In addition to the prospects game, the 2016 edition, which kicks off on Tuesday, May 10, includes three days of practices, a combine for participating players, a CFL free-agent camp, as well as the traditional East-West Bowl banquet.“I’m looking forward to working with the finest coaches and student-athletes in Canadian university football,” said Blake Nill, the head coach of the reigning Vanier Cup champion UBC Thunderbirds who will be at the helm of the West team, marking his sixth all-time selection as sideline boss at the East-West Bowl.
“It’s an important part of showcasing our game and I’m positive this year’s edition of the East-West Bowl will live up to expectations and the high standards set by the event in previous years.”

The article below discusses the high quality of the players playing in East-West bowl on May 14th and some of the Canadians who have went on to substantial CFL or NFL careers.

For the most part, the East team is comprised of players from the AUS and RSEQ conferences as well as Carleton, Ottawa and Queen's, while the West contingent is made up of student-athletes from Canada West and the remaining OUA universities.

No less than 15 standouts who will take the field on May 14 have been named all-Canadians since the start of their CIS career. The list includes St. Francis Xavier's Dante Djan and Guelph's James Roberts who will quarterback the East prospects, while Manitoba's Theo Deezar and McMaster's Asher Hastings will be under centre for the West.

The East has won the last two East-West Bowl contests and five of the last six, including a 29-21 decision last May at Molson Stadium. However, the West still leads the all-time series 7-6.
NOTES: ... Of the 44 CIS players selected in the 2015 CFL Canadian Draft, 32 were past East-West Bowl participants, including all seven CIS standouts taken in the first round... Past East-West Bowl participants also include Hec Crighton Trophy winners Kyle Quinlan (McMaster), Billy Greene (UBC), Brad Sinopoli (Ottawa), Benoit Groulx (Laval), Daryl Stephenson (Windsor), Andy Fantuz (Western), Jesse Lumsden (McMaster) and Tommy Denison (Queen's), as well as current or former NFL players Stefan Charles (Regina), Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (McGill), David Foucault (Montreal), Jon Ryan (Regina), Dan Federkeil (Calgary), Samuel Giguère (Sherbrooke), Cory Greenwood (Concordia), Vaughn Martin (Western) and Henoc Muamba (StFX).

The rise of Carleton Ravens football, my old alma mater, from death in 1998 like the phoenix to be reborn in 2013 has remarkably placed 6 players in the East West Bowl.

The school will be back playing in the OUA in 2013, returning to Canadian university football after the program was cut following the 1998 season due to poor performances and a plan by Carleton’s athletic department to invest money in other sports.
    http://globalnews.ca/news/315191/ste...tball-program/

    EAST TEAM
Nate Behar, a 6-foot, 200-pound receiver, has led the Ravens in receiving yards and receptions in each of the past two seasons. In 2015, Behar was named a First Team All-Star while ranking sixth in receptions in the OUA with 39 while racking up 82.3 yards per game and 4 touchdowns. His strong play continued into the playoffs as he added 13 receptions for 196 yards and 1 TD in two games.
Kwabena Asare, a fourth-year offensive lineman, had an outstanding senior campaign for the Ravens, adding sheer size and depth to a massive o-line that only allowed 4 sacks on QB Jesse Mills during the regular season. The 6-foot-8, 270-pound brick wall made an impact late in the season as a starter in the final three games as well as the in the two playoff games.
Leon Cenerini, a defensive captain and team leader, has produced for the Ravens since Day 1 on the football field. In his 2013 rookie campaign, Cenerini finished the season with 69 tackles (63 solo, 12 assisted), 4 forced fumbles and 1 sack while being named to OUA All-Rookie Team. The native of La Salle, Manitoba added a team-high 61 tackles (49 solo, 24 assisted) and 7 tackles for loss in 2014. He continued to provide the team with stellar work in 2015, registering 39 tackles (29 solo, 20 assisted), including a team-high 5.6 tackles per game.
Nathaniel Hamlin, a defensive back, was named an OUA First Team All-Star for a second consecutive season in 2015, and his play in the Ravens secondary spoke volumes about his commitment to the team and his will to win. Hamlin had a team-high 42.5 tackles (37 solo, 11 assisted) as well as 1 sack and 3 pass breakups. His 129-yard missed field goal return for a touchdown against York on October 9th tied a CIS record, and one that he now shares with teammate Tunde Adeleke.
    WEST TEAM
Tunde Adeleke, one of the most electrifying players in the CIS, threatened opposing special teams units throughout 2015 with his prime time moves and dynamic mobility. Adeleke is a kick return specialist and punt returner for the Ravens, finished last season ranked 4th in the OUA with 1126 all-purpose yards. The speedy defensive back scored an 81-yard punt return against Waterloo in Week 2 followed by a 78-yard punt return for touchdown against Windsor in Week 3. In the last regular season game against Guelph, Adeleke had a combined 265 yards (all-purpose) on punt returns (6-122) and kick returns (6- 143) and 1 touchdown.
Stefano Napolitano, a third-year team captain and starting fullback, appeared in every game this season and provided the Carleton offence with a bruiser in its backfield who could help in pass protection as well assist as a lead blocker for running back Jahvari Bennett. The 6-foot-1 tank had a career-high 20 carries for 59 yards and 1 touchdown.

