The RedBlacks have high expectations for DB Sherrod Baltimore in his second year, following his performance in 2017 after being identified in a tryout camp.

The REDBLACKS – particularly the scouting staff – showed just what can come out of those tryouts when they brought defensive back Sherrod Baltimore to training camp earlier this year.
After some time on the practice roster to start the year, the 25-year-old Maryland native hasn’t looked back. Baltimore played 12-straight games and recorded 46 defensive tackles, tying him for fifth-best on the team. He’s also proven to be a popular guy in the room and an energetic presence in games, whether he’s on the field or standing on the bench to fire up the crowd.

Ottawa has signed the 2017 Hec Crighton Trophy winner, 5'10" 220 lb RB Ed Ilnicki from the University of Alberta, to a two year contract.

Ilnicki was the Redblacks’ seventh-round pick in the 2017 Canadian Football League draft and attended training camp before being released and returning to Alberta for his final season of university football eligibility. ...
Ilnicki set a single-season Canada West conference single-season record with 1,468 rushing yards. He also led all Canadian university players in rushing touchdowns (11) and carries (196).

The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, which owns the RedBlacks, as well as the Ottawa 67's in junior hockey and the Ottawa Fury in soccer, has a new CEO, Mark Goudie. He replaces Bernie Ashe, who did so much to help rebuild football in Ottawa. Goldie and Ashe have close connections, suggesting that the team will continue to be run in a similar manner.

Goudie had served as top financial executive at the Ottawa Senators, while Ashe was chief operating officer. Despite moving on to other companies, they had kept in touch. ...
Under Ashe, OSEG’s first years were spent putting out fires — dealing with construction hiccups, finding customers to fill 400,000 square feet of retail space, re-negotiating terms with the City of Ottawa over a defective arena roof, you name it. The partnership also did a lot of hiring. Goudie said OSEG employed just 12 full-time workers when he started there in 2013. Today it employs 125, a workforce that expands to more than 900 part-timers on game nights.
The result of all the spending was larger-than-forecast losses for the partnership in 2015 and 2016. The combined net loss for both years was $27 million on revenue of $92.9 million. OSEG is expected to absorb further deficits through to this year. But, thanks in part to the fact Lansdowne’s retailing space is now 95 per cent leased, those losses should soon disappear.
“This is the end of our startup phase,” said Goudie, who has the luxury of more stable operations. “This is the first time we’ve been able to take a breath. I have some ideas about what comes next, but I want to work through them first with my management team.” Although Goudie declined to be precise about his plans, in general they are aimed at getting more people onto the Lansdowne property. “The site is not being used to capacity,” he noted. ...

For Goudie, who previously served as top financial executive at a string of technology firms — Plaintree Systems, World Heart Corp. and Mxi Technologies — the focus will remain squarely on Lansdowne’s 40-acre patch of land.
“We’ve built an exceptional entertainment venue,” he said. “It’s time to make use of it to the fullest.”

The signing or RBs William Powell, Mossis Madu and 2017 Hec Crighton Trophy winner Ed Ilnicki gives the RedBlacks one of the best and deepest set of RBs in the league.

Powell is a great back and Madu a good back up. Ilnicki is unproven, great CIS stats but that doesn't mean a thing the first time you get hit by bigger, harder hitting ex-NFL and NCAA players. Ilnicki has to unseat Gillanders and Gillander has proven to be a pretty good player.

Gillanders was playing very well for the RedBlacks last season - breaking several 7 or 8 + yard gainers and actually being more explosive than Powell was - early in the season- but then they basically stopped using Gillanders as the season wore on and Powell got better and ran very well.

Madu is an average to mediocre RB talent at best IMO; Gillanders is the plain better tailback IMO. Be interesting to see if Illnicki gets a real shot to play RB there or is just looked at for special teams or good ole "depth". His season for Alberta last year was outstanding; and he did play in a RedBlacks exhibition game last year - and broke a big gainer (20+ yards i seem to recall?) in the limited time he got. I wonder if Jesse Lumsden - good RB out of CIS ball - could have done a thing against the big, tough ex-NFL/NCAA players patrolling CFL defences? Same deal for Andrew Harris out of Junior ball - probably going to get killed.

Having signed potential free agent Alex Mateas, GM is looking at who else he can sign before free agency on February 13th. Former Argo Diontae Spencer remains questionable as he is still doing NFL work outs

Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins said re-signing Mateas was “something we were hoping and thinking we could get done. He’s proven he can be a difference-maker out there. He’s going to continue to get better. He’s also a local guy and that’s a factor.”

