Your choice. I think the Eskimos case comes down to forcing a label on a group of people that doesn't want that label used, I maybe wrong but I've enjoyed this debate.

So this represents the fighting spirit of the Irish?:

Maybe I'm wrong in my case for why it could be seen as offensive. AngeloV brought it up and I could see his point. I found this on its origin.

Did I say I would like to see all those banned?

I'll be honest, and I mentioned this later in the thread, the comment I made about Notre Dame being called the fighting Irish was more because I don't like Notre Dame. I have never heard an uproar about their nickname.

And I'll ask again, what does this all really have to do with football? Why is it in the CFL room? It's all about personal opinion, similar to political views, and therefore should be in the sociable room.

I agree that is probably what argolio is trying to do, especially with his latest comment:

Ok. However, I can see how a leprechaun representing Irish people could be seen as offensive.

Sometimes football goes beyond just the play on the field and does get involved with social issues which I personally feel is a good thing. If the "Tackle Hunger" program was being discussed here would you feel it should be moved to the "Sociable!" room? We are having a discussion about a CFL teams nickname and whether or not they have a social responsibility to fix their name? The discussion goes beyond just Edmonton but it's still CFL related in my opinion.

Though I don't agree with him I think SnowRogue presented his side of the debate pretty well and I think that debate has pretty much come to an end.

You never explained why. I've tried, I'm curious why do you feel it should be changed?

I was speaking from a broader range here. More towards the Redskins, Black Hawks, Seminoles. And for me, it's not so much the name as it is the logo. I guess I just lumped in the Eskimos with that, despite the fact that there is nothing offensive about their logo. Others have brought up that Eskimo means meat eater, and their mascot is a Polar Bear. I'm starting to waffle on this one.

As for my Notre Dame reference, in that same quote, I went on to reference Bugs Bunny. How serious should that really have been taken?

Ok. I literally just found this article and I think it is very relevant to this debate. Makes the thread title a little ironic. I recommend everyone read it.

I thought you were referencing this which I think is very relevant to the bigger issue and the debate.

Classic comedy show clip from the 80's. Think they could do this today? Speaking of the Irish. If you find this offensive then I feel bad for you. Life would be much better if society had a sense of humour!!!!

Since I heard it in a mall today, I have to ask...

Why is no one demanding a rewrite of "The Christmas Song"?

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yule tide carols being sung by a choir
    Folks dressed up like Inuit

Sadly, Nat King Cole is no longer with us to record the revised lyrics.

Why not ask the Aboriginal peoples and Inuit to give names for the rename of the Eskis? Give parameters (needs to mean something forceful, strong or warrior-esque, needs to start with an E and Needs to be simple/pronounceable by "foreigners" i.e. anyone of non aboriginal culture) and have at it. Then have Edmonton vote on the ones provided.

boom, problem solved. Strong sounding, heritage based and PC all in one.

I just watched a UFC clip on youtube. It was the Holly Holm Q&A at UFC 194. The crowd had tons of Irish fans from Ireland and guess what? There were Irish fight fans dressed up as a leprechaun at fight event. (the Irish cheered them too) So .... so much for them being offended.

This thread has run its course. If at some time this "controversy" reestablishes itself then I'll reconsider reopenjng it.
