When Brent Maher went 6/6 in FGs part way through the third quarter against Hamilton last week, it looked like he had a chance to tie or break the number of FGs kicked in a single game, which was set at eight by Dave Ridgeway (twice) and Mark McLoughlin. However, the inept Ticats wouldn't cooperate, giving up only TDs when Ottawa marched down the field the rest of the game.

Ottawa has released LB marquee free agent signing Khalil Bass who had fallen to a backup role and told GM Desjardins he no longer wanted to be on the team when he was asked.

The Redblacks have signed former Argo LB Greg Jones.

The 28-year-old spent two seasons in Toronto and 2016 with Saskatchewan. Jones has played in 46 CFL games making 204 tackles, 42 special teams tackles, five sacks, forced two fumbles and snagged one interception. He had been a free agent since the Riders released him in April.

I'm surprised to hear that Jones is only 28. For some reason I thought he was about that age when he was with the Argos, but looking at his CFL profile, it's true.
It's us vs the rest of the country

No surprise that CFL Simulation has all but guaranteed Ottawa and the Argos will make the playoffs after their wins last week.

The fight for first may still come right down to the wire, but for now, the Argos and REDBLACKS have separated themselves from the rest of the pack with pivotal Week 13 victories. The East Division’s top two teams have a 97.56 per cent chance and a 96.81 per cent chance of making the playoffs respectively.
Montreal and Hamilton, meanwhile, have fallen behind. The Ticats failed to capitalize on their mini two-game winning streak, watching their playoff odds fall from 11.5 per cent 4.62 per cent following a loss to the Brandon Bridge-led Riders.

Ottawa has signed three players with CFL experience: National WR/ST Scott McDonnell who played for them for three years but was cut in TC, former Bomber four year veteran National DB/ST Teague Sherman and International RB/KR Henry Josey, who played for the Argos in 2015.

MacDonnell looked quite good IMO in a bit of playing time back on that 1st year RedBlacks team - that featured so many drops problems from the receiving corps; thought he would progress - but i guess not and Ottawa went out and signed all those known FA receivers for their 2nd year. At least he should know their offence and system; and i guess he couldn't impress enough to get a shot at some playing time in his stops with Edmonton (who had all those receiver injuries) and on a very average to needy Bomber receiving corps.

Sherman had a pretty good season at OLB for the Bombers a couple of years back - seemed like a play-maker / nose for the ball type D player; maybe a bit surprising that no CFL team has picked him up in the past 2 seasons ?

Greg Jones is a solid LB IMO - but maybe only can play MLB in the CFL? - maybe he could help Ottawa at Will LB with Bass cut ?

While Lindley took first team reps yesterday, both Harris and Tate have made significant progress towards starting according to Campbell. Harris was "launching rockets" while Tate was throwing again.

Good news for the RedBlacks as they prepare to play BC on the weeKend: former Argo QB Trevor Harris is taking first team reps and Campbell expects he will play.

LB Jerrell Gavins five tackles and a forced fumble during his return to the lineup in the Lions game helped in the RedBlacks victory, but Ottawa is still missing OL John Gott, Nolan MacMillan and former Argo Roger SirVincent, as well as another former Argos WR Kenny Shaw who are on the six game injured list. Former Argo LB Greg Jones has not played yet for Ottawa and is on the one game injured list.

Despite missing the Rider game due to injury, Sinopoli has reached 1,000+ yards for the third year in a row as a RedBlack. He is one player for whom leaving Calgary, where he gained only 614 yards in four seasons, has been a big bonus due to its receiver depth.

Trevor Harris talks about the significance of beating the Riders when the RedBlacks did not have their A game and how Ottawa is a beat-up team from playing 17 games in a row without a break in the radio audio below. No team should have this kind of schedule in the future.

With Brad Sinopoli out for the season, National Jake Harty will be stepping up to take his place, according to HC Rick Campbell.

Ottawa RedBlacks have lost one of their better DBs in Jerrell Gavins for the season because of a knee injury during practice.

After a few earlier fizzles, Trevor Harris finally led a late-game comeback, a talent that top-notch QBs demonstrate.

Former Argo Diontae Spencer set a single game league record of 496 all-purpose yards consisting of 133 reception yards, 165 in kick returns, 169 in punt returns and a 29 yard field goal return against Hamilton.

    https://www.ottawaredblacks.com/2017...ards-nominees/

The Ottawa RedBlacks nominees for Outstanding awards are:

    Player: Greg Ellington
    Defensive: Antoine Pruneau
    Canadian: Brad Sinopoli
    Offensive Lineman: Alex Mateas
    Special Teams: Diontae Spencer
    Rookie: Sherrod Baltimore

Sinopoli should win the Eastern nomination for Canadian but will lose to the Western nominee, who I think should be Andrew Harris both on merit and because he was born in Canada, but is more likely to be the so-called Canadian Alex Singleton. Winnipeg's failure to nominate Harris for MOP when he outshone Winnipeg MOP nominee Matt Nichols means he is at a disadvantage compared to Singleton who was also nominated as Calgary's MOP.
Former Argo Diontae Spencer may win the ST player award but I think Martese Jackson first and Stefan Logan second is more deserving on a ST only basis. However, Spencer's performance as a receiver may help him win the award.
I don't think Ellingson can beat out Ray, in part because Ellingson has cooled off considerably recently.

CFL.ca argues that three statistical factors should be weighed in predicting the game. Their argument is: both games between these teams were decided by one point and both teams have been mostly winning in the last part of the season; ball security tilts towards Ottawa as it is +26 in total turnovers compared to the Riders; and Trevor Harris is starting his first playoff game, raising questions about whether that will affect his play. I agree that the two regular season games show little difference between the two teams and ball security is usually a deciding factor. However, Trevor Harris has repeatedly shown himself to be cool under pressure and a better QB than Glenn, so the fact that this is his first playoff start is not very likely to be a significant factor. Thus, given the advantage Ottawa has in turnovers and its home field advantage with Harris at QB, I give the edge to Ottawa. Where the Riders have an edge is Bridge is much better than Tate.

I expect an Ottawa win. I think Harris comes out on fire. No more slow starts. Ottawa has a packed house cheering them on. The East Final will be a dandy.

After all the success the RedBlacks have had in attracting fans since their return to the league, it is surprising to hear them announce they still have 2,500 tickets available for the semi-final.
