Uzooma Okeke has turned down a contract extension as Football Operations Assistant/Scout with the Alouettes and joined the BC Lions instead. Okeke had been in Montreal since 2007 and the change to BC was a lateral move rather than a promotion, so it seems much more likely that he had been comfortable there until the problems became overwhelming. With so many others in management escaping the chaos of Montreal under Kavis Reed, including a flood of administrators and players who moved to Toronto, this is another sign of the deep trouble in Montreal.

The BC Lions Football Club today announced that UzoomaOkeke has been added to the team’s football operations department as its southeast regional scout.
    Okeke
, whose career in the CFL dates back to his days with the Shreveport Pirates in 1994 is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame (2014) and was most recently part of the Montreal Alouettes player personnel staff.

Having established more than 10 years of effectively scouting both Canadian and American players makes Uzooma a very valuable addition to our player personnel department,” said GM Ed Hervey from Los Angeles where he is currently attending practices in advance of Saturday’s NFLPA Bowl. “His remarkable playing career combined with his dedication to the role of a scout has given him a distinct eye for talented football players uniquely suited for the CFL.”
A graduate of SMU, the hulking offensive tackle was a seven-time CFL All-Star and earned the league’s Most Outstanding Lineman award in 1999. He appeared in four Grey Cup games with the Als, winning in 2002. Following his retirement after the 2006 season, the Texas native joined the Montreal front office where he served through 2017.

Jordan Herdman discusses how playing in the Senior Bowl last year helped him. He also talks about his twin brother winning the Grey Cup with the Argos.

He parlayed his Senior Bowl experience into springtime workouts with the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions. ...
Along with impressing those important onlookers, another big perk of suiting up in Mobile is the chance to test your skills against some of the top talent the NCAA has to offer. Herdman’s teammates included Chiefs’ running back Kareem Hunt, Philadelphia Eagles’ running back Corey Clement and receiver Trent Taylor, now with the San Francisco 49ers. The quarterback contingent in that game included the Buffalo Bills’ Nathan Peterman and future Pittsburgh Steelers’ draft pick Josh Dobbs.

Imagine being a quiet, humble kid from the Burnaby Mountain campus surrounded by all of that talent in a football-mad environment like Alabama.
“You can tell football is just religion down there,” he said. ...
To say the experience paid off for Herdman would be an understatement. The club’s seventh-round draft choice recorded 19 special teams tackles in his rookie season, second only to Chandler Fenner. He also was known for being one of the more tenacious members of the special teams coverage unit. Now comes the task of increasing that output in year two. ...

“I’m definitely excited and I expect a lot from myself this coming year,” Herdman stated.
“I want to prove it each year and have high hopes for every season.”
The fact his twin brother Justin earned a Grey Cup championship in his rookie season with the Toronto Argonauts is all the motivation he needs these days.
“Yeah he is definitely happy about that and has bragged a couple times about getting his ring,” Jordan chuckled.
“I’m happy for him. A lot of guys go their whole career without winning one. I was so happy for him. That’s the goal every year, to get to that Grey Cup. I am just as hungry as I was last year to get it. I’m just going to do what I can to put the work in so I can be ready when the season comes.”

The Lions have signed QB Michael Birdsong who attended the Saints mini-camp last year.

The B.C. Lions have signed quarterback Michael Birdsong, the team announced Wednesday.
Birdsong attended mini-camp with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints in 2017.
The six-foot-four, 240-pound pivot began his collegiate career at James Madison in 2013, seeing action in 37 games. He also made stops at Marshall University and Tennessee Tech, recording a career total 527 completions on 881 attempts for 6,148 yards with 45 touchdowns.
Birdsong, 24, will attend the Lions’ three-day mini-camp in late April at their practice facility in Surrey.

GM Ed Hervey discusses the importance of off-season work in attending bowls, going to tryout camps, and signing free agents, including those yet to be signed such as Travis Lulay below.

