I don't think it was the coaches fault Desjardins let a lot of talent go, but I'm more intrigued by the timing of the news. I thought teams couldn't make moves like this during Grey Cup week ?
I don't believe the team made any official announcements. Sounds lime a source leaked this info.

I understand, but the team would have to know that it would most likely leak. In either case, I'm a bit surprised by these moves. Offense nor even the offensive coaching staff is the problem in Ottawa right now - IMO it's the lack of talent and defense, and that's on Desjardins. I wonder, is the shine coming off from Desjardins now ?

With his release by Ottawa, I wouldn't mind seeing OL coach Bryan Chiu back with the Argos.

After three consecutive 1,000 yard seasons with the RedBlacks, it is not surprising that Brad Sinopoli says his first choice as a potential free agent is to resign with Ottawa.

I would rather we keep Jonathan Himebauch, if he's interested in returning. Nothing against Chiu, but JH seems to be an excellent o-line coach.

Agreed. Gotta wonder though if an interview for the Montreal HC job is in the cards for JH.

Unless Himebauch leaves on his own, I see no reason to replace him with anyone. IMO he's the best OL coach in the League, by wide margin. Argos OL improved his first week back with us - seems like a no brainer to me.

On the eve of the 2017 Grey Cup in Ottawa, here's an interview with the man who made the most famous Grey Cup catch in Ottawa football history, as well as his CFL Hall of Fame career, his revolution of the tight end position in Canadian football, his Most Outstanding Player award, and the current RedBlacks team: Tony Gabriel.

Trevor Harris's leadership is being questioned for not sticking around during Grey Cup week in Ottawa, as Ricky Ray did when the game was in Toronto last year but the Argos were not in the GC. Is it also a sign that he is thinking about moving to another team during free agency?

I agree with the read on Harris. He was open to an extension before the season only if it game him more money for 2017. Ottawa said no.
Now it seams he want more money on a new deal when he lead his team to second place and a playoff loss. Then bolts home instead of being around for media and fans Grey Cup week.
As much as I wanted Barker to sign him....I wouldn't ever want this guy on our team!

I don't see any issue with Harris wanting to go home to be with his family when the Redblacks were knocked out.

The Redblacks today officially announced the release of four coaches: OL coach Bryan Chiu; DB coach Ike Charlton Receiver coach Travis Moore and LB coach Derek Oswalt. The following article from two days ago suggests that there could be major changes in personnel and Rick Campbell's job coming as well.

The Ottawa Redblacks could look a lot different on and off the field in 2018.
The team will have to deal with several potential key free agents, including quarterback Trevor Harris and receiver Brad Sinopoli, plus put new coaches in place during the off-season. ...
Sources indicate head coach Rick Campbell will take over defensive play-calling, but that may not be something the team announces. It actually wouldn’t be a huge departure from what the Redblacks did in 2017, when Campbell already called much of the defence, but that role will be elevated. It would be logical that Mark Nelson, previously defensive co-ordinator, would replace Oswalt as linebackers coach. ...

One speculated change may never happen. Didier Ormejuste of the French-language sports network RDS tweeted last week that Redblacks offensive co-ordinator Jaime Elizondo would be interviewed for the vacant Montreal Alouettes head coaching job. It would seem like a longshot for the Alouettes, who fired Jacques Chapdelaine in mid-season, to hire Elizondo. If they don’t, he will return to the Redblacks with one season remaining on his contract.
Re-signing Harris would appear to be a priority. The 31-year-old, who was paid between $400,000 and $450,000 in 2017, might take something in that range to return to Ottawa. A contract with lower base pay and incentives clauses might be a way to get a deal done. If the Redblacks don’t get Harris signed before CFL free agency begins in February, he will have options as the Alouettes and possibly the Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders would be in the market for a No. 1 passer.
If not Harris, what are the options? If 26-year-old Edmonton backup QB James Franklin makes it to free agency, he will get offers, but would you pay No. 1 quarterback money to a guy who has thrown 176 passes over the past three seasons, including only 19 in 2017? How about Zach Collaros, still under contract with Hamilton? The 29-year-old has a contract worth more than $500,000 and it doesn’t seem likely he will have a starting job in Hamilton next season. While it has been suggested he could be released before a February bonus is due, the Ticats will have trade options.
Darian Durant may also be available if Montreal looks elsewhere. Toronto’s Ricky Ray could also be a free agent, but, terrific talent aside, do the Redblacks want to go into 2018 with a 38-year-old quarterback?

From Ottawa's viewpoint the Grey Cup was an well-run economic and social success.

Ottawa has released DB Nicholas Taylor and signed several players, although there is an obvious error in the announcement, as the 2018 season has yet to start. His stats refer to the 2017 season.

Taylor played eight games for Ottawa in 2018, recording 34 tackles on defence and one on special teams. The Florida International product spent two seasons in the nation’s capital, totaling 62 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and a touchdown.
On the same day, the REDBLACKS were busy making additional moves, announcing five signings. Offensive lineman Kendall Pace, linebacker Lamar Louis, receiver Richard Mullaney, linebacker Avery Williams and defensive lineman Cliff Matthews have all been added to the roster.

The Redblacks have added John McDonnell as their OL coach.

A longtime coach at Washington State, McDonell comes to the CFL following two years as Senior Offensive Analyst with the Georgia State Panthers. In all, McDonell’s coaching career has spanned 30 years with other stops including Tulane, Stanford, Notre Dame and Purdue. ...
“We are excited to add Coach McDonell to our coaching staff,” said REDBLACKS Head Coach Rick Campbell. “He is a career football man with a wealth of football knowledge. I know he’s thrilled to be a part of RNation.”McDonell played college football at Carroll College, where he would ultimately start his coaching career in 1981. The Spokane native was inducted into the Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.

DC Noel Thorpe will be doing double duty as a coach following the reshuffling of the Ottawa coaching staff.

Four went out, three came in, but it looks as if the Ottawa Redblacks coaching staff is complete for 2018.
The Redblacks, who decided not to re-sign receivers coach Travis Moore, defensive backs coach Ike Charlton, offensive line coach Bryan Chiu and linebackers coach Derek Oswalt, have shuffled the rest of the staff for head coach Rick Campbell.
With Noel Thorpe coming in as Redblacks defensive co-ordinator — he was Montreal Alouettes defensive co-ordinator and assistant head coach for five seasons before being fired last September — former defensive co-ordinator Mark Nelson has been re-assigned as linebackers coach. Thorpe will also be defensive backs coach.
Winston October is the new receivers coach, while Canadian Football League newcomer John McDonell will be offensive-line coach. Patrick Bourgon moves from offensive assistant to defensive assistant.
Campbell was already calling many of the defensive plays in 2017, so why bring in a new defensive co-ordinator?
Said Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins, who is at CFL winter meetings in Alberta: “It’s partially because we felt we needed to secure Noel’s services, and it wasn’t going to be as a position coach. Coach Nelson understood — he had worked with Noel — that having Noel as our co-ordinator would make us a better defence and a better team. “He’s somebody who can create an identity on our defence. He knows the league, he knows the personnel. I know it was out there that maybe Rick was going to be the co-ordinator, but that would have spread him thin. Having Rick, having Noel and having Mark, all with experience as a co-ordinator, will make us a better defence.” Desjardins said “it was always the premise” when Thorpe was hired that he would also coach Redblacks defensive backs.
