What a concept a coach that is looking to win with the best player instead of worrying about some Hall of Fame status and afraid to bench an aging over the hill QB.
Hold on a second, that happened here twice in two years!

I just listened to Burris on TSN being questioned at the Ottawa quarterback club. The interviewer asked how he could throw a ball with his finger bent the opposite way? he said that he wears a special glove to throw but it's not working out, he admits that the ball just isn't leaving his hand smoothly.
I don't think he's over the hill at all, I think it's the broken finger and the fact that he isn't ready to play.
Glad to see the coach stepped in and benched him. You go with the healthiest guy.

But you can't blame him for that loss on Friday, the DBs and LBs played terrible. Give up 5 TD passes to Glenn?

RedBlacks have extended former Argo Sir Vincent Rogers and Connor Williams.

A career year and a Grey Cup championship have landed Ottawa REDBLACKS defensive lineman Connor Williams a two-year contract extension.
After missing nearly all of last season due to a back injury, Williams suited up for all 18 REDBLACKS games this season, including the East Final against the Edmonton Eskimos and the Grey Cup game against the Calgary Stampeders.
“Connor has been an integral part of our team from the very beginning,” said REDBLACKS General Manager Marcel Desjardins. “He displayed versatility and effectiveness across the defensive line in 2016 and we are pleased that Connor will be a member of the REDBLACKS for the next two seasons.”
Not only did Williams feature in every game in 2016, he set new career highs with 18 defensive tackles and five sacks.
“It’s absolutely phenomenal. I love the organization from the top down and I love everything about this city,” said Williams. “I’m an Ottawa boy through and through and I’m extremely happy to continue playing for the organization and my city.
“This season had some ups and downs but I believe group is solidifying itself as a premier organization. The Grey Cup is in town next year and the goal is to be back in the game. That would be incredible.”
The re-signing means the Utah State graduate, selected by Ottawa 18th overall in 2013, will remain in red and black through the 2018.
During Grey Cup week, the REDBLACKS also locked up left tackle and the CFL’s top offensive lineman in 2015, SirVincent Rogers to a two-year extension.

Ottawa has extended 2014 RedBlack nominee for rookie of the year Antoine Pruneau through 2018.

The Ottawa REDBLACKS announced that defensive back Antoine Pruneau, a key piece of the club’s run to a Grey Cup championship, has signed a two-year contract extension.
The new deal will keep the 27-year-old Montreal native in red and black through the 2018 season.

The RedBlacks have extended two more players.

The Ottawa REDBLACKS continued to shape their 2017 roster on Wednesday, announcing the re-signing of defensive linemen Nigel Romick and Ettore Lattanzio to two-year contract extensions.
“We’re happy to have both Ettore and Nigel back for the next two seasons,” said REDBLACKS General Manager Marcel Desjardins. “They are both key contributors and will allow us to maintain our depth of national players.”
Romick, who was selected in the third round of the 2014 CFL Draft, was limited to just two appearances in 2016 due to injury. In 2015, while suiting up for all 18 games, the 25-year-old Thunder Bay native recorded two defensive tackles and 17 special teams tackles.
Lattanzio, a 25-year-old Ottawa native who also starred for the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, had a breakout year for the REDBLACKS in 2016 after joining the team midway through the 2015 campaign. En route to a Grey Cup championship, Lattanzio had 24 tackles and five sacks while dressing for all but one game.
Since winning Ottawa’s first Grey Cup in 40 years, the REDBLACKS have already re-signed a number of key pieces from this year’s championship run, including offensive lineman SirVincent Rogers, defensive lineman Connor Williams and defensive back Antoine Pruneau.

Unsurprisingly, after making it to the Grey Cup in only their second season and winning it in their third year, Ottawa has announced its entire coaching staff will be back for next year.

One month since being crowned Grey Cup Champions, the Ottawa REDBLACKS announced Friday that the entire coaching staff from the historic 2016 season will return next year.
“It’s exciting to have our entire coaching staff back for 2017, “ said Head Coach Rick Campbell, who has guided the REDBLACKS to back-to-back Grey Cup games and will return for a fourth year at the helm. “Their hard work and dedication played a huge role in us winning the 2016 Grey Cup. This continuity allows us to continue to grow and build a winning team for 2017.”
In addition to Campbell, returning in 2017 are :
    • Jaime Elizondo, Offensive Coordinator
    • Mark Nelson, Defensive Coordinator
    • Bob Dyce, Special Teams Coordinator
    • Bryan Chiu, Offensive Line Coach
    • Leroy Blugh, Defensive Line Coach
    • Travis Moore, Receivers Coach
    • Ike Charlton, Defensive Backs Coach
    • Derek Oswalt, Linebackers Coach
    • Beau Walker, Offensive Assistant
    • Patrick Bourgon, Coaching assistant

Henry Burris has been named the CFL's person of the year.

Burris was voted the CFL’s Person of the Year for 2016 while Jones was voted Newsmaker of the Year, as CFL.ca’s writers reflected on what will surely go down as a season for the ages.

Ottawa has released three DBs who hope to sign on with a NFL team.

The Ottawa REDBLACKS have granted the release of defensive backs Forrest Hightower, Mitchell White and Jeff Richards to allow the players to pursue opportunities in the NFL.
All three players played important roles for the REDBLACKS in 2016 as the third-year CFL club won its first-ever Grey Cup Championship and first title for an Ottawa CFL team in 40 years.
“The REDBLACKS would like to thank Forrest, Mitchell and Jeff for their hard work and important contributions to the team this past season,” said General Manager Marcel Desjardins. “Players being offered new opportunities is part of winning a championship and we wish these three the best in whatever comes next for them.”
The three defensive backs were all due to become free agents on Feb. 14.

