I admire him for standing up for what he believes in despite the threat to his career.

The RedBlacks have placed Greg Ellington on the disabled list, which allows the team to pay him at a reduced rate.

Players are usually placed on the disabled list when they have a non-football related injury or are absent from the club for personal or family reasons. According to the collective bargaining agreement, players on the disabled list receive $2,000 or 60 per cent of their game cheque, whichever is less. Like the one-game injured list, players on the disabled list count against the salary cap.
But Adding Ellingson to the disabled list doesn’t preclude him from playing Saturday if he’s available but gives the Redblacks a roster spot in the meantime.

Ottawa has signed two Nationals: RB Greg Morris and WR Jacob Scarfone. Morris, in particular, has been a good backup.

Scarfone was drafted in the 6th round, 47th overall in the 2017 CFL Draft by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Prior to being drafted in the CFL, he played for the University of Guelph Gryphons, where he played for four seasons. In 2015, he set a U of G single-season record of 940 receiving yards, a year where he caught 77 passes and scored 10 touchdowns. ...

Morris has played 44 CFL games with Edmonton and Saskatchewan and has 28 caries for 178 yards and a touchdown in that span. Racked up 995 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in ten games in 2013 at the New Mexico Military Institute. Morris also showed he can be a dual threat during his CFL career, in which he has caught nine passes for 111 yards.

Lewis Ward broke Rene Paredes 2016 single season record of 32 consecutive FGs, going 7/7 against the Eskimos to give him 37 in a row in his rookie season. Next up is Paredes' 2012-13 record of 39 consecutive FGs, which means he could tie or break the record in his next game. Quite an accomplishment for a Canadian that most figured was nothing more than TC fodder for International veterans Richie Leone and Sergio Castillo.

Which Paredes "record" included that blocked FG?

Paredes (CFL all-time most accurate place kicker), AND Lewis Ward (has set the CFL single season consecutive FG mark as a rookie) = both un-drafted by the CFL expert "scouts". LOL

But hey, maybe the kicking game is not that important in the CFL and you are better served drafting back-up long-snappers and special teams only 4th string linebackers or DEs. ;o)

William Powell has taken over the CFL rushing lead with two great performances in the last two weeks, gaining 148 yards and CFL Top Performer honours in week 14, and another 147 yards in week 15.

The Redblacks have released 2017 sixth round draft pick Austen Hartley after he refused to go on their PR. He was 3/22 in five games this year after going catching 2 passes for 57 yards in the 2017 Eastern semi-final against the Riders.

Maybe Hartley figures he will catch on with another CFL team? - might be a smart move; Ottawa will only use one NI receiver (Sinopoli) in their 5 pack look, and they have vet Feoli-Gudino as a back-up receiver.

A lot of Canadian receiver talent is up against this in the CFL now, with the trend to mostly import receivers getting the playing time; BC 1st round pick from last season Dan Vandervoort has not progressed to any playing time in his 2nd season (and the Lions have started 2 NI receivers at times); the Als had George Johnson in their 5 pack early in the season but he was rarely thrown to, and lately they have been going all import at receiver.

A CFL team could probably load-up on Canadian receiver talent next season if they sign some FAs who are going nowhere with other teams and indicate/promise they would play 2 or more NIs in their receiving corps; also a deep & talented looking receiver crop for next draft.

Here's a podcast interview with Lewis Ward about his great rookie season that finds his 37 consecutive FGs only two short of the CFL record.

The Redblacks have added International OL Pierce Burton to their PR, 15 months after tearing up his knee in 2017 pre-season game.

During a 2017 Canadian Football League pre-season game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the 6-6, 300-pound offensive lineman tore the patellar tendon in his left knee, ending his season before it really began. He was released soon after that by the Redblacks, his third CFL team after previous stints with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Montreal Alouettes. He’d also been with five National Football League teams: Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons.

With National OL Nolan MacMillan placed on the six game injured list, veteran National OL Jon Gott will be on the roster against Winnipeg after being benched for the last five games.

“It’s never fun to say that you’re not playing any more,” Gott said. “It’s been a while since I’ve sat on the bench so it was something different. I dealt with it and tried to help the guys as much as I could and just come in with a good attitude. I’ve been playing for ten years so I think I’ve proven how I can play so I’m just going out there to have fun and help the team win.”

Gott said his time on the sidelines had him pondering his football future. “It comes into mind and you can’t help thinking about it a bit, but you’ve just got to help the team out as much as you can and worry about that when the season is over.”

Lewis Ward going 3/3 against the Bombers gives 40 consecutive FGs, breaking the CFL record of 39 set by Rene Paredes. It should get him consideration for the CFL rookie of the year award.

William Powell is duelling it out with 2017 rushing leader Andrew Harris, with Powell 1,236 yards just 3 yards ahead of Harris, although Powell also has a game in hand. Last year Harris beat Powell by 9 yards for the rushing title.

Ottawa has acquired a top Canadian in LB Chris Ackie, who has 81 tackles in 13 games in this his fourth CFL season, from the Als in return for a 2019 second round draft choice as the Redblacks continue to build for a playoff run.

Bizzarre - WTF is Mavis thinking there by trading away one of his best young players (maybe he knew he would flee as a FA this off-season and wanted to get something ???) - guy has emerged as a force on D this year and near the best Will OLB in the league now IMO; instant big upgrade for the mediocre talent Ottawa D; let's see if Thorpe puts him to use or sticks with his imports favored 1st ways there ?
