I think that says a lot about the lack of confidence Popp has in himself as a coach. He really should have just stayed as GM and made either Kavis Reed of Noel Thorpe the H/C this year.

I doubt Thorpe will be back next season.

Calvillo is remarkably poor as OC.

The only way Thorpe comes back is if he is promoted to head coach.

Gary Lawless reported on the Argo pregame show is that Popp won't be the HC after the bye week. Kavis Reed gave out the game balls last night apparently.

Later corrected by Lawless that it was taken out of context. Popp will remain HC. Reed gave him the gameball because of a personal issue he's been dealing with.

Popp stepping down as HC, staying as GM. Chapdelaine now head coach.

It makes sense that Chapdelaine was named head coach. The Montreal Canadiens would never hire a HC who could not speak French and the Alouettes should do the same.

Problem with that is that you are limiting yourself as to who you can hire, and may end up with an inferior candidate.

This would confirm Thorpe will be leaving at seasons end, I would think. I can see him taking over from Benevides in Edmonton.

Agreed, but he has a lot of team leader type vets on that team, which is very helpful. There was a time when Gary Etcheverry was considered a great DC, but sometimes a change of scenery isn't always for the better.

It would not surprise me if Wettenhall cleans house for next year.
From Popp as the remaining GM to the new HC with a new staff.
Maybe keeping AC as either the OC or QB coach.

Being able to speak French, English, Spanish, Chinese, etc. does not make one a good football coach.

The Als have said that Chapdelaine is only interim at this point and that he and the coordinators, including Thorpe, will be encouraged to apply for the full-time position at the end of this season.

Indeed, it's not enough to be a linguist - a cunning linguist is required for the head coaching position.

I am not a proponent of someone having to speak French to get a job in pro sports, but in Quebec it matters. You can bet if Jacques has any success this year, he will be named head coach next year. Huge win from a public relations standpoint, and the Als need it.
