    Blake Sims

    Hi all,

So we have another QB on the roster. Here are some highlight videos of him for those who aren't familiar with his work. I think this could be a real good pickup for us. It will be interesting to see how he copes with the CFL game. If he could hold down the fort until Ray comes back then we can't ask anything more. Who knows, this could be our future right here post-Ray.

He seems talented and I hope he can develop into a useful player for us, but he's not going to be holding down anyone's fort this year unless two or three more QBs get injured.

You don't think he could go up the depth chart? He could have a good training camp and I think he has enough ability.

No matter how brilliant he is, there is a lot to learn. And even if he learns fast, it would be risky to play him over the guys who have waited patiently for their shot. Players hate that, and it is tough to recruit if you have a history of irritating your players.

    Very possible.
My concern is that he only started one year at Alabama.
And behind McCarron? He looks better than McCarron to me. Something isn't right there.

Rookie QBs fresh out of university almost never play for at least a year or two in this league these days. He also has to move up the depth chart over three other backup QBs - one of whom is in their fourth year and the other in their third - so Mr. Sims will do well if he can beat out Logan Kilgore for the #4 spot and dress as the third stringer for a few games in Ray's absence.
Chad Kelly + Dan Adeboboye + David Ungerer + Damonte Coxie + DaVaris Daniels + Dejon Brissett = Unstoppable Force

I agree. His main goal should be to beat out Kilgore, and then go from there.

Just hope he doesn't "retire" before regular camp opens. I'm getting tired of that deal.

Yup, Sims has a long, long road ahead of him. There is so much that he's going to have to learn about.

But if I was running the team, I would do everything possible to accelerate his learning curve. I would want him to be ready to compete for the starter's job in 2016. Kilgore's good as gone. When Ricky comes back, Gale goes to the taxi squad so that Sims can absorb things from the sideline. Maybe he can get some mop-up work later in the season. I'd even go so far as to give him some regular practice reps with the other starters.

Because in the grand scheme of Argoland, this season doesn't really matter that much. I've been saying it for 3 years, i'll say it again: The first season at BMO will be the most important season the Argonauts have ever had. The spotlight will be on them like it hasn't been in 40 years. They not only need to win, they need to have a team that can excite the city. And that starts at QB.

Listen, Ricky could come back from his injury and light it up with a career season this year. But does anybody here think that is likely to happen? Ricky's a warrior and a hall of famer, but lets be honest, QB's don't suddenly find another gear when they're 36, especially when they're battered and bruised. And i don't think a merely average performance from Ray will be good enough to re-sign him to a new contract next year.

To me the ideal scenario this year would be for Ricky to miss half the season so that Trevor Harris can get a lot of game experience. I think Harris will be a solid, if unspectacular, CFL QB. And after grooming Sims all season this year, he can compete with Harris for the starter's job next year, and hopefully win it and set the city on fire when it really matters.

He was never truly behind McCarron - his time with the Tide when he was "behind McCarron", he was either a running back or in mid transition to Quarterback.

I know some NFL teams wanted him to switch positions. I'd love to see a very mobile qb be developed by us. Unless we lose him to Ottawa or something a few years in.

I agree 100 percent. We need to groom and lock up the next QB.
Funny how this signing got more coverage in the states and they think it's great!

I don't disagree that it would be nice to groom the future starter, but hopefully he won't just be anointed as the next one. Preparation and attitude when you are not playing is huge. Trevor Harris has demonstrated great qualities in waiting his turn, as has Mitchell Gale, and frankly, they both look good.

This is professional sports, not the Boy Scouts. Who gives a damn how long anybody has "waited his turn". There should be one consideration and one consideration only: who gives us the best chance to win football games?

So you don't think team morale means anything? Teams rally around players that are good teammates. Takes more than talent to win in pro sports.

The skill set of Blake Sims does remind me a bit of Michael Bishop. We'll see if he gets the chance Bishop did and if he can become a more consistent player than Bishop was.

Even in the Boy Scouts, those with the experience and the knowledge, will very quickly become uncooperative with a newly anointed 'hotshot'. What is that phrase ?? -- uhh -- yes -- "Pull together"

Your right, but at this point, I would welcome Sims to pull a "Willie Beamen", if it meant he had the talent.

I see a young Kerry Joseph when I watch his highlights.
