Greg Quick was named the defensive coordinator of the Saskatchewan Roughriders today. And who brought Quick to the CFL? Jim Barker, of course. Quick was the Argos linebackers coach in 2010 and 2011 under Barker.
When I look at the coaching staffs around the league today, I would suggest that nobody has had a greater influence in the league currently than Jim Barker. Mike O'Shea and Scott Milanovich both got their coaching starts under Barker as did the highly-touted Orlando Steinauer. Chris Jones coached with Barker in Montreal in the early 2000s but only became a defensive coordinator under Barker as GM in Calgary in '08. While Steve McAdoo first coached in Montreal from '03 to '06, it was really under Barker starting in 2010 that McAdoo cemented his reputation as an offensive line coach. If you look at Edmonton's coaching staff alone, Jonathan Himebauch, Ed Philion, Jason Shivers, Craig Davoren and Kez McCorvey were all brought to the CFL as coaches by Barker. Himebauch originally came to the CFL as a player in 1999 when Barker was head coach of the Argos. Jason Maas and Bryan Chiu in Ottawa both got their CFL coaching starts under Barker as well. The influence of Jim Barker in today's CFL should not be underestimated.
