Hamilton may end up getting a Canadian player under unusual circumstances: National DL Nathan Shepherd, who played at Fort Hays State University in Kansas and has been invited to the Senior Bowl. He is on their negotiation list and not a draftee because, after playing for SFU in 2012 he quit playing football and as a result went undrafted in the 2015 CFL draft. However, he had started playing football again at Fort Hays in 2015. Because he had already been through the CFL draft, the Cats were then able to put him on their negotiation list in December.

The Ajax, Ontario native heads to the Senior Bowl as an intriguing small school player. He made 38 tackles, 12.5 for loss and four sacks, earning him Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Defensive Player of the Year and NCAA Division III All-American honours. He was a key piece on the Tigers team that went 11-0 and won its first MIAA Championship.
The six-foot-five, 300-pound defender ultimately played three seasons at Fort Hays State making 167 tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. During nine games with Simon Fraser in 2012, Shepherd made 20 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and one interception.

Assuming Shepherd was 18 in 2012 when he started at SFU, he would be 24 this year. Will he garner NFL interest?

It depends on several factors. Coming from a Division II school, such as Fort Hays University, always raises questions about how he will do against stronger competition. Playing in the Senior Bowl answers some of those questions and therefore his performance there and in the week long practices are important to scouts.
His testing in the NFL Combine will also give some further evidence one way or the other. Since he quit the SFU program in 2012, teams will also want to investigate why he did that - were there any red flags related to things such as drugs, bad behaviour etc. related to his departure?
At his current age of 24 (according to his biography) he is older than the usual university senior. How related is his better performance at the university level related to greater physical maturity?
If the answers come back mostly positive, he should draw some NFL interest as many CFLers who go on to the NFL are even older than that. On the other hand, Hamilton is losing little in putting him on their negotiation list as its almost like getting a free draft choice.
His senior year biography suggests it was not an coincidence that he made it to the Senior Bowl.

Named to All-America First Team on the defensive line by the AFCA and D2Football.com…All-America Second Team selection by the Associated Press…Named to D2CCA All-Super Region 3 First Team…MIAA Defensive Player of the Year…Tied for the most votes among Division II finalists for the Cliff Harris Award, given to the nation’s top small college defensive player from NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA combined…Invited to compete in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl and Reese’s Senior Bowl…Finished the year with 38 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks…Produced a season-high seven tackles against Central Missouri (9/7/17)…Had a season-best three tackles for loss in the win that clinched the MIAA title for FHSU at Northwest Missouri State (11/4/17)…Produced tackles for loss in nine of 11 games.

The Hamilton Spectator has written an editorial expressing deep doubts about bringing Manziel to the city. After last year's hiring and quick firing of coach Art Briles following his previous avoiding dealing with player sexual assault scandals at Baylor University, the Tiger Cats hardly need more off-field problems turning off Hamiltonians.

The latest instalment features the controversial quarterback, who's negotiation rights are owned by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, rapping the lyrics from convicted domestic abuser Chris Brown while rocking his soon-to-be released "Comeback SZN" hoodies.

Manziel also appears to be back to his late-night ways. The two short videos were posted to his Instagram story early Thursday morning and feature Manziel singing along with two Brown songs in what appears to be a limo.
The optics of this are awful. Brown was convicted of assaulting then-girlfriend and fellow pop star Rhianna in 2009 and has since had numerous brushes with the law, many of them involving altercations with women.
The second clip features Manziel rapping the song "No Exit" from Brown's "Heartbreak on a Full Moon" album. "There really ain't no exit for me. So don't be worried by my ex-chick, I know that you heard them stories..."
Add the hawking of the hoodies, the late-night posts, the limo ride and the outrageous contract demands made by his agent last week and it hardly inspires confidence that Manziel sees the Comeback SZN as some kind of redemption effort.
Manziel was largely absent from social media during his period of football exile and he was dead silent as the CFL conducted a review while mulling his entry into the league. He went eight months without posting to his Instagram account and tweeted sparingly (and innocuously.) ...

But he returned with a vengeance in early January, shortly after the CFL ruled it would allow him into the league.
His first post thanked his girlfriend. His second unleashed the #ComebackSZN hashtag while also chirping his former NFL team, the Cleveland Browns, for their winless 2017 season.
What's been largely absent for Manziel's social media presence is anything indicating that he's interested in, you know, football.
The Twitter and Instagram accounts of many professional athletes — including CFL stars and Ticats — are filled with workout videos, references to the grind and statements about their love for the game.
Not particularly original, most of it, but a fair representation of their daily lives and commitment to their craft.
Manziel's tone-deaf social media posts, coupled with agent's contract demands, are rapidly eroding whatever goodwill and open-mindedness that surrounded his potential arrival in Hamilton.

The Tiger Cats are trying to broaden their fan base by selling flex packs for as low as $25.

GM Eric Tillman and VP of Football Operations Kent Austin continue to pursue Manziel despite all the recent major red flags, even at the risk of alienating some fans, just as the hiring of coach Art Briles last year, who had covered up sexual abuse among players at Baylor University, did.

