Powell is a great back and Madu a good back up. Ilnicki is unproven, great CIS stats but that doesn't mean a thing the first time you get hit by bigger, harder hitting ex-NFL and NCAA players. Ilnicki has to unseat Gillanders and Gillander has proven to be a pretty good player.
Gillanders was playing very well for the RedBlacks last season - breaking several 7 or 8 + yard gainers and actually being more explosive than Powell was - early in the season- but then they basically stopped using Gillanders as the season wore on and Powell got better and ran very well.
Madu is an average to mediocre RB talent at best IMO; Gillanders is the plain better tailback IMO. Be interesting to see if Illnicki gets a real shot to play RB there or is just looked at for special teams or good ole "depth". His season for Alberta last year was outstanding; and he did play in a RedBlacks exhibition game last year - and broke a big gainer (20+ yards i seem to recall?) in the limited time he got. I wonder if Jesse Lumsden - good RB out of CIS ball - could have done a thing against the big, tough ex-NFL/NCAA players patrolling CFL defences? Same deal for Andrew Harris out of Junior ball - probably going to get killed.
