Not sure if it is more the HC or GM who is responsible in each case. Barker singed some proven NI starters (Bourke & Bulcke) this off-season; Desjardins signed Gascon-Nadon as a NI starter FA. GMs might have a lot of say in drafting strategy too - both teams have a good number of draft picks starting/playing for them. The coaches might have to have more faith/confidence in their NI talent to deploy start more than the minimum 7 that some teams pre-determine is only needed. Ottawa has a number of Canadian coaches; Argos do not.

Good moves IMO. Thompson can play, and IMO Belue has been absolutely terrible - even that's probably putting it mildly.

Can't for the life of me figure out how Hervey & Maas continue to trot out that rookie import guy (name escapes me now) as their main return guy game after game - shown he is next to useless, but keeps getting to play ???

Thompson should help their D-backfield, and getting Ojo back sure would help (not sure of his status?)

Ojo ruptured his Achilles, so he's out for the season.

I'd rather go with young players, but, as the defending champs, they probably think Vega gives them a better chance to make a playoff run.

While QB James Franklin is not a free agent in 2017, there continues to be speculation that he may be traded.

James Franklin continues to be a hot topic heading into this year’s off-season (David Chidley/CFL.ca)

This is the move that seems inevitable to some and extremely unlike to others. It depends on how you analyze the Edmonton quarterback position. If you think the team is all-in with Mike Reilly, you’re likely thinking Franklin will bring in so much that GM Ed Hervey has to pull the trigger.
If you’re thinking the Eskimos view Franklin as the future and their next guy, you may believe there is a better chance they move on from Reilly before they’d move away from James Franklin.
But there could be many fits. Montreal, as stated above, is trying to augment the QB spot. Drew Willy isn’t the guaranteed guy in Toronto and of course Saskatchewan has been rumoured to have made a few calls about the young quarterback since Jones took over.
One problem: As stated, who is saying Edmonton actually has any interest in letting him go?

The Eskimos gave LB Deon Lacey, who had a very good season, early release to pursue his NFL dreams.

The Edmonton Eskimos have released international linebacker Deon Lacey to pursue NFL opportunities.
The move was announced Tuesday as Lacey, who was previously a pending free agent on Feb. 14, is allowed to venture south early.
A three-year veteran, Lacey contributed to the Eskimos’ Grey Cup Championship in 2015 before becoming a full-time starting linebacker last season. The 26-year-old chipped in with 87 defensive tackles and 16 on special teams along with three interceptions, a touchdown and a sack.
The 6-foot-2, 229-pound linebacker has played in all 18 games in each of his three professional seasons.

Good riddance to Lacey as he annoyed the crap out of me with his antics of intimidation.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed SB Derel Walker after his early release by Edmonton.

The Edmonton Eskimos granted star slotback Derel Walker his release as he pursues a potential contract in the NFL. First reported by ESPN’s Jenna Laine, Walker has signed a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs have since confirmed the signing.
Walker was scheduled to become a free agent on February 14th.
In just two seasons Walker established himself as one of the most dominant pass-catchers in the league, posting back-to-bak all-star campaigns with 1,000-yards plus. He was also an integral part of helping the Eskimos capture the 103rd Grey Cup presented by Shaw in his rookie season.

Former Argo Vidal Hazelton has resigned with the Eskimos. Last year he did not play in a game after signing with Edmonton, so its possible that he won't make the team in 2017.

The six-foot-three, 212-pound Cincinnati product will have a chance to compete for a spot in training camp alongside up-and-comers Brandon Zylstra and Bryant Mitchell to see who will become the new No. 2 behind 2016’s league-leading receiver Adarius Bowman.
“I’m just happy to be an Eskimo, I’m happy to be here,” Hazelton said upon his arrival to Commonwealth Stadium for his first practice on Oct. 18. “The guys have given me a warm welcome so I’m really excited. ...

One that won’t come until training camp opens at the end of May, as it turns out, considering the 28-year-old didn’t dress for a single down with the Eskimos.
In eight games with the Argos, Hazelton had 361 yards and three touchdowns on 27 catches before coming to Edmonton, where he became the first Eskimos player on offence to wear the No. 15 since quarterback Ricky Ray was traded to Toronto. ...
The 2017 season will represent another fresh start for Hazelton, who didn’t delve into the circumstances surrounding his release by Toronto, which coincided with that of fellow American receivers Kevin Elliott, Tori Gurley and Phil Bates, after Argos head coach Scott Milanovich publicly questioned the commitment level of his players before saying changes were coming.

I think the signing of Hazelton last year had a large part to do with the expected departure of Derel Walker to the NFL. Esks have been very pleased with the late season performance of Brandon Zylstra and the PR prospects of Bryant Mitchell, but believe that Hazelton can return to his rookie form next season. My personal opinion is that Hazelton will be a starter on the depth chart week one.

There is also no evidence that the Eskimos are ready to trade Franklin to the Riders.

Many have speculated that Jones could acquire Franklin to start for the Riders in 2016. CHED‘s Dave Campbell, however, who covers the Eskimos closely, says it’s not likely in the cards.
“Franklin is going to be very hard to sign and very hard to trade,” Campbell tweeted on Wednesday. “Best bet is nothing happens unless Jones pays the high price for him.”
