Thoughts on Training camp roster sizes?

Are they too big? By my count, we have to cut 28 guys Saturday, with 10 of those probably going to the practice roster. That seems like a lot to cut. Should training camp rosters be reduced by 5 or 10 guys?

Why would you think that? The more guys in camp, the more guys they get to evaluate. Sounds okay to me.

I think they are a little too big. But then I think the final roster is also too big.

The question is whether bringing a very large number of players keeps one from evaluating some players effectively. I can see both sides of the issue, but there does come a point where more players do reduce the ability to evaluate carefully.

The biggest problem is only having two preseason games to evaluate players. IMO, the sweet spot would be three preseason games but that isn't happening anytime soon.

Why dont CFL teams "pair up", for a week or so during camp. This way controlled scrimmages could be used in the same way as an exhibition contest.

Speaking of TC rosters, looking at the Argos roster now, it appears a lot of players have really put on some weight...ie is Cory Greenwood really 237 lbs? Heck, even the lean Eric Black put on 10 lbs....

Camp is too short for that. They don't want that much hitting in today's camps.

When its all said and done the Argos will probably end up with around 60 players still around counting the 46 man, 10 man PR and injured list. That seems to be the case with all the teams now. Players that don't make the 46 man and they don't want exposed to wavers you will see go on the one game injured list. Candidates for that scenario would be players like Logan Kilgore and Cam Walker. We know Ricky Ray, Fayson, Miles and Steele will start the season on the injured list and there may be more after Thursday Night.
I don't see anymore than 10 at the most of the current roster (71)? being cut and not brought back under some condition.

True enough. The days of improving your roster with late cuts of other teams are more or less gone.

Didn't the Argos acquire Don Moen, Rick Mohr and Rob Smith from B.C. for future considerations at the end of the preseason back in '82? You don't see that sort of thing anymore.

Correct Ravi, today's system is actually kind of boring at times.
I preferred the old 16 regular game and 4 preseason game format, teams were better prepared when the real games started and I think better player evaluation was also possible.

I agree, but it is hard to sell pre-season games to the paying public.

It's rare but Huff did find Eric Rogers on the Ottawa scrap heap last year and it paid off dividends.
