Interesting. Wonder what this will eventually mean to TV rights with his CBC relationships.
It's us vs the rest of the country
I'm calling him Bobby. Jeffery "Bobby" Orridge. Upon first impression I like the guy. Seems down to earth and personable.
The big question is will he be able to get a TV deal in the States. Just the same type money the League is receiving from TSN would be peanuts for ESPN but would be huge for the CFL.
Good luck to the new commissioner!
The ESPN deal signed last summer is "multi-year", doubleblue, and thus far ESPN has chosen to air the minimum number of games in the agreement. I don't think the league can expect much help there.
I would not be surprised if he strong-armed his partners at Bell to release one game per week to Rogers. What TSN would lose in programming, the league would more than gain back in exposure and promotion. But his biggest immediate priority has to be solving the Argos' stadium problem. Some cash from somewhere (Braley or the league) is going to be needed to make that happen, IMO. Not necessarily the full $10M that's been bandied about, but a sizeable contribution so it doesn't seem like a charity handout.
Hopefully now that a full-time commissioner is in place we might finally see some movement on the Argos stadium/ownership situation.
You will probably read in the coming days that Orridge holds a decent amount of responsibility for CBC losing the NHL rights to Rogers. I think that it was inevitable that CBC was going to lose those rights at some point as they simply did not have the funds to compete with Rogers or Bell but Orridge has become a bit of a scapegoat at the CBC for that. This is probably a good time for him to leave that organization. I was impressed with his demeanour at the opening press conference but many fans have to realize that Orridge's personality won't be a carbon copy of the popular Mark Cohon's.
Cameron Dukes + Dan Adeboboye + Kevin Mital + David Ungerer + Damonte Coxie + DaVaris Daniels + Dejon Brissett = Unstoppable Force
Looks like a fantastic choice. I particularly like his experience with sports licensing at Warner Brothers and at Mattel. Here's a guy who understands how to use technology to attract younger fans. Also, his American and internationalist history gives him more cred among the skeptics than another Canadian would have, and breaking the racial barrier sure doesn't hurt either.
How soon until Braley forces him out?
Just kidding (I hope).
I'm glad it's not Tom Anselmi. Orridge appears to have the potential to be a fans Commissioner like Cohon which I think is important to many fans. His resume is also impressive and many of those things can be applied to the job at hand. Time will tell how it all pans out but so far, so good.
The minute he calls Rider fans the best in the league, he'll be dead to me. Cohan kissed enough Rider arse over his years. I just hate the newer band wagon jumping Pil Swillin Tool Rider fans as does every CFL fan I know.
After listening to the favourable comments above and knowing how important the role of commissioner can be, I was somewhat disappointed. In his introduction to the fans he appeared nervous, hesitant and repeatedly read from notes in a rather bland voice. In the 4 minutes and 47 second video he said "um" 28 times. While I recognize that there are skills that are important in a commissioner and he may well be talented in many of those areas, I am already concerned about his ability to sell the league. I hope I am wrong.
Despite the fact I have gratitude for Braley's saving both the Argos and BC Lions, I do agree that the league with the help of the new commissioner has to find new owners for the Argos very quickly. Furthermore, the league has to start about new owners for the Lions as Braley says he wants to get out of team ownership by age 75, which is not that far away.
http://www.torontosun.com/2015/03/17...as-argos-ownerThe CFL appoints a new commissioner, but the same dark, ominous clouds continue to hover over the Toronto Argonauts, questions and uncertainty that can only be remedied with a new owner.
In the absence of a new, vibrant Argos owner who is willing to put a face on this franchise, the CFL is going to lose the momentum it has developed the past few years. ...
