Argos swap LB Shea Emry to Sask for DE Ricky Foley

ARGONAUTS BRING HOME DE RICKY FOLEY IN DEAL WITH RIDERS

TORONTO - The Toronto Argonauts have brought home national DE Ricky Foley, who was named Most Valuable Canadian of the 100th Grey Cup as a member of the Double Blue, in a trade with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In exchange, the Argos have sent national LB Shea Emry to Saskatchewan.

I guess this means that Cory Greenwood will be the Argo's opening day MLB... or will it be Jones.

Foley should be a good bookend to surprising Okpalaugo.

I know I don't post much, but much of you were complaining that Emry looked like he lost a step during the season. I guess Burke couldn't work his magic with Emry after all.

Emrys play did improve as the season went on, but Greenwood should be able to step in with Jones at MLB. If Foley is allowed to play his game under Burke, this could be a great trade for the Argos who need a pass rusher across from Okapaluogo.

I love this move, Argonauts are deep at linebacker but have struggled on the D-Line since Foley left.
Foley's issues in Toronto centred around his role in Chris Jones's defensive schemes, Emry for whatever reason never really got on track in Toronto, I would expect Greenwood will be a more than adequate replacement at linebacker!!!!

I'm not surprised that we traded Emry, but I wasn't expecting Foley back. This is a nice move, obviously, since we would have had a tough time using both Emry and Greenwood efficiently. I didn't pay any attention to RF last season, but it seems like he had a pretty good year.

Can someone please explain why Foley went to Saskatchewan? Was he not resigned for salary cap reasons?

I believe Foley left the Argos because he did not like his role in Chris Jones defence. I see Tim Burke letting him loose. Foley, for a pass rusher gets a lot of tackles, which shows be is strong against the run too.

Here's hoping that Foley's return to Toronto does not involve you know who reappearing in these parts.

I can only suspect that the Argos have plenty of faith in Greenwood or Jones at MLB as other posters have said.

I am interested to see Foley and the Okpalaugo Lake Monster lining up together.

Mixed reaction to the trade on Rider forum....they seem to like the age difference between the players involved. Good thing is Foley, at age 33 is a fitness freak like Gary Roberts was even at age 40.

I'm not a huge fan of Foley, but this gives us another NAT starter. We dealt from a position of strength -- I expect Greenwood to step in and easily be as good as Emry was last season. Can he be as good as the Emry of 2-3 years ago? We'll see but I think that's a good possibility. And Jones is a hell of LB as well so maybe we will be able to fit both him and Greenwood into the starting lineup. I second argofan87's sentiments re Area 51.

In addition to using him almost exclusively as a pass rusher, I believe that Saskatchewan also took him off special teams last year. I think that was a very good idea and one we should adopt.

Not surprised Emry was traded but am surprised at Foley coming back to the Argos. I guess all is forgiven. But as a straight football deal it makes the Argo defense better balanced. Three good Canadian starters on defense now with Foley, Greenwood and Gabriel. Makes me wonder if Laing is as good as gone.

Wow! Always fun to get some CFL news and this one surprised me! IF we use Foley mainly as a pass rusher, I think it is a great move. I do think Emry would have been better in his 2nd year but he didn't seem to fit in as well as we all would've liked. I think this will motivate Foley to play at home in front of family again!

I'm gonna miss Foley's speed. The man had wheels even at 33.

Why would Laing be good as gone? He is a quality interior NI lineman with a year left on his contract. I count 4 solid Canadian starters on Defence.

Foley and Emry are very similar in the sense that both played on successful defences (2012 in Toronto for Foley and 2013 in Montreal for Emry) but neither was happy in their role and left as a result. I can't add much that hasn't already been said here but I do like this trade from the Argos' standpoint as it fills a clear need along the defensive line while the Argos are deep enough in Canadian linebackers where they could afford to part with Emry. Also, I don't see Foley having a problem playing in Burke's defence as he will be allowed to do what he likes to do.

One other thing that I just though of - Emry does have a history of concussions so that does even up the age difference somewhat (along with Foley having started playing football later so he is a "young" 33 anyway).
