Following the trade of Manziel, Hamilton has resigned QB Bryant Moniz, who was with the Tiger Cats in TC. His advantage is that he knows the offence and thus provides at least a short-term third stringer who knows the system.

Hamilton has five International receivers who have had 1,000 yard receiving seasons - Brandon Banks, Terrence Toliver, Jalen Saunders, Luke Tasker, and Chris Williams, as well as Rashad Lawrence and National Mike Jones. While there are reports they might use five International receivers against Montreal, I wonder if they might look at trading one the Internationals to strengthen the team elsewhere as the season wears on.

Canadian Sean Thomas Erlington continues to shine recovering a blocked punt and running it in for a TD against the Als, as well as carrying the ball four times for 40 yards, a 10.0 yard average. Both Erlington and fellow Canadian RB Mercer Timmis continue to see limited action at RB despite having games of 92 and 133 yards rushing respectively when the International RBs were injured.

Hamilton have started Internationals Alex Green and John White in five games over Canadians Sean Thomas Erlington and Mercer Timmis despite both Erlington and Timmis in their single starts outrushing Green and White in any of their five starts by a wide margin. Erlington (7.6) and Timmis (4.9) also have a higher yards per carry than Green (4.4) and White (4.0).

Ticats 1st round pick / CFL draft 1st overall - receiver Mark Chapman, who ended up signing as an undrafted FA with Denver in the NFL - had 2 receptions in the Broncos first pre-season game.

The Tiger Cats are suffering from the worst average field position at the start of their drives, which has helped contribute to their 3-5 record despite being second in both passing and rushing yardage. The difference between the Ticats starting position and their opponents is a cumulative negative 980 yards, which means the offence has to make up an average of 122.5 yards each game to reach the same average starting position as their opponents.

Conversely, Bo Levi Mitchell has an average field-position head start of 100 yards per game on whichever quarterback his Stampeders are playing against.
The Ticat offence has taken the field 106 times, 102 of those on their own side of the field. In the four drive starts they've had from the other guys' side of the 55-yard-line, they've scored three touchdowns. Two of those right-side-up possessions were in the 50-11 annihilation of Montreal. No other offence has started fewer than 11 times in the opponent's end. ...

You'd think they wouldn't want to compound the problem with preventable yardage losses. Yet, they are being flagged for an average of 97.8 yards in penalties per game, second to only Edmonton's crime rate of 111.9 yards. Of the 72 Hamilton penalties accepted by the other team, a league-high 23 have been for procedure or offside.

Hamilton has signed two International DBs with CFL experience: Josh Johnson and Robert Porter Jr.

Johnson, 27, appeared in four games with the Ottawa Redblacks earlier this season, posting 11 defensive tackles and two pass knock downs. The 5-10, 200-pound native of Dade City, Florida, has played 38 career CFL games with the B.C. Lions (2014-15) and Redblacks (2018), registering 103 defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, five quarterback sacks, three interceptions and two forced fumbles. Johnson previously spent two seasons with the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-17), registering nine combined tackles, 0.5 quarterback sacks and one pass defended in eight games in 2016. The Purdue University product was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Diego Chargers in 2013 before joining the Lions in the CFL.

Porter Jr., 25, suited up in five games with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2017, collecting two defensive tackles and five special teams tackles. The 5-10, 188-pound native of Detroit, Michigan, spent time with the NFL’s Chicago Bears in 2016 after two seasons at Jackson State (2014-15). He earned All-SWAC honours in 2015 after posting 38 tackles, one interception and 12 passes defended with the Tigers.

On reducing penalties on a highly penalized team, HC June Jones concentrated during the bye week, especially those before and after the whistle that have helped cost the Tiger Cats several games.
