I am not certain Popp has gone quite as insane as people think. His downfall was not finding a decent QB to replace Anthony, but I think the team still had sufficient talent at other positions. However, obviously one of the Argos flaws is not having a decent replacement to Ricky Ray.
TORONTO ARGONAUTS FOOTBALL CLUB
GREY CUP CHAMPIONS: 1914, 1921, 1933, 1937, 1938, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1950, 1952, 1983, 1991, 1996, 1997, 2004, 2012, 2017, 2022
Just wondering if we'll get any word from management this week? Barker, Copeland etc.
Montreal cut ties with Popp, so the wheels are rolling there.
Jones addressed the media for a year end conference in Sask.
And in Toronto....
Zurkowsky brought up Barker's name, if he does become available, I wonder how long before Milanovich eventually ends up in Montreal. (Obviously a hypothetical here)
Naylor is also pretty adamant that Trestman is not a GM type, and to put it mildly I agree. Trestman has never done much scouting and the like, doesn't seem to care for it.
Sunderland's name has been coming up quite a bit as of late, and surprisingly John Murphy's hasn't.
I will switch Barker and Milanovich for Popp and Trestman any day of the week.
Good organizations, which experience substantial failure, normally examine two factors. First: Is leadership the primary cause for the failure and if so, are attractive replacement candidates available. Second:Will it be necessary for the organization to take visibly dramatic measures in order to retain, regain and renew the client base(ticket buyers).
For the Argos, it is difficult not to conclude that leadership was the primary cause for the season's failure. The coach is responsible to make the right decisions to create a winning team. The GM is responsible for providing the team with players who will enable the team to win We know, that for what ever reason, neither met those responsibilities successfully.
Some might argue that the second factor is a P.R. move. Yes it is but this team is in desperate need for dramatic and highly visible P.R. moves to excite present and future fans. Ownership has to "sell" the fans, it is irrevocably committed to creating a winning team regardless of the cost.
If there are changes, there are several intriguing candidates for both positions. For what it is worth, I'd recommend high risk/high reward choices and go with O'Shea as coach and Rossetti as GM. There are many reasons why these choices can be criticized but O'Shea is at the end of his contract and the right inducements of salary and complete control might attract him. Rossetti is obviously very young but he has an encyclopedic knowledge of football talent both here and in the states. He is ambitious and might see this as a future path to a similar job in the NFL. Besides he might well appeal to the millennial generation, often called the CFL's lost generation.
If O'Shea were to leave Winnipeg and come here, he could be reunited with Drew Willy....oh, wait, never mind.
I've thought about Rosetti as well. Not sure he's ready to be a GM, but he's definitely worth talking to. He may be now where Popp was 25 years ago. I'd also like to explore some of the young guns in the Ticats' front office. Someone mentioned Shawn Burke as a real comer, and I think they actually have a few guys like that who are being developed for roles involving greater responsibility. O'Shea is an interesting option as head coach. I would have thought he'd be reupped by now, but it appears he was smart to wait since there are two openings to at least use as leverage.

At the stage this franchise is at especially off field and after a disastrous attendance season to include being at the bottom of the entertainment pecking order, now is not the time to hire an unproven "rookie" GM and or coach.
My first choice would be Tillman, but if not then Popp provided he goes back to the exclusive duties to include recruitment with contacts in the US, plus Trestman as HC.
HC Scott Milanovich @TorontoArgos said goodbye to staff this week. Milanovich is concerned he'll be fired and wanted to thank staff in case

Speaks volumes about the guy who Ricky Ray told me is easily the best coach he's played for. Argos have lots 'o problems. He isn't one. https://t.co/8aD7ABIeyA
