Argonauts, Tiger-Cats hyped about season opener at BMO Field

    It's already started.

The hype is already starting to build for the CFL season opener at BMO Field, and it's still more than two months away.Members of the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats who took part in this week's CFL media sessions got the talk going early -- especially players like defensive tackle Bryan Hall, who went from the Tabbies to the Boatmen via free agency in February.
“There's been a lot of chirping, especially with the Ticat guys,” Hall said. “I saw Speedy (Brandon Banks) down there. I told him he's washed up. I saw (Luke) Tasker. I told him he'd never be Steve. Zach (Collaros), you know, he won't be back this year. Simoni (Lawrence), I never liked him. I could go on and on.”
The Ticats didn't offer Hall a new contract, so he simply added that rejection to the list of negative moments in his life that motivate him to play well. Football players commonly refer to it as having a chip on their shoulder.
“I got a whole bag. Family sized. All dressed,” Hall said. “They just keep stacking. I have a (boat)load of chips.”
Asked if they get heavy, Hall responded: “Naw. That's what I hit with, my shoulder. They're going to feel all those chips June 23rd. You can believe that.” ...
Sources say the Argos didn't offer a contract to Owens, the CFL's most outstanding player in 2012, so you can bet he'll be fired up to play at BMO on opening night as well. One player who would love to be on the field opening night is Ticats quarterback Zach Collaros.
The only catch is he might not be able to play.
Collaros was well on his way to being named the CFL's most outstanding player last season when he tore his ACL in late September. Collaros reported Wednesday his rehab is going well but admitted there is some doubt surrounding his status for training camp and the opener.
“I'll be involved in everything, and after practice I'll do what I have to do to be ready to go when I get the opportunity,” Collaros said, “but I'm trying to not even think about that because it just kind of pisses me off.
“Especially when we play Toronto the first week. Like, dang. Come on. Like, they couldn't hold that for four weeks?”

Collaros totally rubs me the wrong way.
It seems everything is about him.
I hope he renews with the Ti-Cats when his contract expires. It is easy to hate him along with his team at the same time.

Another potential Argo Tiger-Can'ts area of friction comes with the Cats signing of receiver Anthony McClung, who was signed by the Argos last year but cut in May but is now in Hamilton. McClung who played a couple of years with Collaros for the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Former Cincinnati quarterback Zach Collaros has been a staple of the Tiger-Cats organization for the past couple years, putting up some impressive numbers in the process. Now, he has a familiar face to throw to in former Cincinnati receiver Anthony McClung. ...
Collaros and McClung had a couple seasons in Clifton where they played together, with Collaros playing for the Bearcats from 2008 to 2011. McClung was at Cincinnati for four seasons from 2010 to 2013, where he registered 177 catches for 2,378 yards and 15 touchdowns. McClung attended training camp in 2014 with the Houston Texans before latching on in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts in 2015.

I know that in today's day of age you can listen to an interview from another market quite easily but if this indeed the case then it is mildly disappointing that he's being interviewed by a TSN affiliate in another market before he's even been on 1050.

I do apologize if he has been on 1050 already.

Post grey cup there are 5 radio segments in the last 5 months on 1050. That's an average of 1 per month from the part owner and host broadcaster. Awesome. C'mon 1050 get in the game.

I think the prevailing thought is with the Argos moving to BMO and playing real home games in a venue better suited to the team there can be a rebirth of sorts. Why wouldn't the teams new owner and host broadcaster not want to front run this season with a better effort. This is not even a plan by TSN. That is a piss poor effort of sports coverage. They can't even be accused of homerism or using their ownership as an advantage. It makes me shake my head in frustration. In the words of Mickey the trainer in Rocky II, what are we waiting for?

Maybe we would have greater than 7,000 season ticket holders if the host broadcaster gave the team better than token coverage.

With all the industry talk of "leveraging platforms" and "synergy" it really does seem like a no-brainer to have more Argos talk on 1050. Right now I just play radio roulette on the way home between the sports channels. If I knew 1050 was more likely to talk CFL and the Argos, I wouldn't skip around as much.

I get the Argos being the orphan of the other media, but why TSN does so little to develop their own CFL Argo product in the media capital of Canada is beyond puzzling.

Austin has made it official that Collaros will miss the season opener against the Argos.

The long road to recovery for Hamilton Tiger-Cats star quarterback Zach Collaros continues and will likely do so into the start of the regular season.
Tiger-Cats head coach Kent Austin confirmed Wednesday afternoon that his young pivot will be limited in training camp and will be unavailable to start the regular season.
Austin held a media teleconference to provide updates to all things related to the football club and when asked about whether Collaros will fully participate in camp or not, he responded by saying:
“He will not be able to participate in training camp. He will be going through his normal rehabilitation protocol so if you mean ‘will he be ready for the season coming out of training camp?’, the answer is no.”
Despite the fact that the Ticats will enter the season with their starter on the bench, Austin is encouraged by Collaros’ rehabilitation so far.
“Zach is doing as you can imagine, amazing well,” the Tigertown head coach said. “He has the DNA to not only follow instructions but push the envelope without overdoing it. He is healing well and the prospects for him moving forward are excellent.”

Not a surprise. IIRC I read a recent interview where Mr. Glass said that he expects to miss the first 4 games.
