Tom Higgins let go as director of officiating

It wasn't Higgins' choice as the league implied in a press release this week: http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...044/story.html

I thought that the officiating improved under Higgins' watch and I believe that it is far better than it was years ago. Whenever I watch the NFL, I think that their officiating isn't as good as ours. Their replay system is definitely not as good. Anyway, I hope that Higgins lands on his feet somewhere in the CFL.

There is speculation that he could end up with Ottawa as new HC Campbell worked with him in Edmonton.

BTW, Glen Johnson is the new head of officiating. He is retiring as a referee.

I don't share the opinion that CFL officiating is as good as the NFL. I think they win in that category recent errs aside. But I do agree I like our replay system better.

Sometimes it's hard to say if it's the officiating that lacks or the mandates from the office. Some of those late hits on QB's calls in the CFL are so bad, you can't help but wonder where the guidelines are established.
It's us vs the rest of the country

Officiating is a tough and thankless job, but having said that, CFL officiating has enormous room for improvement. I'd like to see more resource$ put into this pillar of the league to try to make it better.
An increase in the salary cap would also be helpful, and IIRC the cap is set to rise.
Even so, at the end of the day, the CFL will always remain a unique example of a professional sports league that actually exists at a human scale.
