Remembrance Day! Tea Cup & Coffee Cup Bowls 1944

    image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

Just a few months before D-Day, this friendly football two-game series "The Tea Bowl" and "Coffee Bowl" between U.S Army and Canadian Army was split a game each. In total, 80,000 attended. Game was played under Spitfire cover.

Stars from the precursor to the CFL and the NFL played each other. Argos, Ti-Cats, ALS, Rough Riders and Blue Bombers participated.

Sadly this match was the last game for many players like Jeff Nicklen (below). Nick was a Canadian boy from Winnipeg and a terrific Blue Bomber in his time. He played a big role in the first 16-6 Canada victory over the US team. Nick was subsequently killed on D-Day on June 6th after landing behind the German lines.

That is a great story. In the first game - half by Canadian rules, half by American rules - the Canadians prevailed 16-6. How has this not been made into a movie by now? It'd be great! Paging Paul Gross!