McMaster quarterback Asher Hastings found Alberta Golden Bears receiver Tylor Henry for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to lead the West to a 29-14 win in the 14th annual CIS East-West Bowl at McGill University’s Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, Saturday afternoon. ...
Henry, a 5-foot-11, 184-pound speedster from Camrose, Alta., was named offensive MVP for the winners thanks to his 123 yards and two scoring majors on six receptions. ...
UBC head coach Blake Nill was at the helm of the West squad, six months after guiding the Thunderbirds to their first Vanier Cup title since 1997 in his first season with the team. ...
For the East, offensive MVP honours went to Montreal Carabins running back Sean Thomas-Erlington, who finished with one touchdown and a team-high 93 yards on only nine carries -- including 73 yards in the first half. ...
Thomas-Erlington’s head coach with the Carabins, Danny Maciocia, was at the helm of the East for the second straight year. ...
Another Maciocia protégé, kicker Félix Ménard-Brière, got a golden opportunity to shine on Saturday as he was asked to handle kicking and punting duties for both sides due to an injury to Ottawa’s Lewis Ward, who was originally selected to the East roster. Ménard-Brière, who hails from Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Que., punted 18 times overall in the contest and was perfect on four field goal attempts, two for each team. ...
The East opened the scoring eight minutes and 25 seconds in on a 31-yard field goal by Ménard-Brière. The successful drive included a 20-yard run to the West 41 by Thomas-Erlington. The West went two-and-out on its next possession but immediately got the ball back thanks to an interception by UBC defensive back Kevin Wiens off of an errant pass from StFX’s Dante Djan. Seven plays later, on his second try from the one-yard line, Guelph running back Johnny Augustine punched the ball in to give the West a 7-3 lead with 1:27 remaining in the opening quarter. Ménard-Brière rounded out the first-quarter scoring on the ensuing kickoff with a 66-yard single for the West. ...
Back from the intermission, the West needed less than four minutes to take back the lead on a 33-yard TD pass from Hastings to Henry. Hastings completed four passes for 91 yards on the sequence, including a pair to Henry good for 50 yards. Ménard-Brière made it 16-12 for the West on the ensuing kickoff with a single but the East got two points back moments later thanks to a safety. The Hastings-Henry duo struck again on the final play of the third stanza to increase the West lead to 23-14. Hastings first connected with Saskatchewan’s Mitch Hillis for 38 yards to the East 18, and then found a wide open Henry in the end zone. The West pushed its advantage to 29-14 thanks to a pair of Ménard-Brière field goals in the first five minutes on the fourth quarter – from 32 and 15 yards out. The first came courtesy of a little trickery as the West opened the final frame with an onside kick, which they recovered at the East 17.

I caught a few bit of the game on CIS internet TV. And from looking at those Combine results = some pretty decent CFL draft prospects coming up for 2017

Some very good receivers - Behar (Carleton), Vandervoort (McMaster), Morrison (UBC) and Simonise (Calgary - selected to play in this game but unable to)

Some CIS all-star O-linemen: Schram (Calgary), Glaude (Montreal); i wonder why repeat CIS all-star OT Eddie Meredith (Western) was not in this game, as I believe he will be up next CFL draft ?

A couple of big DTs in Narkaj (Concordia - put up 36 bench reps !) & Luke (Montreal); and a guy who caught my eye was 2 time CanWest all-star DE Evan Foster (Manitoba) - had a sack and in on some tackles - looked quick, and put up 30 bench reps = very good for a smaller rush end type D-lineman

Impressed by the bit I saw of Mac QB Asher Hastings - to go with his superb CIS season last year (first as a full-time starter I believe) - 70+ % completion rate and broke the CIS TD pass record (too bad his birth certificate will most likely see him ignored by gobs)

CIS all-star DB Robert Woodson was in this game and posted a 4.52 forty and a 36" vertical

Some of the players from this showcase game will emerge as top CFL draft prospects; to go with some US college ball Canadians - like LB Jordan Herdman (SFU) who we have discussed here - already a 2 time Conference D player of the year and record setting tackler = he might be THE #1 2017 CFL draft prospect; but there are some NCAA products - like DT Elie Ankou - starting nose tackle for UCLA , or massive (6-9,336) O-lineman Mason Woods (Idaho) who should be on the CFL Prospects list as well.
