The Tiger Cat defence regressed since mid-September. All six games in which the team gave up 30 points or more occurred since then. So did four of the five games in which the defence gave up 400+ yards. In four of the last five games, including the playoffs, Hamilton gave up at least 30 points. The secondary was burned much more often during this period than in the first three months of the year.

Commissioner Ambrosie says now that the litigation involving Tim Horton's Field has been resolved, the league plans to hold a Grey Cup in Hamilton soon; but, the city, which hasn't hosted one since 1996, will have to win the bidding process first. I think Argo fans would feel a extra special sense of satisfaction winning another Grey Cup in Hamilton. It would almost be as good as winning one in Toronto.

How many seats could THF add for a Grey Cup? 10,000 ? 15,000 ?

The South Endzone zone can be easily scaffolded to a grand scale. North, not so much. 10000 easy, not sure about 15000. 35-40000 would be sufficient for an Eastern Grey Cup.

Hamilton has a decision to make regarding whether they will about whether they are going to try to retain Orlondo Steinauer because the Argos and Lions appear to be looking at trying to sign him.

Hunting season, CFL-coaching version, has begun and Orlondo Steinauer is clearly among the preferred prey. ...

The Ticats’ current assistant head coach, and former player and defensive co-ordinator, is squarely in the sights of the Toronto Argonauts and likely also the B.C. Lions — the only CFL teams with head coaching vacancies — to interview for their lead job.
But, it says here, despite a passel of impactful and sometimes contradictory concepts, Steinauer’s place has to be in Hamilton. Long-term. Just 45 years old, he’s a keeper: experienced with enormous new-age upside and he could be a constant thread in football operations here for the next decade. ...

You don’t want to have to choose between June Jones, who has significantly coached up many key players and shifted the mood metre clearly to the positive, and the still-rising promise of Steinauer. But that’s where the Ticats may find themselves. And soon. ...

When Steinauer returned to the Ticats nine months ago, leaving a good position at Fresno State with indications of even brighter things to come, he spoke of complementing his impressive defensive resume with offence learned under Jones.
But you can assume there were also private talks about him taking over the program when Jones’ three-year deal expires in 2020. Succession plans are a key part of most of the best organizations — Calgary is Exhibit A — and this looked like that kind of plan.
But as mentioned here before, all timing changed when the Argos fired Marc Trestman less than a year removed from his Grey Cup victory, which neither the Ticats nor Steinauer could have anticipated last off-season. The Argo upheaval pushed the metronome to “really fast.”

Steinauer, who was unavailable for comment, has spent more combined time as a player and coach with the Argos than the Ticats and he could switch teams without switching homes. But Hamilton is where Steinauer won his first two Grey Cups as a player and where he was hired for his only full pro seasons as a defensive co-ordinator, before he went to Fresno for its turnaround 2017 season.
Mitchell told The Spectator on that “June Jones is returning” but did not want to comment any further on anything to do with Steinauer or the rest of coaching staff.
Jones says he wants and plans to be back and on locker-cleanout day added, “I think everybody wants to come back. Orlondo and I have had a conversation about his situation. Any time a guy has an opportunity, I’m happy for them.”

Orlondo Steinauer is taking over as HC while June Jones switches to OC. I'm glad to see Orlondo get the chance.

The Tiger Cats have resigned five players: Internationals DT Bobby Richardson and OL Isame Faciane, who was in Argos TC in 2018, and Nationals DB Nicholas Parisotto, LB Dillon Grondin, and WR Mitch O'Connor.

Richardson, 26, played nine regular season games with the Tiger-Cats in 2018, recording six defensive tackles and two special teams tackles. Prior to playing in the Canadian Football League, Richardson spent time with the National Football League’s New York Giants (2017), Denver Broncos (2017), Kansas City Chiefs (2016), Washington Redskins (2016) and New Orleans Saints (2015-16), appearing in 15 games with 11 starts on the defensive line for the Saints in 2015, posting 40 combined tackles, a split sack, one interception and one pass knockdown. ...

Faciane, 27, played and started one regular season game at right tackle with the Tiger-Cats in 2018. He also attended training camp with the Toronto Argonauts last season. The 6-4, 310-pound native of Slidell, Florida, previously spent time with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins (2017), Buffalo Bills (2016) and Minnesota Vikings (2014-16). He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Vikings in 2014 and spent three seasons on the team’s practice roster where he converted from a defensive lineman to an offensive lineman. ...

Parisotto, 23, played eight regular season games with the Tiger-Cats in 2018, recording three special teams tackles. Prior to turning pro, Parisotto played 30 games for the University of Guelph from 2014 to 2017. The 5-10, 199-pound Guelph, Ontario native registered 114 tackles and nine interceptions over his four seasons with the Gryphons. He was selected by the Tiger-Cats in the eighth round, 66th overall, in the 2018 CFL Draft.

