As usual Canada takes the difficult route into the playoffs by losing to Finland today 4-0.

After 16 straight wins at the World Hockey Championships, Canada lost a game. The 4-0 shutout loss came at the hands of Finland, who are now the only undefeated team in the tournament at 7-0. ...
It wasn’t as bad as the scoreboard suggests, as Canada actually outshot Finland 21-19 in the game, but couldn’t get one past 27-year-old netminder Mikko Koskinen. In the other crease, it was a forgettable start for Edmonton Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot, who allowed four goals on just 19 shots. ...Canada will put this game behind them and now turn their attention to their quarterfinal matchup against Sweden. Sweden finished third in Group A with a 3-2-0-2 record. You can catch that game Thursday morning at 10:15 a.m. on TSN.

Canada gets a chance for revenge against Finland in the IIHF finals after losing to the Finnish in the round robin part of the tournment.

Canada reached a world championship final against Finland by beating the United States 4-3 thanks to Ryan Ellis' goal early in the third period of a pulsating match on Saturday. The Finns won 3-1 as they overcame hosts Russia in the other semi-final just as they did at the Sochi Olympics two years ago.Bill Peters' Canada side got off to a fine start as they moved into a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period following goals from Brendan Gallagherand Brad Marchand.
But they were stunned when the Americans turned the match around inside seven second-period minutes as Auston Matthews scored on the powerplay before goals from David Warsofsky and Tyler Motte put the U.S. 3-2 in front. Canada went into the final period level, though, after Derick Brassard scored on the powerplay.
The defending champions took the lead through Ellis' fierce slapshot early in the third period and never looked back as they moved into the showpiece match.

The next generation of top Canadian defensemen are mostly on display in the world championships.

The next generation of Canadian defensemen.
That’s what they’re saying about the crop of defenders that have come out of the 2012 NHL Draft, and six of those are currently playing for Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship in Russia.
Five of them were first rounders – Ryan Murray went second to the Columbus Blue Jackets, Morgan Rielly fifth to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Matt Dumba seventh to the Minnesota Wild, Cody Ceci 15th to the Ottawa Senators, and Michael Matheson 23rd to the Florida Panthers. Add to that group Ben Hutton, who was a fifth round pick, 147th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks that same year, and you have six of the seven defenseman that were on the Canadian roster at the start of the tournament – of which none has seen his 23rd birthday yet.

Connor McDavid scores the winner for Canada in a 2-0 game which was followed by an empty net goal by Matt Duchene. McDavid, at 19, becomes the youngest player to ever win the Under 18, World Juniors, and IIHF World Championships.