A centre at the University of Connecticut, Mateas has mostly played left guard in the CFL, but moved over to centre and looked right at home when filling in for the injured Jon Gott in 2017. Whether Mateas plays centre or guard going forward will begin to play out heading into training camp, with potential roster moves by the Redblacks also being factors.
Nolan MacMillan, another starting offensive lineman, is one of the Redblacks’ potential free agents. Others still unsigned include linebacker Taylor Reed, defensive backs Jerrell Gavins and Jonathan Rose, defensive lineman Zack Evans and receivers Diontae Spencer and Jake Harty. Spencer is still working out for National Football League teams, hoping for a free-agent deal there.
“It’s always give and take on both sides,” Desjardins said. “We’ll see how it goes. There are some guys we’ll have back and other guys we won’t have back. Remember, each signing impacts the next guy.”

Like other CFL teams the RedBlacks have done extensive community work throughout 2017, as in every other season, something for which they often don't get enough recognition at charitable events, minor sports school visits etc. Last year they did 3,800 hours of community service.

Ottawa traded Patrick Lavoie to Montreal in exchange for J. C Beaulieu today in a trade that GM Marcel Desjardins openly admits was aimed at opening up cap space in order to keep their starters.

“We’re trying to find a way to maximize our (salary) cap space,” Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins said. “We’re really trying to maximize our money, put our money into our starters, not having to invest as much in players who are not necessarily full-time starters. J.C. was a guy we felt would be able to come in and do a lot of things Pat does for significantly less money, and he’s also younger, which never hurts. That’s how it all came about. ”
The deal caught Lavoie off-guard. “This morning I was making breakfast before going to the gym and I got a call from Marcel,” Lavoie said. “He told me they’d made a trade. I was like, ‘OK … hmm.’ He said, ‘We traded you.’ I was like, ‘Oh, OK, me?’ I was surprised, I was shocked. ...
There was no animosity from the 30-year-old, who spent the past four years with the Redblacks after starting his Canadian Football League career with two seasons with the Alouettes. The 30-year-old Laval University product had 35 catches for 280 yards last season. ...
The 6-3, 220-pound Beaulieu has played four CFL seasons, all with Montreal. Last season, the 27-year-old from Trois-Rivières, Que., rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown in 10 games. ...
“You’re losing experience, but you have to be able to do that at some point,” Desjardins said. “We reached out to a few teams. Montreal was the most interested. It came together in a couple of days. I think geographically it makes the most sense for Pat, too. He’s been nothing but class, excellent both on and off the field for us. He’s contributed a lot to getting this franchise to where it is today.”
The Alouettes were happy to obtain Lavoie, who has 125 catches for 1,149 yards and nine touchdowns in 100 CFL games. “Since he arrived in the CFL, he has been a consistent and versatile player. He will fit very well in our new offensive system,” Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed said.
“If you asked me, other than Ottawa, where would I want to play, I’d say Montreal,” Lavoie said. “I’ve got a lot of family and friends there. It’s a good place to be.” Lavoie, who has one year left on his contract, feels he has plenty more football left in his body.

The Redblacks have made a contract offer to National DL Mehdi Abdesmad, their third round draft choice in 2016. He instead signed with Tennessee, but was cut in 2017 and then signed and released by Tampa Bay.

Could be a real nice signing - especially if they were to lose FA Zack Evans; if not - Abdesmad signed and pans out in TC, to go along with vets Evans & Lattanzio at DT - they could easily start 2 NI DTs, IMO; but rookie import Ceresna was good for them last season too.

Ottawa has pulled off a double trade. At the end of it all they obtained a 2018 fourth round draft pick and a negotiation list player.

Very briefly, former all-star defensive end Odell Willis was an Ottawa Redbrick. However, after acquiring the 33-year-old in a Canadian Football League trade with the Edmonton Eskimos, with 23-year-old defensive tackle Jake Ceresna going to Alberta, the Redblacks flipped Willis to the B.C. Lions for a fourth-round draft pick and a player from the Lions’ negotiation list.
Ceresna looked as if he had promise in 2017, his rookie season, with 18 tackles and two sacks, but it’s possible the Redblacks didn’t figure he’d fit into the scheme of new defensive co-ordinator Noel Thorpe.
“For us, it was a function of getting a very good draft pick for a one-year American interior D-lineman, a guy we like and who’s a great guy,” Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins said. “We were never going to be able to afford (Willis’s) contract, so we decided to do the flip with B.C.”