Grondin, 26, played one regular season game with the Tiger-Cats in 2018. Over three CFL seasons with the Tiger-Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders (2016-18), Grondin has played 16 regular season games, recording one defensive tackle and six special teams tackles. Before turning pro, the 6-1, 220-pound native of Sarnia, Ontario played five seasons with the Windsor AKO Fratmen in the Canadian Junior Football League.

O’Connor, 24, attended training camp with the Tiger-Cats and had two stints on the club’s practice roster in 2018. The 6-2, 195-pound native of Kingston, Ontario played in 27 career games with McMaster University from 2014 to 2017, registering 54 receptions for 734 yards and three touchdowns for the Marauders. O’Connor was a member of McMaster’s 2014 Yates Cup (OUA Championship) and Mitchell Bowl-winning team and also appeared in the U SPORTS East-West Bowl in 2017.

With Jerry Glanville leaving of his own accord, Steinauer may end up as HC and DC, although he would prefer to have separate coordinators for the offence, defence and special teams, leaving Steinauer to focus on the overall picture. Possible DCs that have been mentioned include the Lions DC Mark Washington, Mike Benevides who was released by Edmonton, and assistant coaches Craig Butler, James Stanley, Jordan Younger and Barron Miles as possible choices.

Hamilton has signed four National players: WR Marcus Davis, LB Lucas Korol, DB Gabriel Ouellet, and kicker Michael Domagala.

Davis, 22, was selected by the Tiger-Cats in the fourth round, 31st overall, in the 2018 CFL Draft. The 5-10, 185-pound wide receiver from Victoria, British Columbia registered 103 receptions for 1,316 yards and 10 touchdowns in 30 games over four years (2014-17) with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds before sitting out the 2018 season to rehab a knee injury. Davis, the younger brother of current Tiger-Cats linebacker Terrell Davis, won the Hardy Cup, Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup with UBC in 2015.

Korol, 23, played eight games for the University of Guelph in 2018, and was named a U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian after recording 74.5 total tackles, three sacks, 8.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, one interception and five pass break-ups for the Gryphons. In 34 career games at Guelph, the 6-0, 205-pound native of Dundas, Ontario registered 224 total tackles, eight sacks, 18.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries, four interceptions and six pass break-ups.

Ouellet, 24, played six games for Laval University in 2018, recording seven total tackles, two interceptions and two pass break-ups for the Rouge et Or. In 38 career games at Laval from 2014 to 2018, the 5-10, 198-pound native of Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec registered 83.5 total tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, eight interceptions, nine pass break-ups and one forced fumble. He was part of Laval’s 2016 and 2018 Vanier Cup championship teams.

Domagala, 23, played eight games for Carleton University in 2018, converting 16 of 21 field goal attempts and all 26 extra point attempts, and recording 63 punts for an average of 40.1 yards per punt for the Ravens. In 42 career games at Carleton from 2013-18, the 5-9, 202-pound native of St. Catharines, Ontario converted 73 of 96 field goal attempts and all 132 extra point attempts, and registered 347 punts for an average of 38.8 yards per punt.

Hamilton will see some significant changes in its 2019 schedule compared to the last few years. As per usual, the following commentary comes with a negative comment on the negative relationship between Argos and Tiger Cats.

When the Ticats welcome the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday, June 13, it will not only be the first game of the 2019 CFL schedule, it will be the first time Hamilton has opened the regular season at home since the farewell year at Ivor Wynne Stadium. ...

For the first time since 2010, the Ticats will play three of their opening four games against the traditionally weaker Eastern Division. After hosting Saskatchewan, they're in Toronto, then split a home-and-home series against Montreal. In 2018, the Ticats were a combined 4-1 against the Argos and Alouettes.
Last year, all of the Ticats' first five games were against the traditionally stronger west and six times in the last eight years, they've played at least three of their first four against western opponents, partly explaining their long history of generally weak starts to kick off the season.

The season's second beginning, meaning Labour Day, has also been altered, with the kickoff for the Monday classic reverting to 1 p.m. from the 6:30 p.m. starts of the past three years.
"For a certain segment of our fan base, moving the Labour Day Classic back to 1 p.m. is a very important thing," Ticats president Matt Afinec says, while also pointing out that Tim Hortons Field's biggest crowd was for the 2016 prime-time Labour Day Monday against Toronto. Still, it says here, it's imperative that kids who have to start school the next day can still get to the Labour Day game, if only to learn the proper cadence and application of "Argos Suck!" ...

Labour Day will be the Ticats' sixth 2019 home game before school begins, opening a huge marketing door for grooming the next generation of fans.
But the cloudy side of that sunny street is that after playing the Argos on Sept. 2, the Ticats go into a bye week, followed by three successive weekends in the west: at Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg. ...

The two other "signature" home games have essentially swapped calendar positions from 2018 to 2019 with the Hall of Fame Game moving from the autumn to the Aug. 10 visit by the B.C. Lions and the Wall of Honour Game moving to the fall from last August's Joe Montford induction. It's not yet been decided which of the Ticats' three post-Labour Day games that will be.
