Great video, thanks. No one in that video exaggerated as he was that good.
I grew up in Hamilton in the 50s and 60s and was a big Cookie Gilchrist fan. As a TiCat he played FB, MLB and kicked field goals. He was such a powerfull runner that he had to be gang tackled.
He was a great promoter, but also a bit of a flake.
As a kid I had a coin that he used to hand out and it had a bump or pimple on one side that allowed you to spin the coin. On the other side it said, "Lookie, Lookie, There Goes Cookie".
As a Buffalo Bill he once decided to take a play off, so he went up to his backup and sent him in. The coach was not amused.
Cookie is the only player to turn down induction to the CFL Hall of Fame. He claimed that the CFL was racist. I'm not sure but I think his reasoning was that there were not enough black coaches and GMs. Of course he overlooked the fact that the CFL offered jobs to black QBs decades before the NFL.
Heard a story from a Bills fan in Buffalo - Cookie never went out of bounds and always fought to get those extra yards. Once he was traded to Denver, his replacement went out of bounds on his first carry and all of the Buffalo fans booed him. Sums up what kind of player he was.
