At the same time that they released Adarius Bowman they announced that former Argo Vidal Hazelton got an one year extension. No surprise on cutting Bowman as his contract entitled him to a $140,000 bonus today on a contract that worked out to $265,000 for the year.

Edmonton 10 players on their released negotiation list include:

    1. QB – Shane Buechele – Texas
    2. QB – Case Cookus – Northern Arizona
    3. DB – Will Davis – Utah State
    4. OL – Josh James – Carroll College
    5. RB – Phillip Lindsay – Colorado
    6. WR -Jerry Louie-McGee – Montana
    7. WR – Steven Mitchell Jr. – USC
    8. DE – Zach Wagenmann – Montana
    9. QB – Manny Wilkins – Arizona State
    10. WR – Shane Zylstra – Minnesota State
    https://www.esks.com/2018/02/20/eski...ames-neg-list/

Shane Zylstra, Brandon's brother, is the most prominent name on the Eskimo list.

Shane Zylstra WR, Minnesota State University, 6-4, 215 pounds
If Edmonton fans never see Brandon Zylstra in the CFL again, they can take solace in the fact that another Zylstra of a very similar build could be in the wings for them. As a sophomore, Shane Zylstra was the Div II Mavericks’ top receiver last year, with 51 catches for 861 yards and 15 touchdowns.
While in Edmonton last fall, older brother Brandon told Postmedia’s Gerry Moddejonge that Shane is his twin. Shane had a 204-yard game against Minnesota Duluth on Sept. 16 and a 147-yard game on Oct. 7 vs. Augustana. Watching his brother excel in two quick seasons in Edmonton, Shane says he’s already learned a lot about the CFL.

Mike Reilly discusses the Eskimos' mini-camp, which he considers their best ever, below.

“I think it was a combination of things, where we had our entire team there,” Reilly, the league’s reigning Most Outstanding Player, said on the phone from his home in Seattle.
“The other mini-camps that I’d been a part of it was usually the quarterbacks are the only veterans and the rest are free-agent guys.
“For us at this camp it was basically like training camp. We showed up, we had a couple hours of install the first night and we hit the ground running on the field and the guys were going full-speed because they’d been in the system already and knew what was expected. That was part of what I felt was great about camp, was that it was really just an extension of training camp.”
The other half of the best-mini-camp-ever equation ties into the biggest questions that surround the Esks as they head into their actual training camp on May 20.
“I think the part that made me really happy about how the mini-camp played out was that our team has gone through a bit of transition,” Reilly said. “We’ve gotten a lot younger in certain areas of our team, which is necessary if you want to continue to be a championship-calibre team, but you never really know for certain how that’s going to pan out until those young guys get out there and play.” ...

“I felt like the guys that were now slotted in as starters that previously in their careers, because of their youth, were backups and don’t have a lot of experience, they came in and you wouldn’t have been able to tell that this was their first time lining up as a starter. They really played as if they were veterans and I think that bodes really well for what our team will be able to accomplish this year.” ...

“When you have a guy like Odell or Adarius, you lose more than just their on-field production when they’re no longer with your team,” Reilly said. “You lose that locker room presence, that energy. Those are guys that their particular position groups have looked to them to follow their lead and they did a great job for us, obviously. You have to make sure you can replace all of the intangibles that they brought to the team.” ...

“I think our receiving crew is the strongest that I’ve seen it since I’ve been here, in the sense of all the way across the board. Every time that we lined up against the first group, all five guys at the wide receiver position are a weapon that we can use at any point in time. There’s really no weak link and I think that’s kind of going to be our M.O. We’re going to be distributing the ball pretty evenly across the board and that’s exciting for our guys. The only way that’s possible is if they’re all comfortable and ready to go out and perform every route in our playbook and they are.”

National 34 year old OL Simeon Rottier has decided to retire after six years with the Eskimos, following three years with the Tiger Cats, because his rehabilitation from several injuries from last year was going slowly.

With the release of three veteran RBs (John White, Travon Van and Ladarius Perkins) during the off-season and early TC, the Eskimos will have a new look running game. New RBs Shaq Cooper and Jordan Robinson both scored in Edmonton's victory over the Riders on Sunday, and confirmed for Jason Maas what he saw from them in practices.

To date, 51,000 tickets have been purchased by fans for this year's game at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, which leaves just 4,819 seats remaining for the big game on November 25.
While they may not break the previous 6 day record; those are still very strong numbers so far.

I'm surprised about Thompson and Lochard. Also surprised Lochard is listed as a fullback.

GM Brock Sunderland says DB Brandyn Thompson was cut because his injury now looks like it is going to cost him a lot more games than was originally anticipated.

    Practice Roster

    National offensive lineman Kwabena Asare
    International running back Shaquille Cooper
    National fullback Tanner Green
    International quarterback Zach Kline
    National fullback Pascal Lochard
    International offensive lineman Andrew Peterson

Woods on the PR; maybe we should try to pick him up lol. Esks would probably just add him to the active roster though.

He had to go back home to deal with a personal manner. He made the team aware of it, so it's not like he just up and left.

IMO Woods is a project, similar to where Sackey was after Year 1. He might develop into a good player but he also might become a Mark Moroz or Matt Sewell -- great size but no stomach for playing. His body language last year on the sideline was not indicative of a guy who was determined to become a contributor. He hung back and did not seem to talk to any of his fellow linemen.

Judging by what happened up until the storm stopped the season opener, Mike Reilly seems to be at last season's level already.

The Eskimos have added 44 year old Pro Football Hall of Famer WR Terrell Owens, who hasn't played since 2010, and 23 year old QB Christian Hackenberg, a 2016 second round New York Jet draft choice who was also released by Oakland and New England, to their negotiation list. Eskimo GM Brock Sunderland has ties with the Jets as he was a scout tor them from 2007 to 2012. Signing Owens seems to be a PR play.

Derel Walker wants to lead the league in reception yardage as teammates Adarius Bowman did in 2016 (Walker finished with 1,589 yards) and Brandon Zylstra did in 2017.

“It’s my goal to be that guy,” he said. ...

Three seasons ago, Walker spent the front end of his rookie season on the practice roster. When he finally graduated to the lineup, he lit up the league, catching 89 passes for 1,110 yards to win the CFL Award as Most Outstanding Rookie and winning a Grey Cup ring. ...

With 38 career CFL games, Walker went into this season with 246 receptions and 3,333 yards.
That’s an impressive average of 87.7 yards per game.
“It’s all because of Mike Reilly. He’s just a great quarterback, man. I can’t take too much of the credit.”
As Reilly’s go-to guy, the sky is the limit for ‘Sky’ Walker.
“If it all comes down to it being on my shoulders, I’m fine with that. If they pick me to be that guy, great,” he said of the go-to status.

Edmonton has signed National WR Sam Guiguere, who the Als released in January after making only 11 catches last year. The fact no one signed him until tells you how much teams think of his skills at this point in his career.
