiums with football being played before soccer and the condition of the field effects soccer more than it does football in most cases. One of the concerns is if the cost of keeping the condition up to standard escalates or they can't be kept up to standard that re-installing field turf maybe considered. It would be nice if the new hybrid surface they're looking at installing at BMO Field could be installed and tested before any deals are made but that doesn't appear likely.
The Argos used to play on resodded fields all the time at the old CNE Stadium. Every year after the CNE stage was removed that portion of the field had new sod laid down. Maybe they could resod between the hash marks in late August, hopefully when football wouldn't be played for a couple of weeks to allow it to take root.
Some of those games at the CNE after new sod was laid down used to be an adventure the first week.
