    NFL draft and CFL implications

    - top CFL draft prospect Laurent Duvernay-Tardif taken in the 6th round by the Chiefs = might not scare off some CFL teams from taking a flyer on drafting D-T fairly early, compared to if he had been an earlier NFL pick?; also, the Chiefs did not draft a receiver, but did draft a return specialist type, which could affect Weston Dressler's shot there (IMO - if the Chiefs coaching staff have much evaluating brains - Dressler will be an impact receiver there - they have been underwhelming at receiver for years now IMO)

    - Canadian D-Lineman and last year's Ticat 2nd round pick - Brent Urban - drafted in the mid rounds by the Ravens; = Pussycats end up being burned big time in last year's CFL draft - their top 2 picks, both D-Linemen (Gaydosh & Urban) are in the NFL for the time being

    - Detroit Lions use a 2nd round pick to draft an inside linebacker = could affect Cory Greenwood's shot to make the roster, and with a new braintrust in place there - maybe they go with a younger, cheaper, more highly rated linebacker ?

    - the Saints use a later round pick on a safety = could affect Marcus Ball's shot there ? (IMO - Ball is such a good player, he will make it there - either as a starting impact safety or a good back-up who can be very good on special teams too)

    - the Colts used a later round pick on an LB - which could affect Henoc Muamba's shot there (IMO - Mumaba, like Ball, is such a good player he will make it there as a LB or at least a special teams ace/gunner)

    - the Raiders did not draft a RB - which could help Kory Sheets chance to make their roster ?

Good analysis, but I disagree with the Dressler part. If he's not returning kicks, he will not make the team. Without the luxury of the waggle, he will get manhandled at the line by the bigger DB's he will face down there. He may make it as a 3rd down receiver, but only if he is returning kicks.

We'll have to agree to disagree then; Dressler - IMO - is a far better receiver talent than literally dozens of NFL roster players; and smaller receivers like Welker or Steve Smith have been dominant NFL receivers for years now; the Cowboys have undrafted 5-8, 177 receiver Cole Beasley on their roster and he plays and makes catches. Dressler is in a good situation with the Chiefs IMO - they have had little to zip at receiver for years now - Dressler gets a real shot and doesn't struggle early in camp and he could easily be a starter there; "under-sized" or not, he is total receiver package of hands, speed, route running and YAC yards skill - don't see how that could not be clear as day from seeing him play in the CFL.

Take another look at Welker and Smith. They may be shorter than most NFL receivers, but they are much stronger than Dressler. I will put Dressler's quickness and hands up there with either of them. But with the DB allowed to line up literally inches away from him, Dressler is going to have a difficult time getting off the line where he can use his assets. He will be manhandled. Dressler is going to have to get a lot thicker in his body type.

There are plenty of big NFL receivers - guys well over 6 feet tall and 200 pound plus; Wes Welker is listed at 5-9, 185 and yet he not only beats out lots of much bigger receivers in the NFL for playing time, AND he is also one of the most dominant or productive receivers in the entire league for years now ??? - so are you saying it's mostly because Welker is some kinda super strong freak who at 185 can bench or squat 10 times what Dressler could?
Welker (or Cole Beasley - 5-8, 177 receiver who plays in the Cowboys offence) obviously do not get "manhandled" by NFL DBs, but you are certain Dressler would ??? Ok - we shall see. And I guess Dressler the weakling was able to be a dominant CFL receiver because he was up against mostly weak, inferior DBs here ?

I couldn't agree more. Dressler is no different then Beasley in Dallas and is a phenomenal route runner. He works harder than most receivers. As much as I'll miss him in Riderville I hope he leaves footprints down the backs of opposing secondaries down there.

We shall see. I think he's very good as well, but I'm just saying he's going to have a tough time beating bigger DB's off the line. If he can't do it right away, he won't be playing much at receiver.

Beasley is primarily a 3rd down slot receiver who averages less than 10 yards per catch. Dressler should be able to handle that type of role if he can't land a starting gig. Though his age (29) could work against him making the team.

Hate to say I told you so....but Dressler was released yesterday.

Apparently the Bombers want him. That would really be funny if he lined up against the Riders in the LD classic or Banjo Bowl.

The RedBlacks are also going to make a pitch for him.

Argos should make the call to Dressler as well but probably won't.

I like Dressler, but he's not a great fit for the team. Our top two receivers are already small, quick guys, and what we really need is a bigger guy who can make contested catches. I don't mean to suggest that we need an exact replacement for Inman (Chiles would be close enough, if he can start performing), but ideally we need a variety of receiver types.

Dressler could help us, but he could help other teams more - we'd need to spend an unwise amount to outbid them.

I was listening to TSN radio, and Sciantti commented that Dressler would be seeking 250K .... might be tight with Ricky, Chad and Durie.

There is no way that I can see the Argos being in those sweepstakes. Ottawa is reportedly willing to open the vault for Dressler to the tune of $250k per season.

That's ridiculous money. He's good, but not that good. He has never led the league in any offensive categories, and he's asking for more money than Owens makes.

So, the Argos owner is putting no funds into the team, that they are now in talks with signing QB Tate Forcier out of Michigan, who was a bust with the Cats

Just think how big the pregame Dressler jersey-burning bonfire would be!

I don't think he's asking for that..... The Rouge et Noir are offering that.

One of the good marketing ploys for the CFL ..... Not that the banjo Bowl needs something to increase viewership.
