LB/ST Frederic Plesius has been traded by Hamilton to the Als for LB/ST Nick Shortill.

Plesius goes back to the province where he played his university ball as a member of the Laval Rouge et Or, while Shortill goes back to Hamilton where he played at McMaster.
“We are very pleased to have acquired Frédéric, an established and valuable player in this league,” said Alouettes General Manager Kavis Reed. “We believe he will be a nice addition to our team. He is a versatile and intelligent player and we have the feeling he can be a solid contributor on the field. We really look forward in integrating him to our team.”
Plesius was selected 10th overall by Hamilton in the 2012 CFL Draft and has played 66 games with the Tiger-Cats while posting 25 defensive tackles and 58 special teams tackles with 1 quarterback sack. The Lennoxville, QC native played a key role in the two Vanier Cup Championships he won with the Université Laval Rouge et Or in 2010 and 2012. Plesius collected 123.5 tackles during his four seasons with the Rouge et Or, being awarded several defensive honours along the way.
Shortill, 24, appeared in all 18 of Montreal’s games in 2016 (one start), posting five defensive tackles and 17 special teams tackles. The 6-2, 223-pound linebacker has played 35 career CFL games with the Alouettes since being drafted by the team 13th overall (second round) in the 2015 CFL Draft. He has accumulated 22 defensive tackles and 29 special teams tackles during his two-year CFL career.

Odd trade for Montreal in that they traded a player who is 24 for one that is 29 and there doesn't seem to be a huge difference in talent.

Province of Quebec really likes to support their local talent. This move has as much to do with PR as anything.

Here's an explanation of why the trade was made.

In Shortill, the Ticats get a younger, cheaper version of Plesius. Just 24, the former McMaster Marauder played in all 18 of Montreal’s games, last season, posting five defensive tackles and 17 special teams tackles. The 6-foot-2, 223-pounder has played 35 career CFL games with the Alouettes since being drafted by the team 13th overall (second round) in the 2015 CFL Draft. He has accumulated 22 defensive tackles and 29 special teams tackles during his two-year CFL career.
The move makes sense for both teams. Plesius is a Quebec native who, despite re-signed with the Ticats last season after exploring free agency, is looking for an opportunity to start on defence – something he wasn’t going to get in Hamilton with all-star Simoni Lawrence and second-year man Larry Dean in front of him. The Alouettes, eager to re-energize their fan base, add a Francophone who played at Laval.
Shortill is still on his rookie contract and will allow the Ticats to see a salary cap savings of a approximately $50,000. A native of Nobleton, Ontario north of Toronto, Shortill is well-known as a former McMaster star who played in three Vanier Cups, winning one. Again, a local kid is easier to market to the fan base.
Both players will be free agents after this season are now more likely to re-sign with their existing clubs – no small consideration at a time when Canadian talent is more valuable than ever.

Both are good special teamers; both move closer to home.

Difference is IMO, Plesius has more talent to play on D - could play inside alongside Bear Woods in some Als 3-4 D looks? Als LB Winston Venable is a free agent and may flee to greener pastures, and Kyres Hebert is an old-timer ? And the Als without vet Canadian OTs - Perrett & Bourke - who were fixtures there for a long time - might want to look at one or even 2 import OTs ? = meaning they have to find some NIs to play D to meet the 7 only need apply CFL GOB criterion. Brouillete at safety was there only real regular starting NI on D last year; added Shologan to play DT and maybe Plesius can play some in certain packages (very good back-up for Woods if he gets hurt too).

Ticats have picked up free agent DB Abdul Kanneh.
Kanneh was the fourth-ranked free agent according to CFL.ca’s top 30 list, quickly emerging as one of the league’s top defensive backs throughout three years with the REDBLACKS, capping it all off with a win in the 104th Grey Cup Champonship.
The 26-year-old made 16 starts for the REDBLACKS in 2016, collecting 52 tackles, one sack, three interceptions and one forced fumble. But what he will likely be remembered for last season is his shoestring tackle on Andrew Buckley near the end zone in the final quarter of the Grey Cup, saving a major score and helping send things to overtime.

The resigning of DB Emanuel Davis and the addition of free agent Abdul Kanneh give Hamilton two all-star DBs in their secondary.

    - When your team has a glaring weakness, free agency is one of the avenues that can provide a quick fix.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats started that process Tuesday by signing all-star defensive back Abdul Kanneh away from the division-rival Ottawa Redblacks, one of the biggest moves on the opening day of CFL free agency.
Terms of Kanneh’s deal were not disclosed, but the player who helped save the day for the Redblacks with a last-minute, shoestring tackle in the Grey Cup win back in November will now turn his attention to helping improve a porous pass defence in The Hammer.
“He was one of our targets in free agency,” Ticats head coach Kent Austin said Tuesday evening. “I think he’s a great player and he brings a level of competitive and physicality.
“He brings a different attitude to the secondary.”
Austin then brought a familiar element back to his secondary, as well, re-signing coveted defensive back Emanuel Davis to a two-year deal, according to TSN’s Matt Scianitti.
It gives the Ticats a pair of 2016 East Division all-star halfbacks to build around in 2017, a welcome sight for a unit that struggled last season.
Thanks to a number of injuries and some poor play mixed in, the Ticats allowed 299.1 passing yards per game, fourth-worst in the league, and also gave up 8.6 yards per attempt, tied for the second-worst mark in the CFL.
Opponents also completed 70% of their passes against the Tabbies defence last year. Only the 5-13 Toronto Argonauts were more forgiving through the air, allowing quarterbacks to connect 70.9% of the time.
While the Ticats did sit second in the league with 17 interceptions last season, five of those landed in the hands of Davis, but the 26-year-old Kanneh brings 12 picks in 43-career games.

Receiver Brian Tyms has resigned with the Tiger Cats.

The Tiger-Cats have re-signed receiver Brian Tyms.
The contract will keep the former NFL player in Hamilton through the 2018 CFL season.
The 27-year-old receiver from Kent, Washington joined the Cats last October and played one regular season game and the Eastern Semi-Final.
Tyms played 18 career games in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns (2013) and New England Patriots (2014-15) where he was a member of the Super Bowl XLIX championship team.
