Connor Williams took the Grey Cup to an unusual place when he got his day with the Cup.

A day after visiting a fire hall, a high school and an elementary school, Connor Williams took the Grey Cup to a cemetery.
As important as it’s been to share his team’s success with the community, last Wednesday’s visit to Pinecrest cemetery, where his grandmother, grandfather and uncle Phil are buried, meant everything to the 25-year-old Ottawa Redblacks defensive lineman. Phil Ireland died at age 19 in a car accident Oct. 20, 1974. The brother of Williams’ mother Debra, Phil Ireland and his legacy have long been a big deal for Connor. ...

When Williams got his day with the Cup on Tuesday, he took it to schools he’d attended: St. James Catholic Elementary School and Holy Trinity High School.
“The high-school kids knew what the Cup was,” said Williams. “The elementary school was funny. One third of them knew what it was, another third were just impressed that it was a big, shiny trophy, the other third thought it was the Stanley Cup.”
The next morning, he went to the cemetery with his mom. It was Debra who told him: “Bubba, nanny and uncle Phil would be so proud.”
