1955 Stadium plan - 75-100,000 seats in the Don Valley

Here's an interesting picture posted by Toronto's chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat - plans in 1955 for a network of expressways, AND a 75,000 seat stadium in the Don Valley.

(Some day I'll figure out how to post images on here properly.)

75,000 Seats for Valley Stadium Plan

Board of Control last night asked for a report on the feasibility of building a civic stadium in the Don Valley just north of the Prince Edward Viaduct.
Controller Cornish moved that Parks Commissioner George Bell investigate erection of a 75,000 to 100,00 seat stadium on city owned lands north of Riverdale Park.
It would be suitable for Grey Cup games, international soccer, British Empire and Olympic Games, and baseball and other sports events.

Given inflation and population growth, we should now be planning a 750,000-seat stadium.

Would still be one of the quietest in the CFL.

Luckily they didn't build this monstrosity ... can you imagine this nowadays ... a cavernous, empty stadium just off the DVP.

At least the city fathers were concerned about where they'd host Grey Cup and Olympic games...not thrown in the towel like the current administrators who said they'll never be able to host the Olympics...or a Grey Cup game in Toronto if the Argos go.

    Trillium Dome Concept

This plan for a dome in Mississauga, Ontario was considered in 1983. The site was approximately 25 kilometers from Toronto. Plans were for a publicly financed, multipurpose dome that seated approximately 65,000. Due to land acquistion problems, the plan was abandoned and the SkyDome was eventually built.

    1960's Toronto

Several stadium concepts were proposed in the late 60's and 70's for Toronto. Common in 1960's stadium architecture, most were for round, multipurpose facilities.

This project was proposed in 1968 for a 1976 Olympics bid

This concept would have been just to the East of where Rogers Centre is now

This project was proposed in 1959 for a 1964 Olympics bid

This project was a concept based at Toronto's North York area in 1971

And as those photos show, football, despite the 1982 Grey Cup being the impetus for the construction of this stadium, was a complete afterthought.

Ravi, I don't believe the '82 Grey Cup was the reason for construction of the stadium, but rather Paul Godfrey used the convenience of the situation to make CFL fans believe that the stadium was being built for them. Like pretty well every time Paul Godfrey speaks, he was lying.

    Yes very true.
Also why I am very suspicious about anything that MLSE comes out with, regardless of the Bell connection.

What has MLSE come out with in regards to the Argos at BMO Field that you are "very suspicious" about?

Hosting an Olympic games would be the financial ruin of Toronto.

Like Rogers, the ulterior motive for MLSE is Larry "the wannabe NFL" Tannanbaum still being a part.

You got that right. For the life of me, I don't understand why countries continue to bid on the Olympics. I'd love to see a time when nobody bids, and see the freeloaders of the IOC start to sweat with the thought of either funding the games themselves, or canceling them altogether.

Time to build a stadium on the water in the shape of the Argonaut boat logo. If they could build the Palm or whatever it's called in Dubai then we can have our boat. It would be a huge tourist draw as well.

Basically I'm SICK of stadium talk. Thanks to the buttplugs at Rogers we need to piss more money away on a new stadium or a make shift reno on a crap stadium in BMO. Whatever is done in TO won't be good enough because Torontians have their heads to far up their asses to ever be satisfied. Nothing is ever enough or good enough.

We're getting there, with the 2022 Winter Olympics bid. All the desireable cities dropped out - Krakow, Lviv, Oslo and Stockholm. What's left are Almaty (Kazakhstan), and Beijing. Neither of which is getting anybody too excited.

(Denver won the right to host the 1976 Winter Olympics (in 1970) and then in 1972 the voters rejected a tax increase to pay for it all, and the city dropped out; the IOC scrambled to move things to Innsbruck which had hosted in 1964.)

Singapore has a floating 30,000 seat soccer stadium in the harbour, which apparently will be unused after a new landside stadium is built. Maybe we could sail it over here :-)

So the next two Winter Olys will be in Asia. We can pretty well say farewell to NHLers in Olympic hockey. (Which won't bother me in the slightest, actually.)

As for Toronto ever hosting an Olympics, surely this horrendous idea will never come to fruition.

    Absolutely, we agree on something.
There is no better recent example of corruption like the Pan Scam Games that will likely cost $3B large or who knows even more when the tally comes in.
The Olympics are rotten to the core, with politicians and the Olympic committee throwing themselves at each other with our hard earned dollars used for bribes etc..
