    Kent Austin's sideline demeanour

I can recall Paul Woods having concerns about Kent Austin's sideline demeanour years ago when Austin was the offensive coordinator of the Argos. I was reminded of that after reading these comments from an anonymous source in Kirk Penton's fine column in today's Winnipeg Sun (also featured in the Toronto Sun):

“(Kent) Austin’s act is getting old. It’s embarrassing. Bitching at his players, screaming at the officials every series. Same crap in league meetings. Rolling his eyes, pissed off when we don’t do things his way. I didn’t say anything but I probably wasn’t the only person in the room thinking hope this guy leaves the CFL again."

Screamers like Austin tend to have a short shelf life with any one team as their players eventually tune them out.

The comments quoted by the insider come as no surprise. He has been on the verge of a complete head explosion all season. He seems perpetually angry, and is also contemptuous of reporters. Some of those reporters may in fact ask dumb questions, but it does the team and the league no good to make enemies of them, which is what will happen if he keeps going on this track.

Kent was like this as a player, no surpise it followed him to his coaching career. I was reading the book End Zones and Border Wars and there was a chapter on the Lions. Players had favoured McManus to start and even told Ritchie to start him over Austin. It even went on to say that when McManus was in the huddle, players played hard and wanted to win with McManus. Kent was smart but didn't seem to have many fans in the locker room.

I like Austin ... he coaches with feeling. He's way better than some of the other "damp dishrag" coaches out there.

He's a bag of crap. Never liked him and I'm surprised no player has bashed his face in yet.

Austin is quite entertaining to watch, get the impression he thinks he is the smartest man in pro football, constantly shows up his players (particularly his QB) on the sidelines, good luck to him with that approach, seem to recall Cortez had a similar smug attitude which didn't fly in the Hammer.
