Exclamation 2016 Grey Cup @ BMO Field

IIRC it was reported that the capacity for the 2016 Grey Cup is going to be around 40,000. The leafs announced yesterday that they will be playing the Centennial Classic at BMO Field and the article from The Hockey News says that the capacity for the Centennial Classic is going to be 35,000.

Shouldn't the capacity be more than the Grey Cup since a NHL Rink is much smaller than a CFL Field?

Not necessarily; it's possible that 5000 of those seats were deemed less than advantageous for hockey.

For the NHL outdoor games, there are no field level seats. Even for the ones played in football stadiums.

Still, I would think that capacity would be the same as Grey Cup.

The 40,000 for the Grey Cup was an estimate, I think. I would not be surprised if the total seating capacity turns out to be less that that.

The NHL doesn't sell tickets on the field for outdoor games -- seems like a missed opportunity to me. It would be quite the party to be down there.

Yeah it has me wondering what the actual capacity of the 2016 Grey Cup is going to be.

Yeah you would think that they could put sets of bleachers right on the field for an outdoor NHL game.

The whole point For Bell is to get double the bang for your buck for the bleachers and keep them in the same spot for both events.

For what they could charge leaf fans I think it would be worthwhile to add extra seats for the hockey game.

I'm not taking about bleachers on the field. That wouldn't work because it would just obstruct the permanent seats. But I think the NHL could sell standing-room tickets penned in around the rink. Obviously there are cameras and other things down there to accommodate, but whenever I watch an outdoor game I can't help but notice that often there is no one standing at what I would think would be prime, expensive spots next to the boards.

Wouldn't the outdoor hockey game use the soccer expanded setup instead of the football configuration ?

There are 25,000 seats on the sidelines at BMO. To reach 40,000, a temporary 15,000-seat grandstand would have to be erected in one end-zone...which would be bigger than either sideline grandstand. A technical impossibility, I believe. More likely the maximum capacity will be in the 36-37,000 range. I think that's perfectly fine for the Grey Cup these days, it should be tremendous event!

I believe that they can add temporary seating on both the North and South end of BMO Field.

Obviously outdated now due to the Northern shift, but here was the original expanded seating plan.

no, the first 5 rows are unuseable for winter classics because all you can see is side of the boards.

Yeah, just saw the new virtual venue for TFC games, they couldn't do it. Too flat, not high enough or even much an incline.

that would probably be a bit too distracting.

Posted this in the Winter Classic thread, but could be useful here as well. Look likes the soccer set-up with expanded seats in the South and full temp grandstands in the North. Will be interesting to see how the configurations work out for the Grey Cup.

I think it will be similar but with fewer rows in the north end.

That's what I'm thinking. I know the image is just a concept, but I wonder what the capacity will be for each configuration.

Teams normally budget $100 per seat to rent and construct temporary grandstands at Grey Cups. If they can amortize the expenses over two events, then the cost per seat might be reduced to $65...with the $35 per seat (X2) going into profits. Constructing separate Grey Cup and Centennial Classic grandstands could total $100 per seat (X2) in expenses for the two events.

Another issue is the video replay screen/signage which is located right in the middle of the proposed North grandstand, perhaps they are constructing a new video screen? I'd have thought they'd build one huge 10,000-seat grandstand in the south endzone, with perhaps a much smaller 1,500-seater in the North. These grandstands would be used for both events, bringing total capacity to 36,500.

The Centennial artist's conception is definately the soccer configuration of some sort, as the endzone grandstands pictured are within the CFL endzone's.

I know its likely decided already ... but I hope they don't under estimate the interest in the GC this year. It should be a home game for an Ontario team... that has something to prove. I think if they price the tickets correctly...there should be fans of one of the Ontario teams looking for last minute tickets... would be a missed opportunity if they don't have near 40 000 tickets to me ....
