Leo Cahill Head Coach, Marketing Genius and Recruiter Extraordinaire!

    http://3downnation.com/2015/05/05/le...ts-of-atlanta/

For those who remember the Argos in the 60's and 70's, you'll enjoy this article on Leo Cahill. I missed it when it came out in May.

Leo coached the Toronto franchise of the Continental Football League (CFL) before joining the Argos. He quickly became a media favourite and quickly the empty stands turned into sold out venues. Soon tickets were very hard to come by.

"Leo the Lip" had a good eye for talent, he brought in Bill Symons after he got injured at Green Bay. Players signings were a big deal and Leo kept the team on the front pages in the offseason with these. Jim Stillwagon and Tim Anderson from Ohio State signings were big news. Very talented players, too small for the NFL were perfect for CFL. This helped sell tickets and kept the flame burning.

More known for his trick plays, he was far from a technician. He knew he was in the entertainment business first and foremost and sold the "sizzle". You can have the finest technical Head Coach, but if you fan base goes to zero, ultimately you are worse off. Barnum and Bailey would have been proud!

Interestingly, his teams were very close knit and many players made Toronto their home and can still be seen at Alumni events.

Those were the days when the CFL could bring in NFL stars and in many cases pay them more. Those were the days I fell in love with CFL ball and the Argos. There's always next year was a big saying during that time. 21 years of my life when by before they won a cup. I was born in 62. Plenty of lean but fun years.

You miss characters like Leo Cahill these days, the Argonauts should honour this guy before one of their home games next season.
