    SkyDome Memories

It is official, Friday November 6th, 2015 will be the very last Argonaut game in the SkyDome. What are your fondest memories? Obviously everyone will talk about the 100th Grey Cup but here are some of my favourite moments in no particular order...

    1) Flutie and Drummond option play and both the 1996 and 1997 dominate seasons. I thought we could have went undefeated both years!!!
    2) DK Smith's record TD catch season in 1991.
    3) The excitement in the Dome and the City for the 1991 Eastern Final. What a game and what a start when Pinball ran the kickoff back.
    4) A non-Argo moment but that 1989 Grey Cup was incredible and the best game I have ever seen in person or on TV. Thank God the TiCats lost!
    5) The Argo ownership walking the side lines and hollywood taking over Toronto in 1991!!! Great time to be a fan!
    6) The Shoot Out the Lights offence in 1990 when they tried to run the offence with 3 down linemen. That year was the craziest offensive outburst I can every recall and boy was it exciting. Didn't we destroy BC by almost 70 points one game
CFL alive and well all others can go to Hell!

Can't believe it all comes down to this Friday as being the last game at skydome after 26 years. Amazing how little attention it is getting through media and sports fans in the city. I am feeling a lot of different emotions for this occasion sad the fact we are leaving skydome with so many good memories I have of going to games there, happy that we are leaving the scum bags in Rogers and don't have to listen to them anymore and hopeful of a bright future with this team at bmo field.

Was thinking the other day when some of the teams before who would close out there season at a stadium/arena or when a team had a really bad year a general manager or owner would take the microphone and address the crowd. I remember a couple of occasions like this before with the raptors where they would announce whoever and the crowd would boo them at first when they were introduced but at the end of the speech the crowd would clap and cheer for what they had promised that would happen next year. Wouldn't it be a cool thing if someone from the new owners/CEO would address the crowd to give them a sorry for what has happened to the team the last few years to how they have been treated and to promise and guarantee them that none of this stuff will ever happen at there new home at bmo field.

Anyways I just felt like sharing my feelings with you guys to this historic night on Friday.

All the good times have been marred by the recent years that Rogers has owned the place.
I will miss going to the games there because of the comforts of the dome on a wet, cold day. My season seats were in a spot where the sun never ever shone, so that was great, even on sunny afternoons with the roof open. View was great from my first row seat in the 200 level. Getting to and from the dome was easy. When the place was packed, it was an awesome sight, like the Grey Cups.

Doug Flutie outduelling a young Jeff Garcia on a sundrenched Saturday afternoon in 1996, lower bowl was packed...Kerwin Bell spiking the ball off his groin after scoring a TD against Winnipeg....Kenny Wheaton returning a Danny Mac pass 106 yards in the 2004 Wiggles Playoff game against Hamilton...

Marvin Graves great 4th quarter comeback win in '94 against Hamilton. Down 25 points and scoring 4TD's with the last one to Bobby Gordon for the victory.
Big game for Rob Crifo too, IIRC.

Final score: Argos 39 Pussy Cats 36

For me the 100th Grey Cup will be my greatest Argos memory at the Rogers Centre. I've been following the team since 2009.

I guess Grey Cup 100 by default. Nothing else was very memorable for me.

Loved seeing Byron Parker have a couple pick sixes and Bashir Levingston return a missed FG from inside his own endzone against Calgary. The missed FG, punt out it out of the endzone loss vs the Alouettes was interesting as well.

The Pinball years !!! All those games watching the greatest Argo of all time, in my books, do his thing.
A specific fond memory more recently was when Pinball was coaching the team. The opposition punted the ball out of bounds and Pinball caught it, and then immediately started running with the ball down the sidelines like he was going to score. That got a huge applause.
Remember also when he was coaching that he would take the microphone after a game and start talking. Everyone was of course eager to hear Pinball speak, but he went on and on and half the crowd would leave before he finished, lol.
I miss the "See you on the field" games where we got to meet players and cheerleaders after the game. That was a great idea. Also a great way to view the stadium as the players see it.

I forgot how Kerwin did that! That guy stunk. Was so glad when he left. Too bad we had no stop gap for when Flutie left because that team was incredible and could have won more Cups with the right QB.

How about some non Argo/CFL sports. The 1994 Vanier Cup, a 50 to 40 Western Ontario overtime win over the Saskatchewan Huskies in front of close to 30k was likely one of the best football games I have ever attended.

Some of my favourite memories of SkyDome involve Canadian University football games including going to all 17 Vanier Cup games played there. I especially liked the 1993 season when all OUA playoff games were played at SkyDome. The first round had an exciting double header where my Waterloo Warriors battled WLU into overtime but lost. The other game had Varsity beating Western. The next week had Varsity beating WLU but I wasn't able to get to that game. Next up was the Churchill Bowl where Varsity beat Concordia. Finally, Varsity beat Calgary to win the Vanier Cup just one year after the University of Toronto announced that they were going to fold the team.

    What stands out for me...
1990 - Argos winning big over Calgary
1991 - Rocket debut and the celebrity ownership
1991 - Eastern Final and Dunigan jumping into the crowd
1992 - The Rocket Stomp (not a favourite, just something that stood out)
    1993 - Reggie Slack
1994 - Marvin Graves come back against Hamilton
1995 - Beating Calgary in a meaningless finale but still not expecting it.
1996 - Flutie and the return to respectability. Great win against Garcia.
1997 - Argos beating everybody but especially in week 1 against the Bombers (you just knew this was a special team) and the Eastern Final
1998 - Mookie and his massive game against the BC Lions (4TD's or something)
1999 - The Jumbo Offence (go Peewee!)
    2000 - Pinball's final run.
2005 - New ownership and the skydome actually looking like an Argos stadium
2006 - Ricky Williams debut and Byron Parker's big game against MTL
    2012 - Grey Cup win
2013 - Chad Owens last minute TD for the win against HAM.

Was the Rocket Stomp in 1992, and did it not occur in Calgary?

I have no particular order of events, but I remember many. Dunnigan's return, Pinball's last game. A few playoff games. My son's first game. The time I won tickets for a game in a contest I have no remembrance of entering. Games I witnessed on TV include the '89 Grey Cup, the 91 East final and way too many good ones to even remember the details. It wasn't the best place to watch a football game, but it wasn't the worst. It got sour in the last few years because of Rogers. I may head down this Friday for the last game for old time sake. But, I'm really looking forward to next year in BMO, even though I'll be probably moving to Ottawa for work before the season begins. Oh well, I'll make a trip down for an Argo game at BMO the first chance I get.

Yes September of 1992 I remember sitting in the end zone at that game. I remember the league didn't want to suspend ishmail for any games because he was a big draw at the gate and if I am correct I believe they just gave him a one game suspension and a big fine wich he donated to charity. Week after he went on speakers corner and electric circus and apologized for his actions.