Ticats general manager Eric Tillman believes the deadline set by Johnny Manziel and his agent isn’t a hard one.
“A lot of stuff happens in the negotiation process,” Tillman told Alex Marvez and co-hosts Rick Neuheisel and Mark Dominik on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “We have a lot of respect for Erik [Burkhardt]. Our meetings with Johnny have been good.”
“We’ll be patient. I know the deadline is there but will be fluid. There’s a lot of time between now and the beginning of camp (in May).”
On Jan. 8, Burkhardt released a statement that said in part: “due to Johnny’s strong relationship with coach [June] Jones and Hamilton executive Kent Austin, we’ve made the decision to deal exclusively with Hamilton and give them until January 31st to work out a fair deal to make him their quarterback.”

If DL Nathan Shepherd, who has been ranked the #2 top performer at this week's Senior Bowl practices, doesn't end up in the NFL long-term, Hamilton may be getting a very valuable National without using up a draft choice. As mentioned above he originally played for SFU in 2012, dropped out after one year, therefore went underrated in 2015, allowing the Tiger Cats to put him on their negotiation list at the end of 2017 after playing at Fort Hays and making the Senior Bowl roster.

Very interestin';; sounds like this Shepherd guy would have been a top 20 type CFL draft prospect; but the Ticats get to scoop him for free / without using a draft pick by putting him on their neg list = smart move, by whoever tracked this guy. Up for Div II defensive player of the year = pretty impressive (but so was Jordan Herdman i believe and he fell way down in the CFL draft).

He might well get an NFL look after impressing at such a high profile event as the Senior Bowl; but he doesn't make it there and wants to play pro in the CFL - he's from Ontario - he might show up for the Ticats and be an impact player. Ted Laurent is a free agent upcoming - he might sign with another team - but he is also getting on in age & mileage.

Tough break for Shepherd, literally, as he broke one of his hands in practice and missed the Game. Probably showed enough though that he will be in a NFL camp this summer for a long look. Good to see someone finally get there having to do it the hard way.

What seems to be the case with these all-star events is that the practices leading to the game are more important than performance during the game itself.

If the Ticats can resign Luke Tasker, they will have three receivers who caught 1,000+ yards in 2017: Tasker, Banks (extended earlier), and Jalen Saunders, a rookie who will be in his second year of his first contract. Terrance Toliver will also be coming back from an ACL injury, giving them potentially quite a receiving corps.

Hamilton says there is no deal imminent with Johnny Manziel.

Early last month, Manziel's representative gave the Ticats until Wednesday to work out a "fair deal" to make Manziel their quarterback. If one wasn't reached, agent Erik Burkhardt said in a statement, "we will turn our focus to several other professional options readily available to us.” ...
"While the discussions with Johnny Manziel and his representative have been very cordial and informative, there is nothing imminent and nothing to report," the CFL club said. "We will continue to do our due diligence and will have no further public comment on the matter as we move forward."
There was no statement from Burkhardt, who also didn't immediately return a telephone message from The Canadian Press.

The Ticats have released former All-Star International DB Emanuel Davis but resigned National DE Justin Capiccioti through 2019, still leaving them with a National DL even if National Ted Laurent signs elsewhere.

Capicciotti, 28, appeared in all 18 regular season games with Hamilton last season making 16 starts at defensive end. The 6-3, 235-pound native of Toronto, Ontario, was second on the Tiger-Cats with seven quarterback sacks, while adding 40 defensive tackles, four special teams tackles, three tackles for loss, seven quarterback pressures, one forced fumble and one pass knock down. He was acquired by the Ticats from the Saskatchewan Roughriders on October 10, 2016, along with offensive lineman Xavier Fulton in exchange for defensive tackle Linden Gaydosh, wide receiver Tommy Streeter, and fourth and seventh round selections in the 2017 CFL Draft.
In 93-career CFL games with the Edmonton Eskimos (2012-13), Ottawa Redblacks (2014-15), Roughriders (2016) and Tiger-Cats (2016-17), Capicciotti has recorded 178 defensive tackles, 17 special teams tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 34 quarterback sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and four pass knock downs. Prior to turning pro, the 2015 CFL East Division All-Star suited up for the Simon Fraser Clan where he was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2011 after finishing the season with 10 sacks.

Ticats add Vernon Adams to their QB stable - in the flip with Charleston Hughes.

Adams is IMO a very good, promising QB talent - has showed some stuff in some CFL action.

Ticats just don't need Johnny Superstar with Masoli & Adams there, IMO. Hopefully they say good riddance to that clown; but nothing would surprise me.

And Capicciotti has been one of the most under-rated players in the CFL for some time IMO; ended up close to the league lead in tackles by a D-lineman last year - and he wasn't even playing full time reps early in the season when they had Chick; they also have last year's top pick Connor McGough to back-up / platoon with Cap at DE. And the Ticats also - last season - signed former CIS star (Metras winner) Ben D'Aguliar after he was cut by the Stamps - where he was never more than a special teamer - for added DE depth.

Not sure if the Ticats will be able to re-sign FA star DT Ted Laurent? - but they still have on their roster 3 former draft pick DTs - Atkinson, Gill and Vaughn ( the former 2 have had injury issues though). Loaded at NI DT as well ? Might be another classic CFL example of a team that seems to have plenty of talent/depth at a specific position where they could easily start NIs there - but not if they are not part of the pencilled-in GOB 7 only ? Gotta have good ole "NI depth" though. ;o)

Gotta have good ole "NI depth" though. ;o)
With Cappiciotti and Charleston they two top DEs, so it looks like they are preparing to let Laurent go to save money for other positions.
I also agree they are far better off with Adams who has some potential but may not turn out, than with the headaches associated with Manziel.