LB Taylor Reed has resigned with Ottawa.

The Ottawa REDBLACKS have signed veteran linebacker Taylor Reed to a one-year extension, the team confirmed Tuesday.
Reed was due to become a free agent on Feb. 14.
One of a number of key defensive players previously pending free agency, Reed arrived in Ottawa 10 games into the 2016 season after being released by the Calgary Stampeders, the team the REDBLACKS would go on to beat to win the Grey Cup.
In just eight regular season games as a REDBLACK, the 25-year-old Texas native had 39 tackles and a sack, including a career-high 12 tackles against Winnipeg on October 29

Ottawa fans are helping raise money for former Ottawa Rough Rider LB Rick Sowieta who wants to try a non-traditional form of pancreatic cancer treatment.

The greater Ottawa football family is stepping up to help one of its own.
Rick Sowieta, a former Ottawa Rough Riders linebacker, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last February. Over the following 10 months, Sowieta underwent intensive chemotherapy to fight the inoperable, stage three cancer that carries with it a life expectancy of just six to 18 months.
“A few more months of life on chemo isn’t good enough,” states a YouCaring site dedicated to raising funds to help with the expenses associated with Sowieta’s battle. ...

So far, the fundraising campaign has raised more than $11,000 for the man who played seven of his 10 CFL seasons in Ottawa, before endearing himself to the community once again as owner of popular eatery Rick’s Cantina.
Fellow former Rough Rider and current REDBLACKS radio colour analyst Jeff Avery, who played four seasons with Sowieta, isn’t remotely surprised by the outpouring of support for his friend and former teammate.
“Everyone knows and loves the guy,” Avery said. “He’s a great personality, he was a super teammate and an outstanding football player, but just a really personable guy.

Whether or not Burris is named #1 QB, will have a major role in deciding on whether he retires or not.

As CFL fans await confirmation on whether or not Grey Cup MVP quarterback Henry Burris will return next season, the 40-year-old reportedly told TSN‘s Gary Lawless that the decision could hinge on his role for next season.
Burris announced immediately following Ottawa’s 104th Grey Cup victory that he would ponder retirement and make a decision in the winter.
As the quarterback carousel continues, with Kevin Glenn recently released by the Bombers and now, on Friday, Darian Durant’s rights traded to Montreal, the status of the 17-year CFL veteran remains among the off-season’s biggest questions.
“Being told I am the No. 1 quarterback in Ottawa would have a major impact on my decision,” Burris told Lawless in an article posted on TSN.ca. “But whatever they tell me, I will have to sit down with my wife and kids to decide.”

Connor Williams took the Grey Cup to an unusual place when he got his day with the Cup.

A day after visiting a fire hall, a high school and an elementary school, Connor Williams took the Grey Cup to a cemetery.
As important as it’s been to share his team’s success with the community, last Wednesday’s visit to Pinecrest cemetery, where his grandmother, grandfather and uncle Phil are buried, meant everything to the 25-year-old Ottawa Redblacks defensive lineman. Phil Ireland died at age 19 in a car accident Oct. 20, 1974. The brother of Williams’ mother Debra, Phil Ireland and his legacy have long been a big deal for Connor. ...

When Williams got his day with the Cup on Tuesday, he took it to schools he’d attended: St. James Catholic Elementary School and Holy Trinity High School.
“The high-school kids knew what the Cup was,” said Williams. “The elementary school was funny. One third of them knew what it was, another third were just impressed that it was a big, shiny trophy, the other third thought it was the Stanley Cup.”
The next morning, he went to the cemetery with his mom. It was Debra who told him: “Bubba, nanny and uncle Phil would be so proud.”

Ottawa has signed RB Brandon Ross and DB Jonte Green.

The 24-year-old Ross rushed for 958 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior at Maryland and had NFL looks in Minnesota and Green Bay.
The 27-year-old Green (New Mexico State) was a sixth-round draft pick (196th overall) of the Detroit Lions in 2012. He also got NFL looks from Buffalo and Arizona. He was signed by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a year ago, but was among the team’s final cuts.

With the retirement of Burris, Trevor Harris takes over as #1 in his quiet, modest manner.

With the announcement of Burris’s retirement on the heels of a Grey Cup game triumph against the Calgary Stampeders, Harris, 30, is clearly the Redblacks’ designated starter going into the 2017 season.
His message to teammates and fans on Tuesday was that the Redblacks would be “just fine. You have a hungry quarterback that wants to win multiple championships. There’s nobody more driven in this game.”
Harris also played down the idea that the Redblacks had become “his team” in the post-Burris era.
“I’m not into the whole, ‘It’s my team’ thing,” he said from Ohio, where he and wife Kalie were awaiting the overdue birth of their first child.
“It’s the Ottawa Redblacks and I just happen to be part of the team.”
Harris is entering the second and final season of the contract he signed last February with the intention that he would be the starter in 2017 after serving as Burris’ backup in 2016. Brock Jensen is the only other quarterback under contract, again for one more year, although general manager Marcel Desjardins said the club would like to bring back Danny O’Brien, who will become a free agent if he’s not re-signed by Feb. 14.
The overall goal remained developing enough quarterback depth to put the Redblacks in the best position to succeed next season, “although we know we won’t be at the same position we were at because of who we just lost,” Desjardins said.
