    Oct. 21: Tiger-Cats @ REDBLACKS

A Tiger-Cats win eliminates the Argonauts from the playoffs.

How pathetic. I can't believe we are talking about a team with a 5-11 record having a chance at the playoffs.

An Argo loss also eliminates the Argonauts. Argos have to win in (2-0) and the Ticats have to lose out (0-3).

Ottawa almost beat 14-1-1 Edmonton in the '81 Grey cup with a 5-11 record. It was a great game, and IMO nothing to apologize for.

I'll bet on Ottawa to win this game handily; unless bad-Hank shows up and gives the game away to the Ticats D ?

Ottawa wins and they get first in the East - with 2 nothing games against the Bummers and then a bye to the East final: good or bad for a football team to be going that stretch with no games of any meaning? I guess you could rest some key players and work on lots of wrinkles or schemes that might help in the final ?

This example comes up a lot, and it drives me nuts.
Another example of why there should be no divisions in the 9 team CFL.
The Rough Riders would not have made the playoffs if the top 6 teams were taken. Hell, the Rough Riders would have finished sixth in the 5 team west division.

Is it impressive that they won the eastern final and almost won the Grey Cup? Absolutely.
But I see no point in eliminating any teams if there is that one ridiculously small chance that a crappy team could pull it together for a couple of games at the right time.

I will rue the day when I see an Eastern Division Champion banner hanging in a stadium in Western Canada. I don't like the thought of a team (East or West) representing a division they are not in. Never will I support the Crossover in the CFL.

That Ottawa team in the final 4 games of 1981 was completely different from the team in the first 12 games. They deserved to be there and gave a juggernaut team led by Warren Moon all they could handle. Bad penalty calls against Ottawa late in the game gave Edmonton a championship. IIRC in the reg season they almost beat Edmonton in Edmonton in the fall.

Ottawa was 4-6 at one point during that 1981 season before losing four of their final five regular season games. One of those losses was a 24-6 loss in Edmonton against the 14-1-1 Esks which was a respectable result. Conversely, the Alouettes lose 62-11 and the Argos lost 61-7 in Edmonton late in that 1981 season.
Chad Kelly + Dan Adeboboye + David Ungerer + Damonte Coxie + DaVaris Daniels + Dejon Brissett = Unstoppable Force

That 61-7 loss has been in the back of my mind as the Argos prepare to play the Stampeders tomorrow night.

Thanks Ravi. I thought they finished stronger once they got JC Watts. I guess not. But they sure put it together for the ultimate David and Goliath showdown. I like the current crossover format. If a crossover team can win 2 games travelling cross country twice than they deserve to be in the GC.
    GO ARGOS!!!

I can still hear John Badham's radio call from that 61-7 game.

"I don't believe it, picked off!"

And much to my surprise, he's still around, and just got honoured.

I played golf with the late Bill Stephenson son this summer. Bill was the voice of CFRB.

He was endowed with “golden tonsils” and a “silky baritone,” among other bouquets conferred by respectful colleagues.

Many great broadcasters and personalities covered the CFL in that era 75-85 with both CTV and CBC doing games.

Loved John Badham. Also a great sports anchor late night on CBLT. Couldn't stand Pat Marsden or Bill Stephenson.

Don Wittman and Ron Lancaster are probably the best PBP/Colour Commentator duo in CFL history IMO.
