    Kent Austin Ruling

Looks like he can't be on the sidelines, but will be allowed in the booth. $10K fine as well.

For his behaviour in a sideline incident with an on field official during his team’s game on Saturday, Sept. 24, Hamilton Tiger-Cats vice-president of football operations and head coach Kent Austin will be removed from the sidelines for the Tiger-Cats’ next game, this Saturday, Oct. 1. He will be allowed in the spotters’ booth but he will not have the privilege of joining his team on the field or interacting with officials on the field. Furthermore, Coach Austin is fined $10,000

This type of behavior is out of character for Austin. But as a comic in all seriousness, if he is allowed to be in the spotters booth, is he able to communicate with his coaches and players? On the bright side, it is supposed to rain all weekend, so he will be dry up in the booth.

Out of character? He's a repeat offender. He body checked Stala about a year ago.

EDIT: I see that you're joking.

    Horrible decision by the league.
The proximate cause was the brutal flag from the line judge that made the call and he should be fined and or suspended for this week.

They'll let the centre move the ball up a few inches, but not as much as Hamilton did. That's procedure, and I've seen it called before.

Regardless, a coach or player cannot strike an official under any circumstances. The league had to act.

Yes or even get in the face of the official, Austin ran up to the official and shouted in his face. Don't know what he said but it was threatening.
It will make no difference if he's in the spotters booth, he will just call the plays from up there. If the Ticats lose on Saturday some fans will say it was because Austin was not on the sidelines.

Center's do that all the time. Shouldn't make any difference for the ball placement if there was an incomplete pass as that is up to the officials. Brutal call and Kenty had a gripe for sure. As far as suspending the official for calling something in the rule book would be questionable. But hopefully they are being trained to use their common sense and discretion in making these chinzy calls. The good officials are like great ball players, there's difficult to find.

It doesn't matter if it was a bad call, you don't hit an official. If this was a player the punishment would have been much harsher. Sad that a repeat offender gets off so lightly just because he's a coach.

Yes, the complaint seems to be that the punishment is inconsistent.
A player would have been suspended. A coach should receive the same treatment.

Apparently (according to the Tatti & Marsh show on TSN 1150 Hamilton) one of the defenders was yelling out that the centre was moving the ball forward. This supposedly may have influenced the official to make the call he did. Shades of the Canada U.S. Women's soccer London Olympics match?
I'm reasonably sure that all officials have been notified as to how to call this CONSISTENTLY going forward. All eyes will be watching the centre at the line of scrimmage this weekend.

CFL absolutely dropped the ball on this one. The league HAD to come down hard on this, set a strong standard that abuse of officials will never be tolerated, zero tolerance if you will. Gotta imagine the league's refs are steamed at this. The rationalizations I've heard have been nothing short of comical:
    - "it was such a bad call" - to me that's utterly irrelevant and does not excuse any physical contact with a game official
    - "he didn't mean to!" - how do we know this? sure looks like he did on video and i can't read his mind.

Personally, I think this would have been ideal punishment for Austin.

I think they got the call right. As there has been no president set to look at the past.
And it was accidental contact. Still un-called for but not intentional.
If they completely suspend Austin from the game. If it happens again and it's intentional, then the league is automatically into 2+ game suspension.
10K fine is nothing to laugh at either.

Exactly. Maybe if this was a black coach we would have seen justice? .... oh my.