He knows that Grey Cups are not technically won until November. That being said, it is the work done between January and May that can define your team’s fate. That’s what he will remind his scouting stuff at the upcoming US free agent camps, CFL Draft and 2018 Training Camp at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops. ...
His former teammate and new Lions’ Director of Player Personnel Torey Hunter is with him in Alabama. The familiar duo joins a dedicated staff that includes Neil McEvoy and Geroy Simon for an important offseason evaluation process.“There is trust there. Torey and I have known each other over 20 years. He’s very knowledgeable, very smart, good with the players and he understands my philosophy on not just the type of players, but how we treat the players with respect and like people, not pawns in a game,” Hervey said.
“We have both been there. That is some of the advantage that we have over the non-playing scouts. Not to take away from how good people are, but Torrey and I understand the grind of playing and what it’s like to play to have to put food on your table.”
If you have any doubts, just look at the blueprint they followed to rebuild the Edmonton Eskimos. Brandon Zylstra, Derel Walker and Aaron Grymes are just a few of the guys they convinced to come north after camps and workouts south of the border. Those additions seem like no brainers now, but the new boss insists there is a specific template that must be followed when it comes to wooing young American talent.
“In order to get the most out of the player when he comes to the CFL he has to have a strong motivation to play and a passion for the game,” the three-time Grey Cup champion said.
“There also has to be humility. You’re not going to make what the NFL offers. When you’re coming up here it is a ‘pay your dues’ league.”
If you’re coming in loud, talking about how you’re going to be the best player in the league, all these other loudmouth things that you hear you’ll find another thing coming. We have good players in this league and we always explain to our prospects that you cannot underestimate the quality of play and the quality players in the CFL because you will be embarrassed and humiliated quickly.”
The evaluation process and finding those future all-stars and current unknowns is just one part of the equation. The other is locking up key pieces that will make up the 46-man roster when the Lions kick off their season on June 16th at home to Montreal. Hervey has already been busy re-signing key pieces Emmanuel Arceneaux, Shaq Johnson, Antonio Johnson, Cody Husband and TJ Lee.
All of those players, especially the linemen, have bought into Hervey’s theory that after a 7-11 campaign, the mindset must be different going forward.
“It’s imperative that we have the buy in,” the GM said.
“I feel like the message is coming across to them, but it’s the effort that the players put into the offseason and what they show after training camp is where the first opportunity of that proof is to be seen. We have a long way to go, but we all have to have that common understanding of what our responsibility is going into the season.”
The CFL free agency period opens on February 13th, and before jumping into the pool and adding some of the top talent available Hervey still has a couple pending free agents of his own to think about. One of those is Travis Lulay. The veteran pivot continues to rehab from the September knee injury and indicated on TSN 1040 last week his plan is to play football for as long as he can. Hervey plans to speak with the 34-year old when he returns to the Surrey office next week.

“I wanted to leave it in his hands and not apply any pressure to him while he was rehabbing,” Hervey said.
“Travis has earned the right to make his decision. From what I am hearing from everyone working with him and his representative, he is in good spirits. That’s always a positive. Until I have a chance to talk with him myself, hear what his thoughts are and get a feel for what his plans are, we won’t know. As far as the BC Lions are concerned, if Travis is interested in playing I would love to talk to him and have a place for him.”

BC is continuing the "Be more than a Bystander" program on stopping violence against women that it began in 2011 and that five other CFL teams are now involved in throughout the season and the off-season. The Lions have running on TV, as well as several times a game on their Jumbotron, featuring players speaking up on the issue. They also have players visiting schools to talk to kids on the issue, as in the following video. The players really grab the student's interest.
Buono was instrumental in starting this this because he had to intervene to stop his mother from being beaten up in her own home.

Lions have added three WRs to their roster: National Mitchell Hills who attended last year's Lions TC, and Internationals Robert Wheelwright and Jenson Stoshak who attended NFL and Rider TCs respectively.

BC has released LB Micah Awe after one year in the CFL so that he can sign with the NY Jets, which contrasts with the Argos and James Wilder.

Further evidence that the league needs to decide what are the rules with regards to contracts comes from Ed Hervey deciding to release LB Micah Awe because he was promised this "by someone who is no longer with the team", the exact opposite of what Popp decided to do with Wilder and Butler under similar circumstances.

Hervey, who was hired by the Lions in late November to help turn around the team after a lacklustre 7-11 in 2017, said that Awe was “promised an opportunity by someone who is no longer with the organization, but we’re not about to stand in his way.”
It doesn’t sound like Hervey is going to to give out such options frequently.
“This isn’t going to be a common practice,” Hervey also said when asked about the situation.
Oddly enough, the CFL connection with the NFL has become a hot-button topic around the league of late. Toronto Argonauts running back James Wilder Jr., announced earlier this month that he plans to sit out the season because the Argos won’t let him out of his contract to pursue NFL opportunities.
Toronto defensive lineman Victor Butler wrote on 3DownNation, a website covering CFL, that the Argos are going back on a gentleman’s agreement to let him out of his deal to look for an NFL job.

In obtaining Odell Willis from the Redblacks, the Lions hope to improve their pass rush, which ranked seventh in the league at 28 sacks, just a little over half that of the top ranked Argos and Stampeders who tied for the league lead at 50 sacks.

The Lions were fined $2,500 last year for letting Adam Bighill go to pursue NFL opportunities. BC was so deeply impressed by the size of the fine that they did the same thing again with Micah Awe this year.
