    Renaming the Eskimos

This has been mentioned before, and it is back in the news. Personally, I think this is inevitable, and that it should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a burden. The challenge is that you'd really want a name that starts with "E", so the logo could be retained. Any thoughts? The Edmonton Elasmosaurs (ref) would be relevant, but that isn't quite as catchy as I'd like...

Some people have too much time on there hands, much more important things for the Inuit to focus on. Political correctness is starting to go way too far IMO and it's not only getting tiring, but also annoying hearing all these types of complaints.

I'd be happy with the "Edmonton Energy". That name was previously used by a now-defunct basketball team, but it's too good to waste.

It is easy for us who are not Inuit to not be offended though. If the majority of Inuit are offended then there is a problem. I have no idea whether the majority of Inuit are offended by this or not.

Indeed. As the league's first "minority" commissioner, one would expect him to take this sort of thing seriously. Orchestrating a franchise name change would be a good way to get some attention for a league that is on reasonable footing and has no current emergencies - but isn't ready to expand. Realistically this is a 2017 (or 2018) issue, but I don't blame Obed for raising it at a time of peak media attention. It is time to start discussing this seriously.

The problem is where does it end ?
How soon before someone from Argos-Mykines, Greece complains about our team name ?
Why isn't there someone fighting for the animals who are used as names and logos, since they have no voice ?
Who gave the Montreal Canadiens the right to use that name, they don't represent me as a Canadian, so should I be offended ?

The worst part of it is, eskimo isn't even a racial slur, the american indigenous seem to have no issue with it. This individual causing the commotion seems to have an issue with it because the Inuit decided to call themselves Inuit and the term eskimo reminds him/and some others of a time where they had no say. So the word itself isn't offensive, just the time it was created in was where the offense occurred. Another thing, these names weren't chosen to be disrespectful, in fact quite the opposite, there's a reason teams are named Blackhawks, Braves, Canucks and not something like the "Cry Babies".

Yours is not a new argument. Most recently, hypothetical escalation has been used to attack the idea of gay marriage. After all, if same sex people can marry, what's to stop a man and a horse from doing the same?

I'm not sure how you consider the two situations similar, but okay.

For sure and an easy one at that. Ignore and resume day to day operations. Truthfully, a non issue for the league as very few really care. Eskimos are here to stay.

The term "Eskimo" means "eaters of raw meat." The football team uses a Polar Bear as a mascot and the bear is an eater of raw meat.

UBC won the Vanier Cup yesterday. Isn't the Thunderbird some sort of native symbol. How long before that's on the chopping block?

I am ok with the Esks changing if we go in order of worst offenders 1st. So as soon as the Reds---s, Cleve Ind---s and Chicago Blawkhawks change theirs names and logos then I think the Esks should follow.

Kinda convenient that this started as a column in the OTTAWA Citizen.

    Why?
What is so special about two "E"s, other than the team has never come up with something more creative and now we are used to seeing it? Time to modernize that as well imo.
Reminds me of the naming of the REDBLACKS. They were so married to the "R" logo from the Rough Riders/Renegades days that they conjured up a stupid name. They should have simply been called the "Lumberjacks" and created an appropriate logo.

My exact thought when I first saw the article!
Slow news day in Ottawa I suppose.
